  • Made the drive west from my place on the Seneca Lake to explore the wild trout streams of Steuben County where I have never fished. Things started slow but I ended up catching over 30 wild fish. Left out some of the action to try to protect the identity of the last stream I fished. It was on private property but I spoke with adjacent landowners and apparently the owner allows access at this time (as evidenced by heavy trails and some trash which I picked up). Anyway had a blast exploring new water and was impressed by the 2 small streams I explored!!

    They say smell is the strongest trigger of memory. I can smell that creek right now! Many good days there, though I haven’t caught many fish I’ve spent some good time on that creek with a friend of mine.

    I grew up in Hornell and when in my younger days that's about all I did was fish and hunt. A dear friend and I used to lay on our bellies using fly rods with no reels on them and fish tiny little feeder creeks all around the reservoir system for brookies. All native. Hunted over near Avoca too with my longbow for years and the feeder streams over that way were over run with brownies in the fall. Big multi pounders too. Moved to Roch. in mid 74 and found a really nice trib to Lake Ontario and fished it for many years for steelhead, and browns and rainbows with my Orvis 5 wt rod. That stream was a world class fishery and I kid you not. Then fishing one afternoon in the fall all these fish were swimming back towards the lake down stream, and I mean hundreds of them. Never saw anything like it. The water was just boiling like a cauldron. About 5 minutes after it calmed down not a fish to be seen. Looked up stream and saw about an 18" high wave of dark black water headed down towards. Went by me and stunk like all get out. A farmer up stream manure gave way and the fishing was NEVER any good again. that's my story and I'm stickin to it.

      Wow thats a crazy story, so sad though. I have seen some fishkills on streams from spills and its so disheartening.

    Another great video. I started my trout fishing with my dad in Steuben County way back in the fifties when I was a kid. I still make an occasional trip to the Cohocton River, where I caught my first trout. I only live an hour away. I fish mostly in PA now but NY still has some great fishing spots.

      Yeah I was going to fish the Cohocton that day but the mosquitos were sooo bad I headed to a different spot (they bugs were still bad). Very cool area that I'd like to explore more in the future! Thanks for watching and commenting!!

      @ Chuck N I lived on the cohocton for 20 years and have caught some phenomenal browns. Since they did the 2 year old trout I've noticed more wild fish in the stream. A lot of the feeders are a nice get away from other people.

    John, you have a great presentation, solid music, good B-roll film, excellent description of your gear and plenty-o-fish. Safe to say I enjoy your adventures. I fish a lot in your 'area', but haven't made to move to fly fishing yet...seems I should....keep-em coming.

    Just came across your channel today while tying up some nymphs. When I saw Steuben county in the title, it became a game of guess the stream. I agree with all the comments about the Cohocton river. What great trout stream from here in Bath, all the way up to its beginning. I’ve 50 fish days from Avoca to Bath. Can’t beat he fishing.

      Thats really cool, glad you came across the channel!! I live about 2.5 hrs from Bath but its about half that to my family's cottage on Seneca, definitely planning on hitting that area again. I was going to fish the Cohocton but the mosquitos were so bad where I parked that I literally ran to my car (with bug dope on) the next stream wasn't much better, it was right after we had a long period of wet weather so the bugs were bad but I checked out a few spots on the Cohocton and it looked really cool. Thanks for commenting!

    Another nice video on a familiar water this time. That first section only fishes well after a rain when there is a bit more color. Some of the spookiest trout I've ever come across as you witnessed. Glad to see you got a brookie too! I have only encountered them up in the higher waters there. tight lines!

    • @deaddriftoutdoors2940
      @deaddriftoutdoors2940  2 роки тому

      Thanks man, yeah I am used to lots of spooky trout but man those fish were crazy difficult. I can imagine it would be great to hit with rising water. Do you know if that lower section is always turbid like that, it hadn't rained recently but was def off color which wasn't bad but I was just curious. Thanks for watching and I can't wait to get back out there next season, really nice water!

    • @sfirlit5938
      @sfirlit5938 2 роки тому

      Yeah between those first two sections you fished the stream gets influenced by some spring fed marshy ponds that put some color to the water. It generally has a bit of tint. There is also some major beaver activity in recent years that have unfortunately backed up what used to be a nice section of stream just below where you first started by those bridges in that lower farm field. I've been told by locals that 30 years ago Brookies dominated that stream but as you witnessed browns have overtaken. There are unicorns that pop up as well but i have yet to find one...naturally produced tiger trout from the cross breeding of the two species. I know someone that has caught 2. Very different little stream for sure.

    Amazing video, I love your content. I moved to the Finger Lakes regions a year ago and love it. If you don't mind me asking, how do you find new streams with wild trout? Everyone seems very closed mouth and from what I have seen the internet has limited info. Tight lines man

    • @deaddriftoutdoors2940
      @deaddriftoutdoors2940  2 роки тому +1

      So I have lots of ways to find streams. One place to start are the PFR brochures on DEC website these will indicate if wild trout are present, often the headwaters section or tribs of these streams will have wild fish. Also there is a DEC resource mapper GIS resource where you can click on streams and often it will designate presence of trout or presence of wild trout although this is not always up to date or accurate. I also just check stream temps in the heat of the summer and anywhere that stays below 70 during low flows and high heat should have some trout. Then I explore and prospect for fish. I strike out a lot or find really limited numbers but sometimes I find a good one! Lots of asking permission to fish as well as most/many are private land. Hope that helps

    I live in Steuben County in prattsburgh ny, I lived on the cohocton for years and fished a lot of the feeders. Awesome fishing from bath ny all the way to the headwaters in spring water. Any time you'd like to hit some public access feeders streams in the spring let me know. I've been filling fly boxes all winter for next year.

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Its funny I moved here about 10 yrs ago and have known about the Cohocton for years but just hadn't made the drive over there. I had planned to fish it the day of this vid but ended up on the smaller tribs. I am planning on fishing it more next season as it looked and sounds really good. So much water, so little time!! get back in the woods on the cohocton River and fish between. Coshocton and Avoca back near the railroad tracks area along 390.. thatll get you into some nice browns both stocked and wild but ultimately there are some slammers living back there just fish every pocket. lots of big browns wild and stocked... I grew up fishing the cohocton literally every day after school. also check the lake tribs in the spring for wild rainbow runs. great time man!
