@@danielmarone5757 ---- Neil worshipped (maybe not worshipped) but was influenced highly by Buddy Rich and by Gene Cruppa.
In a technical drumming style, Neil perhaps surpassed his mentors.
Drumming is an objective instrument and how it is played, genre, style, type of kit or set, trap, or percussion, technical, or freeflow, there are masters of all drums. Different eras of popular music bring different masters. Each of which will name different influences in their style, some may overlap and others will surprise you by who they say they think is the best.

Here's what Buddy said about practicing: : I don’t believe in too much practice: your playing can grow stale. Over-practice often results in unnatural (mechanical) drumming. What you should do is to play every chance you get. If you are not on a steady job (six nights a week), then rehearse with units as often as possible. But, by all means, play!

We both started out on piano wh2n my parents wanted us to play. I took to it immediately, my sister loved piano and practised and practised incessantly and I practiced as well but I advanced much faster than her much to her chagrin and I was moved to a more advanced teacher . I took up drums after as that seemed more my passion at times, and had several friends that also drummed and played but couldn't quite get the natural rhythm and nuances and I did . I'm not tooting myself and trying to either but it has come very easy to me in what I hear . I've played in enough bands to see it in others as well . But obv just my feelings. You need to be told about drumming and then PRACTICE in order to be skilled in that art. I'm sure there was a certain point when he just became a master at it and didn't need to train or think about what he was doing because he ate drumming up for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But there was a good stretch of practice that had to take place in order to be that good.

Good on you both for highlighting one of the two greatest drummers. Yes buddy and Gene Krupa are the fathers of drum solos. The ones that are the icons to the later generations. Ginger Baker who became the of spring of the two greats. As all three, there background is jazz. As jazz is the pinnacle of music, of course classical include. Give ginger Baker a try, his song "Toad" or his airforce album. Great reaction and analysis for being so young. But age has nothing to do with music. Its how it makes you feel that matters. Try a song by Jefferson Airplane "Summer Of Love" it was the year 1967. The song gives meaning to how music changes the world/ people. Again, Well done to you both.

So glad to see you two reacting to this incredible performance!! Buddy is widely considered the best drummer to have ever lived to this day, been playing since he was 18 MONTHS old!! Rarely practiced at all but played ALL THE TIME! When you play all the time you only get better, and he was better. I hate to inform you though, he was not flipping any sticks during this performance, it is most likely an optical illusion for you because he's playing so fast it just looks like he was flipping sticks, but he didn't...he wasn't really into a lot of flashy stuff like that, he just played. I recorded this solo off of PBS onto a VHS tape (ask your dad about those) and I watched this SOOOOO many time I ended up breaking the tape. I also stole his ending for my own solos I did when I was in a band years ago, just too good and fun for an ending so I HAD to use it! He didn't need to read music, he had a natural ear for music...also, drum music is different than sheet music for other instruments. This performance was in the early 80s.
I posted this link on the Neil Peart video, this drummer is Aquiles Priester and he is absolutely incredible. I think you two would REALLY like this one, it's nothing but him playing the drums in the video, he's playing along to a song that he played drums on the recording. ua-cam.com/video/kXGc2AR1a-c/v-deo.html

His daughter was with him that night, and she said that he was probably having a heart attack towards the end of the song. Buddy Rich said that never practices for the songs. He only resherses with the band a few times before the performance.

Definitivamente, el mejor baterista de todos los tiempos. Un verdadero genio, capaz de liderar una banda completa de jazz con su batería.

You should react to a Joey Jordison drum solo, Buddy Rich is one of his influences and I think it shows.

whoa! You girls reacting to my man Buddy Rich..lol...I've been a fan for years. I know a lot about him. He was around 64 years old during this performance in 1982 and in very bad health , but he still plows through and delivers. The most amazing thing about Buddy was everything on drums, but specifically his left hand that was superhuman. The great Neil Peart idolized Buddy and called him the best ever. You are correct that he did not read music. He never wanted to because he always wanted to have a spontaneous performance. He would listen to a number once or twice and had the ability to remember all the parts, breaks, transitions ect ect. And his style of big band swing jazz was an advanced style of drumming because of how it is interactive it is with the brass, piano ect ect.. One thing about this performance is that it is a clip from a larger piece of music called "West Side Story Suite"..Buddy always did a solo , and that is where this clip starts. You are missing the first part... Here is great video quality of the entire piece.. ua-cam.com/video/EeyyGmd5dvM/v-deo.html

I get that he was the drummer's drummer, a man who inspired the drummers of our favourite groups/bands but when I was 13 or so I remember bring so mesmerised by the sounds of a drum solo that had melody to it's rhythm and built up the rhythms by addition so that because I rewound the tape and listened over and over and over I can 'play' it in my head note perfect or 'play' it with vocals - well mouth sounds anyway, lol
I know you will love it. It's in the song by Iron Butterfly and it is called "In- a- Gadda- da- Vida"
    ENJOY 😳😄🤗🥰

Not sure you heard this, but he had mild heart attack performing this solo, you can see his face in middle he’s not OK, and was in hospital after the show. That shows how much commitment he has, for what he was doing.

one of the things i love about watching videos of drummers like Buddy Rich, Neil Pert or Dan Carey is how you can hear what they are actually hitting, but the camera is too slow to pick up a lot of it. the sticks jump from place to place on screen, maybe that's what you were seeing when you said he was flipping his sticks.

As you're now moving into different genres of music you might like to try listening to Sandy Nelson. He was a drummer from the late 50's and early 60's. He's not in the same league as Buddy Rich but you will find his tunes are very catchy. Try 'Drums are my Beat', 'Let there be Drums' or 'Teen Beat.' 😀👍( This is just a suggestion to listen to these tunes. You won't find much film to react to).
