Lou was initially casted as the villain for Pumping Iron but it was not working out because of Lou's underdog background and nice guy personality, so Arnie stepped up to take the arrogant pseudo-villain role to make the movie dynamic and dramatic as the original idea intended, even if for his career being the good guy would have been a better fit. This made the audience root for Lou as the underdog good guy challenging the arrogant champion. Arnold was ready to put the success of the movie and his respect for Lou before his own acting career interests in this case, and it paid off.
