There are two types of people: those that know Barry is the GOAT, and those who are wrong. Pushing the line is all well and good, but the name of the game is to score, and Barry did tons of that! His game would translate to modern day football so well, he’d be unstoppable!

Barry still holds the all time single season college record in 80's 2,628 and 37 TDs in 11 games!

Nobody could change direction like Barry. No body had the vision and instincts like Barry. And his legs were so so strong, that's why he could change direction and accelerate like no one else. Crazy. He was plenty fast, but couldn't outrun everybody, but could out accelerate anyone. Look up the top 20 runners all time yardage, only Barry & Jim Brown are 5+ per carry, everyone else is 4-4.5 per carry.

People tend to underestimate Barry's straight line speed - primarily because his agility, balance, and lateral movement were so incredible. The thing is, Barry was a legit elite sprinter - 4.33 forty and 10.3 100 meter dash.
And forget about him being 5'9". I believe the Lions listed his height as 5'8". However, I met him at a function at which he was speaking. I attended with my father, who was just under 5'8". Barry was slightly shorter - not by much, but noticably so when they stood face to face.
I watched Barry play against Nebraska in 1988. The guy had 360 yards on over thirty carries, as well as six touchdowns - all against a pretty good defense. Nebraska won the game by about 20 points.
At the end of the game, 80,000 Nebraska fans stood as one and saluted his performance with a standing ovation. It was the most remarkable feat of sustained athleticism I have ever witnessed. Unbelievable.
Barry's father called him the third best running back of all time - after Jim Brown and Walter Payton. I agree with that assessment.

    He was said to have
Ball-Bearings fit ankles. He was ALWAYS quicker than fast. He led the league EVERY year in carries for a loss, but was inevitably at the top of the yardage list every season. He was at full speed in 3 steps, literally. He was a UNICORN!

One of my favorite Barry stories was when he was at Oklahoma State and Thurman Thomas was an older, more mature back who started ahead of him. One of the opponents told his guys to be careful and not injure Thomas because he didn't want OK State to put Barry in. Imagine being more afraid of a young guy at RB2 than you are of a heisman RB in the game.

Highlight #20 Barry didn't run out of gas...a linebacker had snagged one of his cleats while trying to tackle him...thus he was running 1 shoe on and barefoot.

There are only two RBs in the top 10 career rushing yards list to average 5.0 per carry. Jim Brown and Barry Sanders. Couple that with the fact that Barry has the most negative yards in NFL history and it is without question that Barry did more pure rushing than any RB in history. This is what 🐐’s are made of

Nah, on play #21, the defender had the angle on Barry. That's why he couldn't take it all the way. If dude didn't have that angle, Barry would've had an easy 99-100 yard TD run. He outran everybody else.

Barry is the Goat because he played on some bad teams. He’s a freak based on his size, speed, explosiveness, IQ he’s top three all time. Imagine if he had the offensive line Emmitt had and milked his career like Emmitt did? No comparison. In my mind. Thanks for mixing it up!

I have to respectfully disagree with your comments about some of the runs where he takes it to the house being early in his career. One of the reasons Lions fans were so upset when he retired was because he hadn't lost a step yet.
Barry had a very good 40 time at the combine of 4.39. Excellent time but there have running backs with faster times. He was not a sprinter (track) guy like OJ or Dickerson to name a couple, but what nobody who's ever played the game could match was 0-20 speed! His stop and start has never been matched!
    Great reaction gentlemen!

The counter trap was absolutely a designed play in Wayne Fontes' system. He knew Barry had that tremendous cutback ability and burst and he also knew teams would overpursue. Lomas Brown was their left tackle responsible for sealing off the outside lineman on those runs.

  • @tomdodds8091
    @tomdodds8091 10 днів тому

He didn't have the fastest top end, which is why you'd see some DB's run him down eventually, but his initial burst of speed was superhuman. He'd take off like everyone else was standing still and then they all would have to play catch up.

Dave Megget was convicted for burglary and criminal sexual assault. I wish Barry played longer, I feel that this limits him from being the GOAT. Def my top 3 with Jim Brown and Sweetness, Walter Payton. You also have to take into consideration the era that these guys played in. RB were just used differently years ago. The game was different too. All I could think of when you said I love big backs was: I love big butts and I cannot lie 😂. Don’t forget about the D too. Some LT highlights would be fun.

The biggest reason I will always put Barry over Emmitt is what he had around him. Emmitt had probably the best OLine ever. Barry had trash. Was the entire offense. Pretty much every play here was against a run defense. He played his whole career facing 8 in the box and STILL cooked. As a lifetime Bears fan I still have Walter Payton as #2. It blows my mind to think that somebody can be so good that they could do that for a whole career when practically every play he lined up and looked at 4 Linemen, 3 Linebackers and a safety all keyed on him.

I’ve got Barry around #Five like you Che I preferred bigger backs, my favorite was Eric Dickerson! The combination of speed, power , balance and that upright running style helped make him magic to watch, next I go with “ Bo” I think of the numbers he could’ve had if not for that catastrophic hip injury! Barry isn't even in the top ten as far as open field speed, but NOBODY has ever been shiftier, moved better laterally, or had vision like his. And never once spiked the football, he just gave the ball back to the ref. He spiked it once in pee wee football and his dad told him, act like you've been there before, and he never did again. The man is a class act and was wasted in Detroit.

Barry ran a 4.37 40 . That means there are only a handful of guys in the league that are faster and his acceleration is unparalled.
Living in Detroit I had the hinor of watching every game /run of Barrys and he surely quit football because the Lions sucked. He just made up with the organization and got a statue recently so Barry is not going to rip the organization even though he should have long ago , he never did.
After he retired the Dolphins offered 3 first round picks to the Lions for Barry and the Lions declined and responded by saying that Barry would play as a Lion or not at all in typical Lion fashion.

You’re confusing best with favorite which are two discernibly different things. One is based solely on preference and one is based on myriad of criteria some of which is objective and some of which is subjective. People do this in hip hop constantly. They often tout their “favorites” for who they think is the best. Same thing here. You prefer big backs with a certain style and those are your favorite backs. But nobody you named is better than Barry in 99% of both subjective and objective criteria or consensus.
