The restriction is pretty much just a reflash. You can do exhaust if you want, but the ECU tune is the only difference. It’s also worth comparing insurance on the ZX4 vs. the ZX6.
The 40th anniversary edition of the zx4rr is what made me finally book my direct access course. (mod 1 end of the month and mod 2 next month). The typical sound that most new middleweight bikes generate even with aftermarket exhausts just sound so boring to me and simply didn't get me excited enough to want to even try them. Until now. Anything else that scratches that 16k rpm itch either has too much power for the road, too uncomfortable to daily, is too old, or too expensive to insure. Seeing one at a dealer only made me fall in love more as I found the riding position surprisingly comfortable. Some of the complaints for this bike have been the soft suspension but I have a feeling it'll be perfect for our typical B-roads with their various states of disrepair. I'm 36, used to ride years ago on a learner licence but have never been able to justify/afford the high cost of entry for getting a bigger bike. So I had made a choice to switch to 4 wheels to feed my track-day needs, namely a clio 172 which doubles as a daily. Question is. If you're a beginner, you really should have purchased a Ninja 500. It's cheaper, has more low down torque, more useable around town. Going on £9,000 for an all or nothing 400cc isn't good value.
@@captricharddee3634 I think it really depends on the budget. Bought mine last year of April as my beginner bike and a daily. No problem both going downtown and highways 0 issues at all. Most people think it's really impractical to get the ZX4 since it's really expensive compared to other 650's or 400 but if he has the money and doesn't mind paying that much I don't really see the problem at all.
I love that Kawasaki made this, but what I really want is a 300-500cc triple motorcycle under 400lbs from whoever will make it. I want that flat torque line and smoothness
Peak power and torque on the ZX-4 is not a matter of displacement, but the fact the engine is a supersquare one, and the bike is heavilly limited because of enviromental standards. Most tunners are getting +20 to 30HP extra on the dyno.
Ninja 500, Aprilia RS457, CF Moto 450SS, KTM RC390 all have a great deal more torque shove than this. The Ninja 500 weighing a whopping 60 pounds less, $4000 less costly too.
Well ill have 2 different ends of the Grab bikes to choose from. For Torque and blasting back roads it will be the awesome KLR650. For screaming on the same back roads. The Zx400 rr. I wont have to clean the KLR... Hmm?
Something I don't understand is why almost no reviewers ever talk about engine vibration. Especially on something like this where you're going to be high in the Rev range all the time and almost certainly going to be on the street most of the time how much the engine vibrates is probably the most important characteristic for a lot of people including myself. It's all well and good to have a bike that sounds good and handles well but if you can only ride it for 15 minutes without getting pins and needles and a headache it's not exactly a fun time.
I daily mine, and will say- the lack of torque is something to get used to from stoplight to stoplight. On the interstate and mountains- the bike is great.
@midlife-crysis exactly like where this video was made. They are reviewing it at 54hp they are the only place that gets it with that little power. They should let everyone know it's like 24 extra hp everywhere else in the world.

The ZX-4R has no real competitors. I'm sure less than 1% of all people looking to buy a ZX-4R are considering buying any of the other bikes mentioned in this video instead.
They should have gone all out with a lighter frame and a sub 400lbs wet weight. At 415lbs wet this bike is unappealing. Plus an RR should come stock with fully adjustable suspension.
60 lb heavier and $4000 more expensive than the Ninja 500? No thanks. Hard to be charmed about it. So you want the full 72 wheel horsepower it makes instead of 56 HP? pay another $1500 for exhaust and ECU flash.

I live in California and got to test ride one. I loved it more than my ninja 400. But I think ima go with a zx6r for my next bike
I mentioned above that I'm looking for a second bike coming from a dual sport. Thoughts?
2001 zx7r with adjustable suspension or new zx4rr for the track ?? thoughts?
I order ZX4R 40th anniversary edition as per your suggestion
Hopefully will be the best bike for beginners like me 😊
If you're a beginner, you really should have purchased a Ninja 500.
@@strumfury3210 Where are you located? I'm in the U.S. I'm still unclear about the hp.
not a beginner bike at all
Should be fun watching the young lads racing them at bsb in the super teens
Already bought a 40th aniversary. picking it up some time this month. so maybe i should sell my old ZXR400 :-D
Bar height. Could you not just lower the clip ons down the fork stanchions? Making sure the bars etc clear the tank/fairing on full lock.
Nice vid & bike but you missed the Suzuki GSX8R. Wouldn't say it"s a front runner in the category but it's definitely comparable.
Yeh! Another upload…🫡👈🆗✅
getting this bike for my first one
I love that Kawasaki made this, but what I really want is a 300-500cc triple motorcycle under 400lbs from whoever will make it. I want that flat torque line and smoothness
Peak power and torque on the ZX-4 is not a matter of displacement, but the fact the engine is a supersquare one, and the bike is heavilly limited because of enviromental standards. Most tunners are getting +20 to 30HP extra on the dyno.
189kg seems very heavy! I am comparing it to the BMW S1000rr M package which is only 4kg more! Is this 4rr good for beginners??
I have a zxr-400 and i cant wait to ride this one also
Ninja 500, Aprilia RS457, CF Moto 450SS, KTM RC390 all have a great deal more torque shove than this. The Ninja 500 weighing a whopping 60 pounds less, $4000 less costly too.
The only downsides are it's 15k here in Australia and we don't get the 40th anniversary edition
In indonesia usd15k 😅
Nice sporty bike, but I will stick with a little ZX6! Good beginner bike though.
I have the old 90's zxr400 and let me tell you, as this is an inline 4 there is not much vibration in any rev range, its super smooth
@@peergroth4563 Thanks for this comment. I've been trying to find information on this.
Love from India ❤
I don't know how good will it be for daily commute since is missing mid-range?
I daily mine, and will say- the lack of torque is something to get used to from stoplight to stoplight. On the interstate and mountains- the bike is great.
You should mention how much extra hp you get by changing the exhaust with the zx4-rr
None. Only in American markets do you get a boost
@midlife-crysis exactly like where this video was made. They are reviewing it at 54hp they are the only place that gets it with that little power. They should let everyone know it's like 24 extra hp everywhere else in the world.
@@richardsewell8657 So 78hp in the U.S?
@dantimber yup once unrestricted its 78hp just like the rest of the world. Wish it was around 95hp then it would be the perfect bike.
I love the 40th anniversary livery.
good mileage ,inline 4 ,80hp what else u want
Awesome review and such an awesome bike!!!
I love it but is it worth paying a bit more for a Honda cbr600rr
Its nice to see someone douning an i4 400 again. But itll not be a good road bike. I bet its great on track tho
Im 70 and I have one OMG I feel 20 again Magic
what track is that at the 7 min mark, background looks like a windows xp desktop background.
90s design and layout regurgitated as it’s still the best.
Any sports bike should be i4.
Simple as that.
Oh and have a yoshi rs3 on it.
its probably heavily restricted from the factory and would be very fruity if you went through the trouble to derestrict and tune it
Yeah makes ~74hp unrestricted
77 hp is plenty imo. Not everyone needs a Turbo Busa 😅
wish they were selling the 250cc 4 cylinder in europe
Spot on!
Am I crazy, but I thought this bike was supposed to have 100hp?? I remember thinking wow thats incredible out of a 400cc. I'm sure I read that before the launch of this bike....
I think it was supposed to be like mid 80s or something but the US version is even less. Something about emissions or something.
10k definitely isn't affordable for 400cc.
How much is the zx6r?
@@Black_Drako like 12k. That'll get me in trouble though 😂
In my country, the zx4rr is about 10k euros and the zx6r is 13500 euros.. its a big difference. The CBR600RR is 12k tough, wich is very tempting
@@Black_Drako I ended up buying a 24 ZX4RR. I actually love it to death. It's fast enough to do everything a regular bike can do but won't get you in trouble. And it's not even tuned yet.
@@LOL2YOU your zx4rr is the euro spec? With almost 80hp? What I love about the zx4rr is the inline4 screamer, high reving machine and the fact you can aparently use all gears without killing yourself. And aparently you can just put a slip on without messing with the ecu, and get an awesome sound.. the CBR has an amazing sound with stock exaust, and 12k is tempting but... 120 something hp is too much for me.
Did you use the unlimited version or the limited version for this test?
I'll stick to my 07 sv650s.
Go with Triumph! Brick and mortar, very established, great machines, great reputation! Go for it! Starting over is better than having zero income!
The ZX-4R has no real competitors. I'm sure less than 1% of all people looking to buy a ZX-4R are considering buying any of the other bikes mentioned in this video instead.
True!
They should have gone all out with a lighter frame and a sub 400lbs wet weight. At 415lbs wet this bike is unappealing. Plus an RR should come stock with fully adjustable suspension.
I like this bike just can’t stand the gauge. That screen looks so bad in my opinion
The only question is why this and not the 636?
Charm, and insurance premiums.
60 lb heavier and $4000 more expensive than the Ninja 500? No thanks. Hard to be charmed about it. So you want the full 72 wheel horsepower it makes instead of 56 HP? pay another $1500 for exhaust and ECU flash.
@@exothermal.sprocketnot everyone lives in USA.
@@exothermal.sprocketthat's a US thing, europe gets almost 80hp
@@exothermal.sprocket the 500 also doesn't make 56 whp, it makes 45 hp at the crank.
for ppl who really likes the bikes this is a lot better bike than the other examples but for ppl that only uses the bike because is cool and convenient but they change to a car before their 30s the other examples are better
Parallel Twins are the most boring engines out there. So for middleweight it’s easily a inline 4. Or if you go with little more power the L-2 in the Ducati supersport or the R9 3 cylinder wich is coming
Obviously never ridden a Triumph Bobber
Lol the zx4r you have is neutered with 50+hp.
The zx4r in asia gets 75hp not only that in ph zx4r group they unrestricted the bike for thirst of power making 299kph in dyno.
You're thinking of the US version. The one he is showing, as with all others in Europe, have the full 75hp stock.
@@t4r1k98 oh its good then in us they got bummed because the zx4r version they got was neutered so bad.
@@zylynlamis9285 yeah, I believe its a noise emissions thing for California and maybe a couple other states. Its funny how several recently released bikes, e.g. Honda Transalp, have ended up with fewer hp in the US than in Europe and Asia.

Please something else than green, kawasaki. Maybe some 80’s honda inspired liveries
R7 aprillia are the only complete sports riding position bikes...especially r7...
not sure why would some one buy it if the torque is garbage, I prefer to buy a chinese bike like qj motors srk 800 rr which is cheaper and win in every aspect.
It’s unfair to compare it to similar capacity or bigger capacity bikes, and that’s the point of it, screaming sounds at sensible-ish speeds.
1. inline 4 screamer
2. alarm clock
It weighs as much as a 900, for that reason alone it is obsolete. If it weighed 140 kg wet it would make more sense like the two strokes of old days.
It weighs about as much as 400 fours have always weighed, adjusted for a few more pounds from ABS and a cat.
Definitely my next bike, I’m going to wait until 2025 model
Smart move. The 23's (like mine) have a service issue for the frames (requires dealerships to drill a hole on the bottom of the frame for water egress), and an alternator rotor recall. The 24's are nice, but I anticipate the 25's will be ironed out and hopefully catches the satin black livery like the 24 ZX6R's.
You will be better off with a CB 750 hornet a torque cp2 engine
Sounds darn gud
In London this400 will give you lots of fun !I'm from RD 350 LC DAYS THOUGH 2 STROKE I LOVE TO GO UP AND DOWN THE BOX AND WORKING THE ENGINE !GATE13SW6CREW CFC
Tbh many moons ago that would be considered ' is it running"?' Lol
Progressive quoted me $5K + USD a year for full coverage on this bike... + The fact that you need to tune this in the US, thus spending MORE money, it makes no sense.
That's wild. I pay $25/ month full coverage plus gap insurance for my 4RR

@@MJT-DA sure, problem is everything went up except the wages. That’s a fact so still overpriced.
@@gigi9467 From someone who has seen where the cost of parts of vehicles go. I can tell you that car manufacturers only make 14% profit on selling a vehicle. Motorcycles on the other hand have to price them higher since it’s already a category that is niche in itself. Add the chip shortage from TSMC which also makes semi conductor chips needed for the TFT, ECU and other Accelerometer sensors along with the cost of steel going up and the price makes sense. I can say that some cars are overpriced but thats closed minded. If you know anyone in the industry you’ll understand why the cost of manufacturing cars and bikes went up significantly. Wages not going up isnt their fault its our governments. What I recommend to do is look up countries with the best Economy and 2 of them are the USA and Japan, get a degree (which im doing) and move. Its harsh world unfortunately.
@@MJT-DA funny, you claim to know it all, but fax proof otherwise last four years manufactures have sold less and made a higher margin specially young cars. Middleweight bike 🤔. I thought middleweight bikes were 600cc .
this bike got more power that a 600cc
They also call the Duke 990 a middleweight. Everything wants to be a middleweight now for marketing.
Kawasaki ninja zx 4 RAR RAR 🦖🦖🦖🦖
Overpriced, underpowered and weighs the same as ZX6r. 💀

For a non-racer, the price is terrible. Just saying.
