I had no idea prism photography was a thing until my sister bought me a 6" triangular glass prism last week. I didn't realise it was for photography at first, I'm into optics and I like little didactic curiosities which demonstrate physics principles so I would have been quite content to let it sit on a shelf with my rocks and stirling engines and so forth, until I read the insert in the packet 'for beautiful artistic photographs'. Thanks for showing me what I'm supposed to do with it and what effects I might achieve, I'm quite excited to take it out for a photowalk now!
I got a pair of kaleidoscope sunglasses from a store called hot rags for $20 but if you can wait I know you can buy them for like $9 on Amazon www.amazon.com/dp/B073PZ9T16/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_x_FCN-zbZAAA22N as for the Giant school lense I'm still currently looking for one like it but I assume a shorter wider prism might do kind of the same thing
Thanks for this video! Now I know what to add to my collection of accessories for shoots :) I use different mirrors a lot, different shiny accessories like chains or Christmas decor, lighters and some self made things, which I made from shiny colourful stones from the kids store :) So when I put them in front of the lens and the sun or my light is shining on them, then they add sparkles, reflections and different colours to the photos. And the whole photo looks completely different.
Thank you :) Here you can see the effect of the shiny stones that I clued on a transparent beige material and made a hole in the middle for the lens: fancyshoots.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Boho-Hochzeit.jpg and here is the effect of the self made mirror: fancyshoots.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Paar-Foroshooting.jpg Clients love the effects :) And I can't wait to try prisms now :)
I'm planning on crafting a DIY prism spinner by drilling a hole into one of the ends of the prism, and then contact cementing a brill bit inside of the hole. Once connected to the drill, I want to play with the drill's RPM and my camera's shutterspeed or framerates to create infinite/looping refractions.
I can't find that "giant school prism" anywhere! does anyone know what I would actually search to find something similar? I see so many of the long triangular prisms everywhere though...
those type of prism are usually found inside binoculars (or telescopes I think but never disassembled one), they act as 90° mirrors, you could found smaller one in cheap binoculars.
Does anyone know if this works well with 35mm film? I'm eager to try it but just a little worried it won't look the same in the negatives as it did through the viewfinder.
Excellent demonstration! Gives a insight into all the different types of glass effects you can use. My only suggestion would have been to remove the "How to use" parts of the video since it's repetitive, as the steps are the same.
Sometimes you can fin on eBay some big lot of different lenses from broken eyeglasses or old cameras etc , i found this one on a lot like this , i paid 5$ for 10 pieces
Great tips Mathieu, thanks for the video. Do you think a big magnifying lens will have a cool effect. I found one online and not sure wether to buy it or not.

I usually tend to use what's naturally lying around me. like a glass or metal plate, an old broken prism, broken Jewellery pieces, etc.
