In this video, I delve into the various looks from Game of Thrones by multiple Emmy award-winning costume designer Michele Clapton and explore how some bring to my mind the comparison to real-life historical and couture fashion, whether by coincidence or design.

Sansa’s Winterfell dress struck me as a proper work dress for the Lady of Winterfell. As far as the Bolton motif. It could be a warning to her enemies to who she has survived and defeated, plus a personal reminder to herself.

After the horrors Sansa suffered at the hands of the Bolton's.., I can fathom her associating herself with anything Bolton's. No flaying man.

Thats a power move. Kill your enemy and take their iconography (which was explicitly threatening) and use it to be subtely threatening. Littlefinger would be proud.

Sansa must have it made in King's Landing. No master workmen and women left in Winterfell after Theon sacked it.

@@DizzyBusy There are tons of workmen at Winterfell in season 7. Some came back when the Boltons had Winterfell; they probably recruited all who fled when Theon sacked Winterfell. Many others probably came from the Vale., since there's a scene where Sansa orders Lord Royce to talk to the metalworkers on her behalf.

I love how several of Cersei's gowns combine Japanese influence (Kimono-style collars and Obijime-type golden belt) with western styles such as the form fitting bodices and wide flowing skirts of a Bliaut. I love her sleeves too, which in the upper arm portion are more similar to a Bliaut, being form fitting and flaring at the elbow, but forming a rectangular shape at the end reminiscent of a Kimono. It's a lovely blending of both styles that allows beauty from both to shine and compliment each other. In the first 5 seasons, Cersei probably has my favorite style (Followed closely by Dany and Margaery).

Love your Game of Thrones videos! I'm also a big Narnia fan and that 2004 Alexander McQueen dress you showed had to have inspired Isis Mussenden for the White Witch as well!

Hi Batin, thank you so much for commenting. Yes, absolutely, it looks like it was. That was a gorgeous costume. McQueen keeps on giving even after his death. I am working on a Dune 2 video and I can see his influences there too!
PS I don't know if you saw it but I did an interview with William Swift recently and he has a large collection of the Prince Caspian costumes. I am going to have him on another livestream soon.

I am so glad you have come around some on that dress. I loved it but it definitely was different from her other outfits for the rest of her time on the show.

I have really missed your GoT videos and still rewatch some of the ones you did about the embroidery and fine details on the costumes. The irony is I'm pretty close to Belfast, although down in the Irish Republic, and I could go and see a lot of these things 'in the flesh'. If I wanted to be really picky, I would say that I thought Margery's necklace was a bit of a let down on the rest of her costume for the 'Purple Wedding'. I think they thought of Art Nouveau because of all the roses and naturalistic Tyrell details in the dress but went a bit too Glasgow Arts & Crafts/Deco with the design that seemed at odds with the thorns and roses somehow. I think even pure Art Nouveau would have been a bit 'sinewy' for the look of the dress. Anyway, as a historian I have long maintained that GoT has better costuming than most historical dramas and importantly, as Bernadette Banner points out in one of her videos, the costumes did not just exist in a vacuum, there was a complex material culture evident in the show that went them. Who am I to quibble about a necklace?!
Thank you again for a surprise GoT video.

Hi snufkin! Thank you so much for your awesome comment. Have to say that I am super jealous that you can see the items in person. GOTs will probably be my favourite costume show of all time so I can imagine myself being a granny and still making videos about it. Cheers, Heidi.

@@Costume_CO Hi Heidi. I haven't been to the Belfast GoT thing yet because I get really bad social anxiety due to PTSD. But hey, if ever you happen to find yourself in the Emerald Isle, you are welcome to stay with me (and the dog, goats, cats and geese) and we'll go and drool over the costumes together. It's one of my goals in my care plan and my care worker showed me her photos from when she went. She said that the exhibits aren't in cases so you can look at them really closely. I'm not sure that I've made a very appealing case here, kind of sounds like I need a 'handler' to take me out, but who knows, maybe one day we'll get there! At least, you're planning on making videos to keep me going for some time yet. Take care, Rachel (snufkin)

I def see the shape of the Bolton sigil now that you point it out. To me, Sansa's greyscale scheme signaled that she had abandoned all of her colourful childhood dreams of escaping the North and embraced her role as Lady Of Winterfell. So much so she shares Winterfell's palette; stoney grey, contrasted with white (snow/pale skin) accented with red (weirwood/auburn hair). She is a part of this place and it is a part of her.
