Mules and donkeys have a finely honed sense of self preservation: they won't do anything they feel will threaten their safety. That's what makes them good mounts but that's what also gives them an undeserved reputation for being stubborn. Horses can be coerced into doing something unsafe but a mule won't give in to a human's bad judgement.
Nice trail ride, thanks for taking us along.

I'd have to lash my one dog to the back of the saddle because she has the impulse control of a toddler in a candy shop. And believe me, I've been working on her for 8 years. It's been a struggle. My other dog I think she'd be fine. She's got good recall. The only command that she has never really gotten down was stay but she does stick right with me.

I once knew an old timer that used to go to the auctions in Baton Rouge, LA during the 40's, and he always grabbed the white mule if he could. They had to be ridden back to the farmers in St. Amant, LA, and that meant riding through the night at a time when there were no streetlights. He got the white mules so he would stand out at night, so no one would hit him! That's a fine white mule you have there.

@@348Tobico hi! When I was 16-17 years old I had the great privilege of riding a neighbor’s horse that wasn’t getting enough exercise. They basically saddled her up, handed me the reins and said “there you go.” I had exactly NO experience with horses… she taught me well! She loved to race cars in the field next to a road, and she raced airplanes taking off from the little airport on the other side of the field. We swam in our local creek and I learned why you put the stirrups up on the saddle horn when swimming on horseback in shorts! My inner thighs took a long time to heal from the chafing! We rode through orchards and down the country roads. That horse and I had many adventures and now I look back at the things I asked her to do I just cringe. We went on a couple of overnight trail rides with her owners and some other folks and it was the highlight of my adolescent days. So I love watching the clever cowgirl and riding vicariously by her side. I’m learning so much horsemanship from watching her.

Charles was a champ, what a calm sturdy trail mule! I rode over a similar bridge up in the North Cascades on a 4 day pack trip many decades ago, I remember how apprehensive I was with the low railing and the movement of the bridge. Most of the trail was sketchy and one of the pack horses fell off the trail and was thankfully wedged against a tree about 25 feet down, which kept him from falling to certain death. He had spooked at a bear that popped up on the opposite side of the trail and caused a rodeo. We got to the camp site in the pitch dark because it took so long to get the pack horse unloaded, back on his feet, pulling/pushing him back up to the trail and then reloading him. Miraculously he was still sound. My mare was a dream ride the whole trip, we even led in the worst sections even though both of us were the youngest. What memories.

Charles is so much like the only mule I ever knew very well. When I married into a North Georgia mountain family, I was introduced toa 30-year-old huge white mule named Ed, retired from the farmwork and king of the barn. He was gentle and kind but devoted to Grandpa Duke and had no plans to change anything about his life at that late stage of his life. What a character!

I had the most wonderful place to ride. I joined a local trail ride association so I could board my horse at their barn. The association owned quite a large property on the eastern slopes of Mt Diablo. They had a beautiful club house, riding arena and 10 stall barn. I was less than a year away from a major move from Illinois to California when I lucked into the most wonderful horse, a 4 year old registered Thoroughbred stallion I acquired for only $350 from the owner, a retired jockey who desperately needed the money. This was 1964. Mt. Diablo’s eastern side was practically uninhabited then and I could ride miles of rugged mountain trails. The first ride I took on the mountain scared both my horse and me because the trails were so narrow and steep. Neither of us had ever seen anything but entirely flat land! My naive horse never put a foot wrong. He took good care of me. I like to say I fell in love with California from the back of my horse. And of course I fell in love with my horse too! My only handicap was that he was a stallion and I chose to avoid riding with anyone who rode a mare, but my horse was a real gentleman and if you could have a love affair with a horse, I surely did. I miss him to this day.

Mules are excellent trail animals. Mules however generally require britchen because of the way their shoulders work. Mule shoulders are like donkey shoulders where they go up and down rather than back and forth. Saddles on horses tend to slip backwards which is why you have a breastplate but saddles on tend to slip forward which is why you need to have britchen.

I so needed this tonight! My family used to visit the Circle 8 (Dude) Ranch outside Chateau, MT. I was 5 years old on our 1st trip (we live in Louisville KY). I immediately fell in LOVE with 'Beauty', a small mare who was used to little dudes who had never been on a horse before. We returned to the Circle 8 several times over the years -- and I was graduated to more challenging horses. The last time I was there was when I had two children of my own. -- Anyway, I learned today of my oldest brother's death (he was 84, so he did have a good, long and happy life), but I am feeling sad. This video took me back to many of the beautiful trail rides we took...many up in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. It was always the favorite vacation for my family. (My brother ended up being a geologist, so he loved the area for the rocks). I follow your UA-cam out of my love of Montana and my love of horses. I haven't been able to ride in many years (way too much arthritis...am now 76!), but will never forget the feeling of being on the back of a horse and feeling so connected to another living being. Thank you so much for being a UA-camr! Even tho my first major crush was on the son of the owner of Circle 8 (who ended up joining the Navy!), I really belong here in Kentucky (at least we love horses here too...altho I prefer Western style). Best wishes to you. Happy Trails!! (I also had a slight crush on Roy Rogers). ;-)

That trail ride looked really fun. Thanks for bringing us along. The autumn is a nice time to get out in the countryside. Charles was a very fine steed. In olden Biblical days a king of peace would enter a city on a white donkey.
Motherly advice: stock up on lots of mini gloves and hide them in all your pockets, and/or cut a short thumbhole in the seam of the sleeves of all your sweaters.

You are brave! I've loved horses all of my life and when I was around 10, I was able to go to Girl Scout camp and it was only because I loved horses and when I got there, I drew the only mule. His name was molasses and I remember being so disappointed because I so badly wanted to ride a horse. Molasses proved to be a steady mount and by the end of camp I was in love with him. That trail had a few hair raising moments I thought but I'm 68 and haven't ridden for years. It was fun tagging along, so thanks much!

Once you get away from all the signs of modern day civilization it’s probable to imagine what it must have been like during past centuries. Via your video I really got the feel of what it must have been like to depend on your four legged friends for easier travel. Thank you for sharing.

❤WOW CHARLES - SO COOL! What a great trail ride from starting out with sun, blue skies and just a bit crisp. Then, by magic, a winter wonderland.....beautiful! Now then, the DARK TUNNEL.....Charles looks a little FREAKED.....His head came up, boy his ears are twitching all over the place, but he was a good boy & made it thru. Yes, re-hab a mule...I love mules...If you gain their trust, they are extremely sweet, loving & loyal!❤. Thanks for the trail ride! God bless...😊❤😮❤😅❤😊

It was awesome to see Charlie's the Mule. I follow a guy and his mule, 3 Mules if you're interested, who walk the west freely. The bridge was really beautiful and I'd love to walk across it! ❤

The two dogs were so much fun to watch. Their endless energy! I was having a down kind of day today but watching and listening you narrate your adventure is just what I needed. I loved your comments about Chuck! He's a pretty chill character I've forgotten my gloves on occasion too. I feel for you! lol

As I lay in my bed trying to recover from COVID, this is exactly what I needed. I have not been outside for days so thank you for taking me on this gorgeous ride. I loved watching the dogs having a blast. My poor baby has been stuck inside with me. I am going to owe her a big outing when I get out of bed again.
