Great review and advice/suggestions. I appreciate it. I ordered the Gretsch Honey Dipper in July 2023 from a local mom and pop guitar store, Bob’s Guitars. Scheduled to arrive in January 2024. I assume they must be in demand. No hurry though.

Hiya .. I bought one of these beauties from a local outlet here in Brisbane Au. last year, I really like it the brass body responds to the music and the instrument's sound brings to mind the school brass band I played in x number of yrs ago :) good luck.

Nice review Jack. I was surprised how close it sounds to my National Delphi.

It is interesting to know something that has come to my personal attention as of June 2023 concert in my guitar collection. At present, I’ve got two acoustic guitars manufactured by Guild and one Spanish guitar built by Brazilian manufacturer Gianini. Per chance, each of my current electric guitars was built by a different manufacturer, including a homemade model that was assembled largely from repurposed Stratocaster parts. One brand that I have yet to own is Gretsch, and one type of instrument I have yet to own is a resonator. I should consider grabbing a model like this one or similar when 2024 begins and I (supposedly) terminate my self-imposed embargo against getting equipment.

Sounds fine to me too. I used to have a Gretsch 6-string banjo with that headstock, wish I'd kept it. Still have the wooden-bodied G3170 reso with the spider cone. That needs a thorough overhaul after 20 years of moderate use. Better move along now before I get the wants for this tasty little biscuit-cone thing. 🙂

Hello Jack and followers, I got a Honey Dipper back in 2015 that for some lunatic designer mishap came with an awful mauve finish, that I immediately had to scratch off in order to give her back the realness she deserves. Soundwise it's a very well balanced guitar from bottom to top, that I can clearly recommend. I play her with 011. flatwounds (which doesn't matter) and she's always been a good and reliable companion. Plays smoothly with a great tone throughout the fretboard. If one doesn't fetish the "one and only original National from the 1930s" - give it your try. And if you're still disappointed, I'll never speak again to you :-)

I almost bought this guitar, but instead, I got the Epiphone Dobro Hound Dog M-14 ($749) and the Dobro case ($129). It was a about $150 more than the Honey Dipper ($699). They're almost identical, other than the headstock and the cone cover plate/bridge design.

I wish they had made this in a weathered finish. Then it would match my saxophone. The swamp dog sound just doesn't do it for me.
