Mules and donkeys have a finely honed sense of self preservation: they won't do anything they feel will threaten their safety. That's what makes them good mounts but that's what also gives them an undeserved reputation for being stubborn. Horses can be coerced into doing something unsafe but a mule won't give in to a human's bad judgement. Nice trail ride, thanks for taking us along.
I'd have to lash my one dog to the back of the saddle because she has the impulse control of a toddler in a candy shop. And believe me, I've been working on her for 8 years. It's been a struggle. My other dog I think she'd be fine. She's got good recall. The only command that she has never really gotten down was stay but she does stick right with me.
It makes me so happy to see well behaved dogs in public! The last trail I went on a lady’s doodle was barking and going crazy and she did nothing besides scream and say “he’s friendly” as he growled at us and barked.
I once knew an old timer that used to go to the auctions in Baton Rouge, LA during the 40's, and he always grabbed the white mule if he could. They had to be ridden back to the farmers in St. Amant, LA, and that meant riding through the night at a time when there were no streetlights. He got the white mules so he would stand out at night, so no one would hit him! That's a fine white mule you have there.

@@348Tobico hi! When I was 16-17 years old I had the great privilege of riding a neighbor’s horse that wasn’t getting enough exercise. They basically saddled her up, handed me the reins and said “there you go.” I had exactly NO experience with horses… she taught me well! She loved to race cars in the field next to a road, and she raced airplanes taking off from the little airport on the other side of the field. We swam in our local creek and I learned why you put the stirrups up on the saddle horn when swimming on horseback in shorts! My inner thighs took a long time to heal from the chafing! We rode through orchards and down the country roads. That horse and I had many adventures and now I look back at the things I asked her to do I just cringe. OMG! The bridge terrified me just watching. I would have walked on the trail before riding a horse on that bridge! Wonderful, soulful Charles knew exactly what he was doing. Thank you for sharing your trail ride with us. It was so much fun!
Charles was a champ, what a calm sturdy trail mule! I rode over a similar bridge up in the North Cascades on a 4 day pack trip many decades ago, I remember how apprehensive I was with the low railing and the movement of the bridge. Most of the trail was sketchy and one of the pack horses fell off the trail and was thankfully wedged against a tree about 25 feet down, which kept him from falling to certain death. He had spooked at a bear that popped up on the opposite side of the trail and caused a rodeo. We got to the camp site in the pitch dark because it took so long to get the pack horse unloaded, back on his feet, pulling/pushing him back up to the trail and then reloading him. Miraculously he was still sound. My mare was a dream ride the whole trip, we even led in the worst sections even though both of us were the youngest. What memories.
Charles is so much like the only mule I ever knew very well. When I married into a North Georgia mountain family, I was introduced toa 30-year-old huge white mule named Ed, retired from the farmwork and king of the barn. He was gentle and kind but devoted to Grandpa Duke and had no plans to change anything about his life at that late stage of his life. What a character!
I can’t believe how wonderful it is to go for a ride with you! I’m 86 and long past my riding days because of back issues and it revives all sorts of wonderful memories to go riding vicarously. You are brave! I've loved horses all of my life and when I was around 10, I was able to go to Girl Scout camp and it was only because I loved horses and when I got there, I drew the only mule. His name was molasses and I remember being so disappointed because I so badly wanted to ride a horse. Molasses proved to be a steady mount and by the end of camp I was in love with him. That trail had a few hair raising moments I thought but I'm 68 and haven't ridden for years. It was fun tagging along, so thanks much!

What beautiful scenery and trail! Thank you for sharing with us!❤
Thanks for taking us along on that beautiful trail ride.
That bridge is a nope from me too, lol.
Lady from Rhode Island is on this to begin.yah🐴
You are brave! I've loved horses all of my life and when I was around 10, I was able to go to Girl Scout camp and it was only because I loved horses and when I got there, I drew the only mule. His name was molasses and I remember being so disappointed because I so badly wanted to ride a horse. Molasses proved to be a steady mount and by the end of camp I was in love with him. That trail had a few hair raising moments I thought but I'm 68 and haven't ridden for years. It was fun tagging along, so thanks much!
Of course CC, being the saddle junkie that she is, just happened to have an extra two in her truck! 😂😂😂😂😂 I laughed out loud at that one!
What a gentleman Charles was. Thank you for sharing that spectacular ride.❤
Once you get away from all the signs of modern day civilization it’s probable to imagine what it must have been like during past centuries. Via your video I really got the feel of what it must have been like to depend on your four legged friends for easier travel. Thank you for sharing.
Your seriously safe on a mule ❤
Love this ride ! It is really nice scenery!
Riding with you and Charles was the highlight of my day, thank you CC. ❤😊
Great video! Loved the scenery, the trails, tunnels and bridge (?). Don’t blame you for not going over. Next time extract sweater, gloves and a headlamp! 😁 ❤
Love mules. So smart and sensible.
❤WOW CHARLES - SO COOL! What a great trail ride from starting out with sun, blue skies and just a bit crisp. Then, by magic, a winter wonderland.....beautiful! Now then, the DARK TUNNEL.....Charles looks a little FREAKED.....His head came up, boy his ears are twitching all over the place, but he was a good boy & made it thru. Yes, re-hab a mule...I love mules...If you gain their trust, they are extremely sweet, loving & loyal!❤. Thanks for the trail ride! God bless...😊❤😮❤😅❤😊
Beautiful trails 😊
It was awesome to see Charlie's the Mule. I follow a guy and his mule, 3 Mules if you're interested, who walk the west freely. The bridge was really beautiful and I'd love to walk across it! ❤
The two dogs were so much fun to watch. Their endless energy! I was having a down kind of day today but watching and listening you narrate your adventure is just what I needed. I loved your comments about Chuck! He's a pretty chill character I've forgotten my gloves on occasion too. I feel for you! lol
I enjoyed your ride. I loved the video.
Well that was fun! If not a little chilly. Thanks for taking us along! 💞

As I lay in my bed trying to recover from COVID, this is exactly what I needed. I have not been outside for days so thank you for taking me on this gorgeous ride. I loved watching the dogs having a blast. My poor baby has been stuck inside with me. I am going to owe her a big outing when I get out of bed again.
WA state here but raised in Indiana❤ love these rides
Looks like a great day! nice to see you out riding!
Really awesome video. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Thanks for the ride! Beautiful. I seldom go to the mountains since I stopped skiing, this reminds me of those times. Those dogs are amazing, I’m tired just watching them.
I love his ears so much lol. Always moving, always analyzing the situation. Charles is a good guy, and very handsome.
I love Charles’ ears!
