Wild Trout Slam on Overlooked Stream | Fly Fishing - Southern Tier, NY
Decided to fly fish a stream I had drove by/over many many times on my way to other destinations. Had a hunch it held wild trout as it was a trib to a system with wild and stocked fish and looked like it had decent flows and habitat. It wasn't my greatest day of flyfishing and I didn't catch any big ones but I did find 3 species of wild trout and might have just scratched the surface of a really productive little fishery. It never hurts to explore.

I have drven by this small stream for years. I always suspected it might have wild trout and one day I finally stopped and took a few casts. The next week I dedicated the day to exploring and fishing this hidden gem. I had some challenges but eventually found success a...

You won't find many streams with branch overhangs like that unless you fish in the west. Most of the streams back East have had their shorelines cut down, and that's why the fishing is not great in many places. That stream is a great specimen of what you need in a good trout fishery. High banks, banked brush, and cool water. Wow.

No matter the size, they're all good fish... Another great video! What releases are you running? I used to use a "Blacks" release closest to the ball, and a "Roamer" release about 10 ft above. Don't know the graph you are using, is it possible to turn up the sensitivity to enable you to see thermals?

Awesome video!!! I'm racking my brain trying to figure out that stream since it's somewhat my neck of the woods or even right in my vicinity and there is so many nice little overlooked streams near here with 3 major highways. I'm thinking with this rain that we just finally got here again and is forecasted should start seeing some lake run browns and landlockeds pretty soon just north of me about an hour.

@@deaddriftoutdoors2940 now I'm gonna have to do some more research. Rainbows could feasibly be anywhere given New York state's stocking practices. They have been known to stock breeder sized fish in smaller lesser known streams along with the usual spots.

When you mentioned @ 5:39 that you put on the #14 beadhead and had to add split shot I immediately wondered if you ever fish tungsten beadheads. Nowadays I almost always fish tungsten beadheads, this enables me to fish a #18 or #16 nymph as a dropper (or larger of course) using a 2.0mm tungsten bead. From the looks of it, a 2.0mm tungsten nymph would get down in most of that water. Nice brookie!

nice slam! flows are still pretty low unfortunately? I fished the catskills and the delaware river is flowing good thanks to releases from the reservoirs. We still got some nice brookies out of some headwater tribs too despite the low flows. Still plenty of water in the holes they hunker in at least. Do you have any trips planned for the fall? I had a friend that made two identical 7’9” 4Wt bamboo fly rods for myself and brother. Both have passed and I try to fish them every-time I go out. One thing that I found is that the bamboo is heavier than a Graphite, but that a heavier reel provides a nice balance so it doesn’t seem to be that heavy in casting.

I have the same wood frame fish net as yours and the fish I have been catching are too big for the net,so I only get to use it once in a while. Last season here in Vermont I got a nice 21 in brown that was fat and 5 pounds,I landed another 20+’brown last season but just as I landed the brown it’s teeth cut the line so I didn’t get to pick it up before it found the water . So far this season I have got a massive 24’ Brown and a 19’ brown and another 14’ brown trout. I have also got a lot of brook trout, over 100,and 2 big rainbows and the biggest brook trout I have ever got which was 16’. In all my years of fishing I have never got a record sized brook trout or rainbow in one spot in one day inside 2 hours. I keep one of the 3 biggest fish’s for the three species each year to eat so I keep the biggest brown then rainbow and 5 big brook trout to eat. So in one day I got the 24 in brown then the 16’ rainbow and the 15’ brook trout and release. The rest for the while season till next year. Great fishing in Vermont this year compared to many bad ones in the past. I will squeeze the hook barn so I can make sure they stay alive after freeing them.

Hey John, love you videos. I fish a lot of small streams like you do only I fish in north central Pennsylvania in the mountains near Williamsport . What kind of wondering what you would suggest for a rod and reel to fish those small creeks, the Mountain Streams where you don't have much room to cast. I see you using a small rod sometimes and was just wondering what you would recommend. Also want to invite you if you ever get down to my area near Williamsport it would be great to know and to take you out into some beautiful Mountain Streams and fish for Native brookies and Browns

So I know people have different prefences and I notice a lot of guys fishing longer rods on small creeks to dapple flys or reach their flies into tight spots. I however prefer a really short rod so I can cast under branches and also its easier to carry through bushwacks and such. I guess its personal presence but I love 6'6" length rod, 1-3 weight. Looks like you have a ton of nice creeks around your area. Its a little outside my daytrip range but I would love to get down there at some point! Thanks for comment/question
