Buddy is the greatest of all time because he could do things that simply couldn't be done by any other drummer, regardless of the greatness of that drummer. He was a child prodigy who took his God-given talents to the highest level imaginable. Buddy Rich was great, as was his "arch-rival" Gene Krupa. However, the best drummer, perhaps ever, was Neil Peart of the Prog Metal trio band RUSH. The instrumental song "YYZ" will blow your mind. All three members of the group are master musicians, Alex Lifeson (Guitar), Geddy Lee (Vocals/Bass/Synthisizer/Keyboards) formed the band in 1969, and after the first album the original d rummer left due to health issues, and Neil Peart took over on the drum kit. Neil was known as "The Professor" and soon after he not only was the Master of the Drumkit , he was writing the songs. RUSH is a very, ver deep rabbit hole, and it is some of the most amazing music I have ever heard in my almost 50 years on this mudball rotating around the sun. RUSH's magnum opus "2112" is a seven part, 21 minute song, and you'll be amazed by it. Please, check out RUSH soon ... you are missing out

  • @tonymiddleditch701

It is not possible to play the drums to this level without using the traditional grip,it enables a balance of left/right co-ordination and ease of movement around the drums and cymbals that the match grip rarely achieves. The traditional grip has a magic that is hard to put into words, buddy rich is in complete control of every aspect of what he is doing with the sticks. Older drummers who play traditional grip can out play younger drummers simply because the technique flows better and does not rely so much on physical strength. Watch many older drummers using traditional grip, there is not much body movement, it’s all about the grip and wrist/finger strength. It’s harder to master when learning but although no longer fashionable, worth the effort.

You like drums, you also said you like the swing era. Try Woody Herman's Sing Sing Sing.
You have heard it in movies and other places. The song is from so long ago, it was recorded onto a 78RPM two-sided record, half the song on each side. The drummer on that if you can find the video of them playing, is using a very SMALL drum kit you would get a kid who is just staring out.

Very rich was born in 1917, this was played when he was 57 years old. He played for over 60 years. You cannot hear him, but watch his mouth, he’s growling. He always grilled when he played. Most of the time you can’t hear it but every so often some pieces you can hear him growing in the background…. He never learn to read music. He was born playing the drums.
You need to listen to the whole thing without interruption to get the full affect. With intermissions, your adrenaline stops and starts. If you listen to it complete from start to finish you’re just as tired as he is.

Honest to God, I may not have ever laughed as loud as I just did when Junior asks about nunchucks. Having thought about it I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. It breaks my heart that they had to rush him to the hospital right after this performance, but he survived

The really ironic part is, Buddy was a legit black belt.

You started at the very top! Yes, there are so many amazing drummers today, standing on the shoulders of Buddy and Gene Krupa, Art Blakey. The drum set is fairly new, compared to other instruments and it's an American instrument, not drums but the drumset.

Buddy had a heart attack and his daughter got him to hospital...he was also a US Marine during WWII....he was a Judo instructor for 1st Marines....he had a bad temper because he expected perfection from every performance...he loved his fans! Neil P from RUSH loved Buddy and took over as lead drummer after his passing....kept the band on tour

4:44 To your question about Buddy using nunchucks. Buddy trained in martial arts and became an honorary black belt. Edit: He wasn’t a honorary but an official black belt.
