Thank you for making this video, you never know how important your videos are to us. You are so clever with the different styles of edging. They are all beautiful. I planned to pay someone to build my pond, but I plan to do it myself now. Excited as I am, I know my pond will bring character to my patio.
Tip-course sand! Pour liberally over your varied sized gravel, and gently rinse in to both decrese weeds by filling in gaps, and cover the liner even better! Love your rock placement!!!!
damn, I've just spent the last 3 hours watching your videos.. I'm getting sad knowing that I am running out of PondDigger videos to watch. Thanks for all the great advice, you do amazing work!
Thanks Dylan for your dedication to our videos! Good News is we have a busy season planned with a lot of filming so stay tuned! We will keep em coming at you as long as we can keep you interested!
So Good. Between the capillary action tip to the demonstration of edge treatments. (i've only ever done #3), I love it. Also love how you dug the rock in the ground. Just looks so much more realistic and gives the appearance its been there a long time vs just setting it on top of the soil.
Those were excellent ways to hide the liner around the edge. I think I prefer the last method. It looks very random and natural. I also liked the boulder that was placed back about 1-2' on the right-hand side. I'm interested in having 1 bog garden next to and separate from my pond and 1 that is actually part of it (i.e. the water from the pond seeps over into the bog to keep the plants moist/wet). Either of those would also have been a cool edition to finishing the edge. This series is great!
Hey I'm glad you like it. I picked it up at my local rock yard. It is Mexican Beach Pebble and it comes in several different grades. 3" to 5", 2" to 3", 1" to 2", and 3/8" to 3/4". I typically will pick up a couple bags of each depending on the size of the pond and work in the different grades to help naturalize the edges.
Excellent advice, thanks for taking the time to show us amateur pond builder. Other pro channels aren’t very helpful actually, although they show the amazing end result. New sub! 😊
I agree more pond digger video's .I like the walk up stone ,the first one ,Gives a great spot for children .Bark you get a heavy rain what a mess.We get some really heavy rains here
Just finished watching all 21 of your videos I learned a great deal you are indeed a Master pond builder how can I connect 2 inch corrugated pipe to regular PVC pipe?
Another awesome video!! This is going to look so good but if that goat stays around after the job is finished, it will be destroyed in no time. Although the goat is cute, it's not something I would want hanging round my new pond/garden:) I'm looking forward to seeing the end result, you have all done a great job...kudos to all of you!!!
This is true. Most of my clients that use bark around the pond freshen it up every 12 to 18 months by pulling away last years bark and adding new. If in fact you left the bark, it turned to mulch and weeds began to grow in the shallow dirt, weeding would be easy because the liner would keep the weeds from getting a good hold in the earth.
WOW, that is a lot of time, work and pride put it these videos, i hope you know how much a lot of people appreciate what you do for us. your amazing! :D :D
Thanks for the feedback. We do bog filters frequently where we pump feed the bog and the plants do amazing. We will definitely be do a video clip on bog filters! Stay Tuned!
ThePondDigger, great stuff. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this pond being built. I wander if you have done any of Japanese style garden ponds? I am after some ideas in such direction as I'm in process of building one of my own.
Great series! Have any suggestions for hiding an in-ground UV light? We installed it in-line with the shut-off valves exposed (and obviously so we could get to the bulb to change it), but now we have to hide it. We're thinking of building a small deck (platform) to cover it and move as necessary. Any suggestions?
Great series. I am about to rejuvenate a pond in a house I just bought and these videos are invaluable. My main concern however is making the pond safe for the grandkids and our puppy. Do you have any advise on how to make a pond safe without detracting too much from the aesthetics? Thanks.
The steps and shelves are important for a safety precaution. consider a fence around the pond if you have small grandkids. Have an alarm on the back doors of your house so if the kids venture out back the alarm will make a beep notifying you. Just like safety measures for swimming pools.
No discount given here. Actually this pond will is set for demolition in just a couple weeks. It's a demonstration set in our back yard by the horse corrals! This pond took two months to build because we wanted to cover as many details as possible. We will be building a new set for a new series we begin in August! Stay tuned, I hope you subscribed.
Hey Lyndi that's a great question. Installing UV filters below ground can be tricky. Most of the manufacturers don't want to you install them below grade, I do know that! We have on occasion installed a UV below grade in tricky situations. It's probably not a good idea to recommend an installation not recommended by the manufacturers. I don't want to make any enemies!
In the process of building the pond some soil ended up in it. I have the pump running 24/7 for about 4 days now. Is soil ever gonna settle and have clear water or am I gonna have to remove the water and all the rocks and start all over again? Thanks, love your videos
Great videos,I really enjoy watching them .what would you recommend if there was a steep grade coming in to the side of the edge treatment so that you don't get runoff?
You did a great job ignoring the goat. How long did the plants last before the goat ate them all and did you check to make sure they were not toxic to the goat?
Could this size pond fit at least 2 koi fish and a few goldfish size fish? Keep up the great videos! Also do you have a company in England or know any good pond builder companies? Thanks!
Yes Billie Jean loves to eat plants. Maybe you don't know it but this is only a set for the filming of this How To Video. The pond and plants have been removed already and a new set is being created for a new series!
This is great stuff. Very diligent in what you do. Just a little concerned about the goat chewing all the flowers and fauna. Why is the waterfall tank so big? Secondly, are all pond pumps submersible?
These videos are wonderful! I am just in the stage of ground prepping -- getting rid of roots and such. I love seeing the various edging techniques. One question: would it be good to go ahead and use waterfall foam between the coping stones and the liner regardless of the edging technique? It seems like (in my yard situation) dirt could accidentally begin to accumulate with plant and mulch decomposition. Is it a problem to use the foam all around as "insurance" against a wicking type of leak? Thank you for all these great tutorials!
I use foam like it is going out of style! I use it around the entire edge of my coping installations! Follow me on SnapChat for daily PondPro Tips! SnapChat - theponddigger
I’m sorry if you’ve already explained this but- what kind of filter is on this pond? Just the skimmer? Does the pump move water from the skimmer into the waterfall? And biological filtration happens naturally on the rocks?
No. We do it straight away. We do leave a good amount of liner on the edges for rework if needed but if you are working on good compacted soil you shouldn't have any problems.
Does it not make it very difficult to clean the pond bottom when the pond is all rocked inside? It seems it would make a great place for particles to get trapped... I know they are not cleaned until years later it just seems it would make everything more difficult, especially if a leak ever developed. We are digging our pond now and in previous ponds we have only placed rocks on our ledges. It certainly is beautiful the way you do it.
bro plz upload some videos about different varities of fish that we can introduce along with big koe some small varities to make it more vibrant from inside ..... u r frnd from.india i am waiting for ur response . ☺
I keep coming back to this. I can't figure out the best way to do my pond's edging. I was thinking of going more informal but the shape might require a more formal edging... The pond is basically a rectangular "hole" in a concrete yard, with the waterfall coming off from a back retaining wall (sort of "spilling" through it"). There is no step inside the pond to place rocks on, it is a sheer 4 foot drop. I was thinking of overhanging some type of flagstone 2-3" over the water to hide the liner. Any tips?
Thank you so much! I think that's the best idea. I feel that if I try to make a rectangle look natural with bigger stones it will still turn out looking unnatural and just messy.
Do I need upon skimmer if my pond is going to come through I'll come through an aqua tonic system which will filter out all the gunk and biological material and come back down through the waterfall do I need a pond skimmer then
We have a large pond, 25 x 18 x 4 ft. deep. Koi pond. We live in Alberta, Canada and can get quite cold winters. We are looking for a skimmer and are wondering about an in pond drain. What do you recommend. John

At about 2:00 into the video you say the surrounding area is at least an inch and a half above water level, where the skimmer top is 2" below water level. But the surrounding area looks lower than the skimmer. Is it because of a sloped grade?
Great information, I like that last treatment minus the mulch.. awesome Eric!!
WHAT!?! So all this work is simply too shoot a series of videos to educate the public on how to build a pond, free of charge! Wow, respect man :)
I absolutely luv the last edge treatment and using the foam to prevent water wicking out of the pond - you are a genius!

After watching every part of this series I get very inspired, I'm ready to dig again, I mean so more, or still. Oh shucks, you know what I mean.
Those plants aren't gonna last too long, that goat seems to find them rather delicious. :D

The water clears up in just a day or so after the completion of the install.
