Talented sports and portrait photographer Matt Hernandez offers insightful posing techniques in this video on capturing team portraits.
Westcott Top Pro Matt Hernandez began his career as an award-winning graphic artist, then combined his love of photography with his design background and love of sports to become one of the country's premier sports photographers.
Matt captured these images with a strobe that was modified using a silver parabolic umbrella by Westcott. These large umbrellas are essential lighting tools for photographing groups, as they create a very broad and even light source that simulates the sun.

Would love to see this with a larger team (more typical) and hear about the lighting setup.
Such a great, concise set of tips - thank you!
This was great and I think a big part of that is how clearly you explained your thought process throughout. I like that you guide us through the thinking in a sort of iterative way rather than just coming in and saying "okay this is the setup. go." This is such a better way to understand your approach. Thanks for this!
This was great. Thanks for the easy tips!
Excellent! Quick and too the point. Nice work :-)

Thanks for watching
Terrific, thanks!
I'd like to hear about your lighting setup too. I know this was a posing video, and I appreciate that. A quick 10 second blurb about your camera and lighting settings would be helpful too. Thanks a lot for sharing!
Brad,

You ROCK!! what kind of stand are you using? I need to find one.
Great
Awesome tips
Glad you like them!
Great tips Matt, is there a video on the flash setup, could you share where the flashes were located ? Thanks
Yeah the posing was nice but definitely being a Westcott video I think there’d be a little more discussion about the actual lighting because I see their edge lit probably by natural light because I couldn’t see any flashes off to the far sides
That hot spot on the center subject though...
When doing a large team how do you know who is who when doing say 40 cheerleaders ? Do you have them hold up a piece of paper with a number on it or is there an easier way ?
Hey Matt in this shot you have a 3 light set up if I see correctly with the one light directly in front of the group. The gal in the center of the image is a bit farther back in the posing arrangement, does she have a little less light on here and just something you have to deal with in post or how do you light them so evenly not having the same distance from the light source. I have tried to move the light farther back and even with a 600 ws light don't seem to get this even spread of light with the same modifier 7' umbrella. Also it looks like you're shooting somewhat closed down f/16 or so is that true and if so do you have to bump your ISO up a bit in this scenario. Thanks
good
What light stand are you using?
What are you doing to get that dark background?
what fStop did you shoot at?
Sorry because i know its an old post
but about the posing, i dont like no 7 legs (2nd girl from right)
the left leg looks broken
Where your lighting at? Is one flash or two?
I'm planning on doing something like this with my local High School, I see that an umbrella with a diffuser was used for this video, what size of an umbrella can I use?
