I love these episodes. Super chill and the quality of the pictures is excellent... not to forget the episode itself 👍🏻 it is really hard to decide but i prefer the vertical shot more because of that extra layer... but i guess the horizontal would also look also printed or as a background on a big nice screen 👌🏻😉
Such a phenomenal set of images Michael... Brilliant! Especially the last ones with the diffused light are so incredibly good. Great editing of the video too, love the b-roll!
The photo at 4:55 with the “flames” at the bottom of the image is GREAT! Both photos at 9:25 are excellent, but if I had to choose I would pick the vertical one. I love the way the “flames” jump into the green in the upper left corner of the shot. And then the backlit photos towards the end are beautiful. You prove yet again that you have a magically artistic eye. Thank you, Michael.
Enjoyed the video and agree that shooting Fall colors in CA is challenging. The Eastern Sierras are beautiful and a pleasant surprise for those who spend most of their time on the Western slopes. There are many resources on the web that are helpful when planning photography in the Eastern Sierras during the Fall and planning ahead helps to find some of the more interesting locations that are in color during your visit.
Michael, stunning images! I spent nine days in Acadia to outstanding colors. My first time photographing autumn scenes under both moonlit skies and predawn sunlight. A fox came close to me one morning in the dark trying to scare me his or her barking;. Also, a few owls calling in the still darkness. The wildlife sounds adds to the experience.
The horizontal shot, cropped in is my favorite of the two. I find the rocks in the background a distraction. That said, your backlit shots are AMAZING! Well done.
I liked both the horizontal and vertical, but my favorite was the vertical shot with the rocks in the background.... and I really loved the backlit shots at about the 12:45 mark. Those colors against the dark background really popped!
Well, thanks a lot, Michael, for once again asking us to try and pick a favorite! Both are wonderful. While the horizontal feels more warm and intimate, I do love the rocks and composition of the vertical. Fall seemed to go too fast this year so I am glad you got to enjoy it. Wow, you surely got some lovely images. Wish you well.
I’m not a subscriber, but I’ve been following you for the past year. I truly enjoy all your photo shoots and love the way you create them. You’re one of the best! Please keep doing what you do-it brings so much relaxation to my weekends (that’s when I watch your UA-cam videos). That vertical photo is absolutely amazing-I’d rate it 20 out of 10!
So inspiring. You're one of the best at that on u tube and with a beautiful gentle style. Thank you. Oh, and for me it has to be the vertical shot.. the composition flows into that area.
9:26 while both are good. I personally like the horizontal shot since it eliminates the out of contrast grayish color of the rocks and keeps it more balanced, but that's just my opinion. Thanks for the ride along, Michael . Looking out for your future endeavors.
Love the vertical shot 9:19 with the rock in the background 13:10 and 13:15 😮 I want to drive up to Tallulah Gorge and get some shots of the fall colors. Thanks for sharing, Michael! ❤
Wonderful Michael! The Eastern Sierra is truly magical. I just returned from a trip to the Canadian Maritime provinces, and while there was lots of color (near peak), those rolling hills just can't compete with the rugged beauty of the eastern Sierra. IMO of course. I try to get up there every year, this time of year if I can.
The colours there are amazing ! Breathtaking scenery I wish this was.my back yard ! Things are little closer in the UK! Love photos you really have captured the beauty😊
A beautiful place Michael. As to which I prefer? The vertical but with half the rocks cropped from the top (4x5?). Always enjoyable to watch you working.
Amazing photos. For the vertical and square crop that you asked for opinions - both are awesome. My preference was the vertical shot with a splash of sky at the top. Thanks for sharing!
Spectacular images. as far as the vertical/horizontal, depends on where I would hang the photo as both are beautiful. Again, thank you for a truly relaxing, educational video. I did enjoy the Birds Eye view of the trees, that was amazing as well. Thank you.
Nice compositions of the Aspens! I like the back-lite ones the most. I ended up capturing mostly Aspens compositions this past September - October because it was pretty much cloudless for the 2 weeks I was in SW Colorado. However, I have been in the pursuit of finding a nice grove of Aspens for the last few years and this year I think I’ve come away with one large panorama that I really like. I did a test print of the pano and I’m really pleased with the results, so it just a matter of how big the final print will be.
Normally I have a definitive answer when you ask which one do you like better, but between those two crops, I honestly can't choose which I like more. They are both great in their own way.
I really appreciate this video, because I like to shoot in the mountains east of San Diego where there are patches of color and it can be hard to find vantage points. I always struggle with getting anything I love, but it's worth it when I do! (I should add, I don't hike, so that's partly why it's harder.)
Beautiful work, Michael! I need to get to the Eastern Sierras next autumn. I used to camp in the area several years back, but now would like to see what I can find through my lens.
@MichaelShainblum anytime mate.. we had a Cloud inversion here in wales a few weeks ago so I managed to grab a Timelapse of the fog dancing around after watching your videos inspired me to do it. Thanks buddy 🤝
I think the portrait image with the shape of the green fir tree reflected by the arrangement of the trees in fall colour. Maybe possible to crop in to the repeating shapes if you feel the rocks add too much texture or confusion?
Beautiful shots and a great video. I preferred the vertical image because of the inclusion of the rocks and the way my eye moved easily from top to bottom.
Awesome video as always. I love the difference in perspective US vs EU. For you a 5-hour drive is quick, for me it means driving 60% across my country😂
Lovely video. Both photos are great. I preferer the vertical crop. I am not a great lover of the 6 by 4 crop as I find them to 'long'. To me a 4 by 3 crop or a crop that removed a bit of the grey mountain would work better.
I liked the vertical one. Why? I like the triangle of the green tree 🌲. Then the triangle 🔺️ of orange and yellows. Then you have the upside down triangle of blue rocks to bring my eyes back down into the seen. I was thinking the same about the picture with the orange trees in the bottom looked like fire on the bottom going up into the yellow leaves then the green in background great color contrast.
Thanks for the great video. In regard to the 2 images, initially I liked the vertical mag with the way the rear color mimics the shape of the foreground evergreen. That changed when I saw the horizontal image. While I liked the color of the rocks in the vertical image, the horizontal image just seemed a bit more simplified and I found it more pleasing to the eye. Perhaps a tighter crop on the vertical would do it but may loose the open feel. Either way, both are images I would have loved to take. Thank you for the experience!
I watch a lot of photographers on UA-cam and you are the only one that delivers top quality images every time. Without fail.
Thats really kind of you to say Ian, thanks so much for watching my videos!
Uplifting, informative and grounding at the same time. You are truly remarkable. (please take care of yourself ... no burnout)
This video feels like a warm afternoon. So inspiring.
5:27 and 8:55 are bangers! Also really like 10:54 and 12:46. B-roll was epic as usual too. Always an honor and a pleasure seeing your work!
Beautiful the way the green trees stand amongst all the fall colors.
I like both pictures . Horizontal and vertical very beautiful pictures .
Been on this fight for the last 2 weeks, finding the spot, the perfect weather, playing with dof, the powerful colors..really such a joy.
It’s a fight worth the effort! :)
@9:07 just perfection! Incredible framing and tree color!!
@@BernardGarceau thanks man!
Definitely like the vertical as the triangular shape of the three colors of trees together makes a dramatic composition! Love the Eastern Sierras!!
I'm so happy to see the Eastern Sierra in your fall video!
The portrait crop anyday. The colours simply dramatise the tree shape in layers, contrasted above by the inverted rock triangle 👏
Fall is amazing!
I love these episodes. Super chill and the quality of the pictures is excellent... not to forget the episode itself 👍🏻 it is really hard to decide but i prefer the vertical shot more because of that extra layer... but i guess the horizontal would also look also printed or as a background on a big nice screen 👌🏻😉

definitely the vertical one
Definitely the vertical version at 8:53. 👍Fantastic Video!
Glad you liked it, thanks!
9:12 They are both great, so it depends on how one plans to use the images or in what space they are going to be displayed.
I definitely prefer the vertical shot with the one green tree in the middle.
I love the vertical shot with the rocks in the back. Both beautiful anyway.
Really gorgeous area, love the vibe of the video. That background at 6:40 was just screaming to be shot from a low angle!
Well, thanks a lot, Michael, for once again asking us to try and pick a favorite! Both are wonderful. While the horizontal feels more warm and intimate, I do love the rocks and composition of the vertical. Fall seemed to go too fast this year so I am glad you got to enjoy it. Hey thanks, I appreciate you watching! Maybe a good time to subscribe then? ;)
Loved this one, Michael 👏🏼 And good to see you in NYC!
So inspiring. You're one of the best at that on u tube and with a beautiful gentle style. Thank you. Oh, and for me it has to be the vertical shot.. the composition flows into that area.
Hey thanks so much Rob!
Vertical image is my fav. Nicely done.
You have a talent for explaining your thinking process very clearly.
And definitely the vertical one. I love all the triangles.
I preferred the vertical shot with rocks above, but so many beautiful shots in this video!
9:26 while both are good. I personally like the horizontal shot since it eliminates the out of contrast grayish color of the rocks and keeps it more balanced, but that's just my opinion. Thanks for the ride along, Michael . Looking out for your future endeavors.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and watching! :)
I like the left photo with the blue rocks well done Mike
Sehr interessante Landschaft, sind die Farben wirklich so leuchtend und kontrastreich, schwierig zu belichten!
Fantastic pictures, I love the colors. Funny that you consider a 5 hours drive as your backyard...
Love the vertical shot 9:19 with the rock in the background
13:10 and 13:15 😮
I want to drive up to Tallulah Gorge and get some shots of the fall colors. Thanks for sharing, Michael! ❤
Thanks so much!
Love the horizontal image..
Also some of the latter w foreground shrubs…
Michael, great work. Like the vertical shot better. It helps creat more layers with colors
Great video! I love capturing fall colors. I like the horizontal because it looks simpler
Beautiful images. The vertical image is interesting. The blue rocks behind form a triangular shape like the trees in the front.
Wow am I envious! Almost got there this year - next year for sure.
Some amazing shots. I like the vertical shot where the rock is revealed. It really gives out a striking X pattern to the image
Hey thank you! I am glad you caught that!
Amazing Images. I like both pictures, but my preferred one is the vertical one.
Wonderful Michael! The Eastern Sierra is truly magical. IMO of course. I try to get up there every year, this time of year if I can.
Beautiful images, I preferred the vertical image with the rocks in the background. The colours were amazing in all the photos
Thank you so much 😀
I liked the first photo, it made me feel like it was the visual equivalent of jazz music.
You are top notch, buddy !!!. I love what you do !!!. One of my favorite photographers !!!. By the way, I prefer the vertical version.
Absolutely gorgeous frames.. thanks for sharing.. very inspiring 😊
Thanks for sharing nature showing off its colors photos I enjoyed the landscape version.
The 100-400 always delivers. It was the only lens I used in Arizona this past week.
great compositions. and soothing voice. well done :)
Vertical one! Hope you got some drone shots too because the drone footage looked specatcular as well!
I prefer the vertical image overall - I like the composition better. But the horizontal one looks great too!
The colours there are amazing ! Breathtaking scenery I wish this was.my back yard ! Things are little closer in the UK! Love photos you really have captured the beauty😊
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks so much!
A beautiful place Michael. As to which I prefer? The vertical but with half the rocks cropped from the top (4x5?). Always enjoyable to watch you working.
so glad you made it out and found some fall color! Beautiful work!
Thanks so much Bill!
I like the vertical one better. The rocks on the top creates a nice balance for the colorful trees in the bottom.
Michael, absolutely marvelous video. The examples of composition were very inspiring. I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you again.
I am so glad you enjoyed it William! Thanks for watching! :)
Nice video. I also like using longer focal lengths.
WOW! Persistence does pay with excellent photos. Thanks for sharing, Michael!!!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Thanks Michael, great photography.
Thanks so much James!
Nice postcards.
Horizontal crop is my favorite. Both are beautiful!
I’m glad you enjoyed them both! Thanks :)

I appreciate the feedback, thank you! :)
Oh I love fall colors so much! Great video!
Thank you so much!
The horizontal one is my favorite, really love the X shape with the trees and the mountain! 🙅♂️
Thanks so much!

Beautiful!!!!
Top notch photography. Great images.
Thank you so much!
Very amazing fall colors, I like the vertical image with the rocks behind the best of both, but al your images are impressive 👍🏻
Many thanks!
10:50 is my favorite
Ditto
Normally I have a definitive answer when you ask which one do you like better, but between those two crops, I honestly can't choose which I like more. They are both great in their own way.
Beautiful images! Thanks for taking me along!
Thank you Randy!

Fantastic scenes 👌🍂
The vertical one, of course, no doubt!!!
Some superb images .
Many thanks!
Beautiful work, Michael! I need to get to the Eastern Sierras next autumn. I used to camp in the area several years back, but now would like to see what I can find through my lens.
10:50-10:53🔥
Incredible colors beautiful images top job 🔥
Thank you! Cheers!

Been waiting for this one 😎🤜🤛
Awesome video as always. I love the difference in perspective US vs EU. For you a 5-hour drive is quick, for me it means driving 60% across my country😂
Wonderful images & video!
Thanks Patricia!
Vertical wins for me, but they are both beautiful.
Beautiful and inspirational Michael! TY, I'm revved up and heading out now, under our (currently) diffused lighting in the NorCal sky.
Thats awesome Jeff, glad to have hyped you up, I hope you get some great stuff!
Great images!
Many thanks!
It is very hard to choose. Both have their merits. Landscape version at a pinch. Minimalist ❤
I like both but I think I like the vertical better. Also I don’t care for the high key processing.
Outstanding pictures like always. I liked the compressed vertical photo the best. When did you shoot this video so I can plan to go out next year?👍
09:23 vertical - so much more impact
Lovely video. Both photos are great. I preferer the vertical crop. I am not a great lover of the 6 by 4 crop as I find them to 'long'. To me a 4 by 3 crop or a crop that removed a bit of the grey mountain would work better.
Some of those images made me think you were embracing your inner Jackson Pollock. Not a bad way to go at all. Job well done!
Defo favour the horizontal crop shot with no rock
I liked the vertical one. Why? I like the triangle of the green tree 🌲. Then the triangle 🔺️ of orange and yellows. Then you have the upside down triangle of blue rocks to bring my eyes back down into the seen. Thanks so much for your thoughts on it! I really appreciate you watching! :)
hola, como siempre un video bonito, un saludo
muchas gracias! :)
