The 'Encanto' Cast on Their Own Superpowers and the Mysteries of Mom's Sancocho | Rotten Tomatoes

- Mirabel Madrigal is the only person in her extraordinary family not to be born with a special ability - like super strength or the power to heal through cooking - but in Disney's 'Encanto,' she learns she doesn't need magical gifts to be a hero. Ahead of Disney's latest animated adventure, which takes audiences to the mountains of Colombia, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez chatted with its cast and creators to find out what it meant to them to work on this particular film, what superpowers they possess in their own respective families, and what meals give them life. Lin-Manuel Miranda talks about the challenges and excitement of working with Colombian musicians, while Stephanie Beatriz explains how John Leguizamo influenced her decision to pursue acting as a child. Jessica Darrow, Wilmer Valderrama, and Diane Guerrero talk about the lessons to learn from their characters, and find out who among writer-directors Charise Castro Smith, Jared Bush, and Byron Howard considers dad jokes a superpower. Oh, and almost everyone has a story about the mysteries of their mom's sancocho.

Wow 94% already in rotten tomatoes, proud of our colombian culture, next step oscars for soundtrack
They have to get one the soundtrack is so good
Si es cierto todo para arriba viva Colombia
Oh I hope so! God I want this to get an Oscar SO BAD, and especially Lin Miranda! I want him to make history!
I genuinely think this should be a contender for best movie..
🇨🇴❤️🇨🇴
I love this interviewer so much, she properly listens to everything everyone is saying and makes everyone feel so comfortable being able to relate to most of what they're saying. I love how she's a fan of their prior work and doesn't hesitate to let that side of her out while still being professional enough to keep the flow going without missing a single beat.
Yes I agree she seems super sweet smart
She was great!!!! Loved her!!!
Very nicely said
I like the notion of Lin Manuel seeing his wife cry and internally go "Yessss!"
but also.. how serendipitous is it that Stephanie Beatriz looked at John Leguiziamo and found a direction in life, and this is mirrored by Mirabel finding purpose in Bruno's vision?
Oh yea…….. maybe meant to be
I swear this is by far the best Disney movie! I laugh, cried, and felt in love with all the characters.
The interviewer is so delightful, the questions are personal and smart and the pace of the conversation is really good
She's very nice and light. What's her name? All I catched is she's Dominican
Need a spin off so bad. You don't have 12 characters, give them 10 minutes of screentime and just shout "done!" I need way more Felix and Julietta and Camillo and Lucia....
Who's Lucia?
@@SeaIify Luisa
I need a Camilo and Mirabel duet song!
@@blackswanaldc8553YES
Love the interviewer and the questions, especially asking everyone what special gifts they possess. Inviting them to share in a way that we really get to know them a bit.
The only thing I don't love is the "I'm the Dominican btw". She managed to make it relevant in the other interviews but not the last one
After a very very long time, Naz Perez has emerged to be an outstanding interviewer! My god I loved her questions and how she had a connection. Jeez imagine Ryan Seacrest or Kelly Rippa making it cliched or all about themselves. Love love this interview!
The music is great taking in two accounts the huge amount of folk in Colombia. It was an amazing job there and i like the cousin´s reference. Lin-Manuel is just right!. Furthermore...guys... don´t make a thing about Colombia´s name... remember Colombia comes from Cristobal Colón in Spanish, but in English is Chris Columbus... anyway: great songs, nice history, beautiful images... a hearth full love letter from Disney to Colombia. A must watch!
😉 well said 🤗✌️😎
Omg….. I fell in love with this movie. I’ve been watching it over and over again. Great job on this move.
Me too!!
I feel too old to like it and my friends laugh at me because I like it even tho they do too lol and then her (my bff’s) 8 year old sis likes it so it’s kinda awkward for me
I love tio Bruno and Mirabel, I think they casted the perfect actors for these roles. And the interviewer does a great job indeed
Stephanie and John show so much affinity.. And I thought it was really cute 💗
I guess I'm in love with Jessica Darrow's Voice.
Naz is asking great questions, and Lin, as always, has great responses!
The music in encanto had me weak. And yes two caterpillars is your best song. I was sobing and my roommates didn't get it because they don't speak Spanish.
Turn on the English subtitles for them and help them out 🤣. But seriously, I haven’t spoken Spanish in years, so I only understood some of it directly, but just the melody and the visual during that song had me in tears. Lin Manuel Miranda is so talented.
@@normette no. If they cared enough they can learn it themselves.
@@annies6566 well…that’s cynical, but ok.
The song is in English in the end credits.
@@bibliophilelady6106 the words in the English version is not a 100% translation of the Spanish (original) version. Alot of the themes are similar but the words are not the same. The themes in both versions are love (beginning), sadness (middle), and then hope (end).
sancocho and chicken soup are definetely the protagonists of the interviews
At 20:48 Did Valderrama really call the main character Isabel? And Diane noticed hahaha
Yeah I caught that too. I was lile waaaiit whaaat who does he play again?! And I realized he messed up
Yeah, it was confusing. They were all so kind to one another and had such good fun :)
So many people like to hate on Lin and the movie, but they don't know how much work and effort the animators Lin/the song writer and the voices put into this movie! It's a very magical and bittersweet movie!! Hate on Lin and everyone all you want. It's amazing! ✨💕
Who hates on him? This is the 2nd comment I've seen that said this and I'm over here like, "did I miss something?" He's gotten so much renown for Hamilton. And they won awards for Moana and now this movie looks like it's gonna be an Oscar contender too. So where is the hate?
@@notoyaarthur1990 I really don't know lol he did get hate for the in the heights movie but idk I just saw someone comment "Stop hating on Lin" so I thought something was wrong.
❤️❤️❤️ Lin, he’s got so much talent “Hamilton, In The Heights and Encanto” to name a few
This issue with ITH was with casting which he had no control over. Also the story didn't age well but that's a different story
@@Bllue wym ? Which casting? N wym the story didn’t age well
Dos orruguitas was so beautiful and I can't get through it without crying!
This was an awesome movie to watch I really hope this wins a Oscar
Yes!
Lin Manuel Miranda is such an inspiration to people whether he knows it or not. im Australian and i love this movie. i fell in love with his work when moana came out then i listened to in the heights and then i fell in love with Hamilton and now i love encanto so much. he is the reason i started song writing.
Great interview! I couldn't stop tearing up during Encanto and listened to the soundtrack nonstop afterwards! Thank you to everyone who worked on this incredible movie. Loved the representation, animation, characters, and overall story! Phenomenal job!
I wasn't even going to watch this movie, until I saw John was in the cast. I'm so glad I did.
This is definitely the best disney animation movie I've ever watched. Definitely in love with all the characters from abuela to the in laws down to the grandkids, everyone of them. I watch it with my husband at least once everyday. :)
Not Sancocho being an ever-present theme in this interview! 😂🙌🏾😋🍲✨
What a beautiful thoughtful intelligent and fun collection of interviews!
Dos oruguitas is my favorite song 🎵
This is a fantastic interview! Loved it and the interviewer really gels with the cast - great questions and sharing of stories. LOVE Encanto - it's incredible and loved the Columbian culture.
I love John and all the wonderful actors, I'm just happy about this project (movie) 🤗❤️❤️❤️
OMG DOS ORIGITAS made me cry its SOOO GOOD
Interviewer came prepared. Easy but very informative and personal ❤️👏🏻
This interview was excellent! Thank you very much. 🤗🥰🎶
This whole time I’m like John Leguizamo sounds like Sid…..nuh duuh he IS Sid 😂😂😂
Great interviews! I enjoyed everyone's thoughts and aspects on the movie and all of their hardwork that was put into the movie.
The interviewer did a great job.
Wow I am from Florida half Mexican and Ecuador
From coco Disney mexico movie and now ENCANTO DISNEY COLOMBIA
Que linda película
One of best interviewers I’ve ever experienced-the best celebrity one period. Real questions! Really interesting!!
Just watched it yesterday. I was laughing and I’m tears. It was so good and the music was phenomenal. He’s a musical genius!!
I love this movie so so much ! I’ve watched it 9 times already in less than 2 weeks lol
I love this man, he deserves all good in his life. 😊♥️✌️😎
What so amazing is that there's a place in Colombia just like the one represented in this movie. Please look up "El valle del cocora". "Valley of the Cocora". You'll see the similarities specially the tall palm trees. 🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴 Thank you Disney!! And thank you to you sir!!
Damn, now I really want some Sancocho ❤️ Such a lovely interview! You can see, feel and hear how much passion and care went into representing each character. It has easily become one of my favorite Disney movies! Thank You for the representation and celebrating the beauty of our Latinx community 🥰
I really hope it does good and get awards cause what an amazing movie
Dos Origuitas deserves an Oscar
I immediately began to look for a place that sells sancocho. I’ve never had it but now I just must!! Great interview. My family and I love the movie!
This is so awesome! I'm listening while working and it felt like the Madrigals themselves are talking hahaha
Dos Oruguitas gave me all the feels.
Ah, the greatest song Lin has ever written...and at least half of the audience can't fully experience it because: no subs. I couldn't even get my closed captions to translate, had to google. Knew I should have stuck with Spanish after 10th grade.
I think part of its beauty is that you can understand it by feeling it.
You can actually see the lyrics if you turn on the English Cc
they play an english cover during the credits, it's also a part of the soundtrack
the entitlement!!! it’s like when you visit non english speaking country and expect everyone to speak english
yo Charise Castro Smith looks just like a Madrigal! That's so crazy
She has Mirabel's hair!!
Omg John is always so funny
Shoutout to the interviewer!! She was amazing!
0:43 this is my favorite analogy now
oooo I noticed the waltz part in Mirabel's song, I love that song
I agree with his wife. Dos Oruguitas is the best song he's ever written.
I love this movie very much and if it will be real I want spend time with madrigals and casita
Came for Encanto, stayed for the interviewer. Excellent questions👍🏾😁
Amazing❤️
Wow, his reaction to the inner child question brought me to tears! I'm sure the lead up helped but wow, Lin, yes, the weightlessness of Under the Sea got me hard!
John L's one man shows are so amazing and powerful!
Encanto is awesome....next stop, Oscars!
I think I need to try this Sancocho...
This is awesome!! I knew I had some sore of connection with this movie, especially with Mirabel, and now knowing Beatriz mom is from Bolivia just like mine I understand it! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Two Orugitas is the best song he's ever written for definite.
Magic realism = Colombia.... that's beautiful...
7:29 "Ugh Thanks"
Oh. He is Bruno. Cool! Love the movie!
John Leguizamo is one of the most talented but underrated actors in Hollywood
I didn't even realize she was on Brooklyn 911, wow she was always the mean one right smh didn't even recognize her amazing
The funny thing is that I only know Wilmer Valderrama for being Handy Manny cause I used to watch that show
really what is it about a chorus line... morales was my soul given song for years as a kid
I can't be the only one thinking when he was writing, he def had his buddy weird al come over and play accordion for him.
Every time I hear Stephanie Beatriz speaking in her normal voice, I feel like she's just Rosa Diaz pretending to be someone else.
Yei for chuño y Bolivia!
❤️
There are a ton of Disney songs in 3/4. A lot of princess songs like Once Upon A Dream (Sleeping Beauty), So This Is Love (Cinderella), and Someday My Prince Will Come (Snow White). So I'm confused why he would say that..
@@jeniecelyons7266A Wish Is a Dream Your Heart Makes, Let's Go Fly a Kite, Feed The Birds, Chimney song and laughing song as well from Mary Poppins, God Help The Outcasts, Finding Nemo theme, Something's Up With Jack, That French song everyone uses on TikTok that's from Ratatouille. There are a bunch like I said.
@@ToriTreble Those last three aren't really "Disney songs" though; musical score isn't what he meant. And Nightmare Before Christmas is owned by Disney but it's not part of the "Disney canon" like they're talking about
@@MrSquare It absolutely is. There are still more songs. Dunno why a man who was in a Mary Poppins film would say Disney doesn't make many 3/4 songs when the OG film has a ton. Those Sherman brothers knew how to make bops
The beta testers loved Bruno and Lin-Manuel STILL didn't submit it for an Oscar. There goes his EGOT gone for 2022.
Ooooo, “LatinX” 😂 and the snapping. What was this?
The snapping is a theater thing, but the Latinx is just stupid 🤣
No latin x, LATINOS
Literally my entire family and any other Latino/Hispanic I know doesn’t use that crap, I get we’re trying to be “inclusive” but our language is gendered and it shouldn’t be an issue smh
If u are the creators i wanna ask smth so am i the only one who isn't obsessed whit camilo idk maybe im not but why did they or you made camilo dance so uhh... wierd(sorry) i know its hard to do but im just asking its a good movie and yeah
Why does the interviewer need to mention she's Dominican every 5 seconds
Is it weird if i said i have a crush on felix... Like... When i just the same age as luisa... :|
Well, chuño is not a meal itself. It's dehydrated potato and it's present in many dishes. My favorite meal with chuño is 'ají de chuño'. I'm pretty sure that's what Stephanie Beatriz tried because it's really delicious and it's mostly just chuño.
I mean... When ppl ask me my favorite meal i genuinely answer just "potatos", so i kinda get her and didnt think the answer was weird until you brought it up ADJAHSHSH
My mom’s salsa, beans and chicken with rice.
Best Disney movie ever.
Colombia* not Columbia 🙄🙄
It ain’t that deep tf
@@Purrrrrrsia hun they're just correcting the spelling, calm down, iT's NoT tHaT dEeP!
I probably DISLIKE around 99% of musicals. Maybe more. Out of Disney (or anywhere), Aladdin comes to mind as the near perfect musical, in which I love every song and like the story.
Outside of that, I may like a few songs here and there, like When you wish upon a star, some songs from Marry Poppins, Into the unknown... So it's very difficult to care about them.
Having said that, Encanto's first song is brilliant and really captured my attention on the movie. It's my favorite. Waiting on miracle and We don't talk about Bruno are two other great songs. Overall, it's a great musical. That is something I rarely say.
I'm for sure FAR FAR FAR from being a music shows enthusiast or a Broadway fan. I really dislike Glee. I even avoid watching musicals. I didn't know Encanto was a musical because as a general rule I avoid trailers and info about movies that I haven't seen.
But hell if I can't recognize and love a great performance anywhere. Be it in AGT or anywhere else, I'm fully capable of loving great songs and performances. They just have to be really special to me. And boy did Encanto deliver it.
I wasn't expecting that tough lady from Brooklyn nine-nine to deliver such an amazing performance as a teenager, let alone sing this beautifully! And of course, I would never expect to like this much songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda. I never watched and don't care about Hamilton as a musical (even though I care about what I know of the story).
I remember I used to always say “I hate horror movies,” because there existed so many popular horror films I disliked - then once while discussing films I liked I was saying “I don’t like horror … except for like, The Shining … and Get Out… and It Follows… the Witch… oh and The Exorcist is surprisingly… hm… okay, maybe it isn’t that I dislike horror, I dislike bad horror ?”
I am reminded of this when someone says they don’t like musicals - “except for.”
There is a lot of bad fluffy musicals out there that give the whole genre a bad reputation but there are also so many works of pure art by people like Lin Manual Miranda and Stephen Sondheim.
If you ever want some recommendations do not hesitate to ask 🥳
@@Nothing_Israel Thank you for your cool reply! Yes, people who love movies just fall in love for trully great movies, regardless of the genre.
However, I'll admit to tolerate more certain movie genres, because I tend to like them. So even when sometimes the movie is not so great I kind of have a good experience.
I'm sure I'll still not love the genre musical, but there will always be a chance of liking it if it's really good.
Sure, I'll be happy to know what you recommend. Thanks!
yeah! Stephanie Beatriz did such a good job on this. I haven't really watched many musicals but Hamilton was definitely one of my favourites along with Encanto. Lin is such a legend mannn
Dude,Hamilton is about as far from a traditional musical as you could get simply because the music never stops. It just changes tempo to match the scene. It's less a play with songs sung in it and more of a music soundtrack that tells a story like a lot of songs just by themselves tend to do.
Please, it's Col⭕mbia
FEZ!
isn't that the guy from that 70s show?
Yes he is
I wonder why casita didnt try to save Antonio?
Is Sancocho the filled & baked bread things?? What exactly is it?RIP, Robin Williams. I love Aladdin too.:-(:-(:-O:-D:-):-D
Sancocho is a soup! It's amazing the flavor is so rich given it takes all day to make!
Love the movie. Hate the interviewer's use of Latinx.
Colorism continues to be an issue, I see. 😕
What do you mean? These people hardly look like telenovela stars, who are actually whitewashed
I would have loved to have seen or rather HEARD the actors talk more. The host is nice and cute but she's too talky and too many words. Let the actors speak more
I found her delightful and had a lot of insightful questions tho. Each to their own
This was good until she said Latinx and ruined it. Some people just live to be colonized.
This was an awesome movie to watch I really hope this wins a Oscar
