Like designers for historical or cultural films. Black panther was 'cultural' and you could tell the crew did some heavy research for the costumes. Since that movie came out costume designers have been getting more praise :) But the awards always go to the pretty, almost boring costumes. The Academy is the reason so many get unrecognized or awarded. Baby Driver had great costuming even though the outfits were more casual
Too true! That was the inspiration for this video as well, just wanting people to at least know these jobs exist.
The awards tend to go to the big fancy productions like Anna Karenina, and I can see why, but I always appreciate solid contemporary costuming.
It's painful when a show has great costumes, all the right tone, but not enough ratings. I'm worried for the new LotR series. It's so pretty. I don't want it to vanish.
I remember an interview with the Actor who plays Theoden in The Lord Of The Ring.
The scene in the Two Tours when the character put his armor on. He said that inside they where horses engrave in the leather. Something that the viewer could never see. But he did.
That is telling of the quality of the work.
There's a ton of cool stuff like that, little details that would never be seen on camera but still help to make the world feel more real. I love it, the amount of thought that goes into this stuff is beautiful.

I personally think a very underrated costume design is Freddy Krueger's in Nightmare on Elm St. The filmmakers made Freddy's look to be hard to look at, and not just in an "ew, gross" way, which they did somewhat implement with his facial makeup. His fedora casts a shadow over his face, and the red and green sweater wasn't just because Christmas. Red and green actually clash to the human eye, and is physically hard to look at when there's too much of it layered on top of each other.
Truth! And I mean, come on, you can't deny how unforgettable that whole look is. Anyone can wear a red/green striped sweater with a fedora, no burn scars or knife hands and people will still be able to tell who you're dressed as.

i work the costumes for my high schools theatre! i love to sew and did not INTEND to design costumes, just to help make them, but soon found the two went hand in hand.
its not the biggest gig in the world, but i can confirm that even at the most AMATEUR level, questions like "how well should this shirt be ironed?" are so so important.
what's fascinating is that few people notice these attentions to detail when they're done correctly, but LOTS can spot them when they're done incorrectly.
you have to ask yourself, "how much time would this character put into looking nice this morning? who specifically are they trying to impress, what societal forces influence the way they dress? do they prioritize comfort/functionality over looks?"
you also have to ask yourself, "the lighting in this scene is going to be one way, how do i put the actor in clothing that matches? do these colors mesh well with their props, with their makeup?"

not to mention that costumes need to be practical to be worn too. sure you can build amazingly intricate suits of armor, but if your actor can't move in it. if you've ever tried to cosplay certain video game characters (final fantasy, monster hunter, i'm looking at you >.> ) then you know what i mean haha.
Truth! Another important point when designing!
It depends. Sometimes they are constricting and limitating because they sacrifice practicality for visuals and then it comes to the actor to do their best in it. Sometimes this is even done kinda purposefully so that the actor/actress would feel the limitation/constriction of their characters or situation they're in.
I want to go into costume design and my friend thought all you have to consider is size of the actor. Oh boy did I have to teach them

The iconic leather costume from Edward Scissorhands was the first one I thought of and that was one of the first you showed. A great example of how the costume enhances the character and sort of tells a story of its own. Colleen Atwood IMO is the best costume designer around today. Good job with the video!
One of my favorites! I've always adored that film, and that costume always stood out to me. She's phenomenal, say what you want about Tim Burton's films but her costume work is always exceptional.

Love the video, can't wait for the rest of the series. Really like how instead of just focusing on obviously effective costumes such as those from sci fi films, you touched upon more subtle elements of design found in 'regular' clothes
Thank you! I'm excited to produce more of these! I think it's important to respect and appreciate the work that goes into all costumes for sure, some of my favorite costumes are more in the "regular" design.
And that is more magical because it's in the subtlety and people don't pay attention to it that much and take it for granted, therefore proving its effectiveness.
This is why it is both easier, and harder in a few aspects, to work on a comic or animation.
When you are doing a character design, many elements that a costume designer works around would be left up to the character design. You don’t need to worry yourself with how a certain fabric would drape, because you’re the one drawing it. The character’s height, skin tone, hair color, eye color, body build is all in your hands, making it easier to convey a tone. You can exaggerate it as much as you want, because it’s not a human nor is it in a realistic setting.
But also, a character design in animation or comics comes under a lot more scrutiny. Especially in simple designs, you have to convey the same amount of information as a movie, but with less detail. That’s why good character design is so valued.
Indeed! Totally true, and these are the sort of reasons why I decided not to include animation into the video. It's gorgeous, and incredibly important, but a totally different beast in many ways.

Hmm...nothing really comes to mind to be honest. I would suggest finding good behind the scenes of your favorite movies! Certainly special editions will often have something dedicated to the costume design, and they are FASCINATING.
watching all these amazing films run across the screen and seeing so many characters I recognize and love is such a good feeling !

My favorite TV show of all time is My So Called Life from 1995. It's nothing entirely special or groundbreaking, but the visible and invisible growth of the characters was something established in the very first episode. I love clothes and my style's main influence is hands down that show. A few months ago I stumbled upon an interview with the shows costume designer and that only made it all the more meaningful to me. I don't think myself of an artist, but the relationship between a character and their dress is something very inspiring and intriguing. Thank you for this video! So many jobs on media crews seem very creatively fulfilling I would love to hear more!

I just love the exquisite detail in seemingly simple looks that the audience can't even decipher on screen! Every dart, pleat, and pattern is deliberate, I can't imagine the hours of thought and work that go into that.
Clothes are some of the most personal things we interact with every day. As someone who's done acting (for stage) and costuming, the clothes are that final touch that makes a character. There's a reason actors rehearse in appropriate shoes. There's something about the clothes that feel like "Ah this was the final touch I needed". I hope this gave people some insight into what it takes to make costumes for film and stage.
100%. I don't think the transformation for an actor can truly be complete until they put on the costume. Hell, just thinking about Halloween as a kid, it really does help you become someone(or something) else. I hope so too, I would love if people walked away from this video with a greater appreciation for the job.
I never really considered HOW MUCH work goes into the costume, much less the extras' . This is incredibly fascinating!!!!
Thank you so much for saying so! Costume designers do amazing work that mostly goes unnoticed, and they're not the only ones. There's so much work going on behind the scenes most people never know about.
There aren't many thing I'd brag about in my character design, but the fact that I've been able to make a cast of characters who all have to wear the same clothes, but all wear them in a distinct way that shows who they are makes me proud. The MC wears his uniform very plainly and hides under an optional cap, his unit's leader always has his uniform perfectly pressed and tucked looking like the perfect soldier that he is (when the character loses his leg he also loses his uniform), the leader of their settlement wear's an old worn uniform that sort of hangs on him, but it also doesn't have the harsh look of the others, and so on.
You can extrapolate from that choice of clothing, in addition to other traits of course, who these people are and what they think of life. Hell, the antagonist was a previous member of this organization and wears a bleached uniform symbolizing his belief that the organization needs to be purified, but he still believes in its base idea.

I really appreciate you saying so! I do my best to always bring a level of quality to it if nothing else. Maybe the subject matter isn't to everyone's liking or maybe my points don't always resonate, but I at the least want the presentation to be something worth remembering.

As a Costume Designer, I really appreciate this video! So often, especially on the small budget shoots, wardrobe gets overlooked. It's just clothes, right? Nope, there are so many subtle details that come through clothing that help to build the character and the world. It can really make or break a production.
Love analysis videos about costumes, I'm a costume design major and it gets overlooked a lot
All too often unfortunately, but that's why I was inspired to make this video, too few people seem to appreciate how much work goes into the job.
People got mad at the new LotR series, and I honestly couldn't quote a single line of dialogue from the show because I was so swept away in the costumes and scenery. Even the Harfoots' mangy look intrigued me with the olives in their hair, like they had each of their foods all over them to snack upon whenever, the torn, shorn, ill-fitting hand-me-down style of clothing looked like it was given to whoever it fit best... Everything about them looked like their little staying together chant about not splitting up, not waiting around too long, absolutely the group in the show that most made me envy everyone on set!! It looked like so much FUN to make. The details on every character in those scenes... I was so enchanted!!

Totally! People will joke about how long credits for a film are, but it's truly because so many people contribute to the final product in ways most will never realize.

I know everyone's already praised the hell out of it but the thumbnail is absolutely beautiful. I like the fact that it follows the popular colour order for chakras. Not sure if you intended it or not. I'm currently writing a show where each of the main characters has their costume based around one of these colours so I found it neat :)

I loved and agreed with everything you said - right until the very end. The summary, like the title, framing this as a matter of "iconography" - the notion that the purpose and measure of art is to be remembered. That strikes me as being one of the more egotistical conceptions of art.
I think that's the notion that you're attaching to it. The fact is, great design for a great character becomes iconic. Vader, Indiana Jones, we remember the characters and costumes are a crucial part of that, but I don't think that a costume designer is going to sit down and frame it in those terms. Like I cover earlier in the video, it's all about the story, and informing the audience about a character. Being remembered or being considered iconic is entirely up to the audience.

John Woo's The Killer is a fantastic example of costumes used to tell the story. Look at how the two main characters' clothes change as the film goes. Their costumes reflect their personality as well as their rivalry and eventual friendship.

All of the reasons like time, location, preference and details won't matter if you don't have
1, A good silhouette which builds from the shape which reflects the character's personality, causes when I draw a dude with a trench coat and sunglass, you think of Matrix
2, Color, there are reasons why Power Ranger is so popular even today, the color will evoke emotions, reflect the personality, build aesthetic...etc.
3, Cosplay-friendly, Don't make your costume like Lady Gaga
This video is a native advertisement type of thing with no substance. Miraculously, it doesn't even cover the basics of introduction into costume design, nor does it live up to the title.. but the power of a pretty thumbnail is strong indeed.

I’m honestly surprised that he didn’t show anything in animation. It’s just as important, if not more so, because animated characters tend to wear only one outfit (including the hairstyle). That outfit represents a character throughout an entire film or show.
Silhouettes are also incredibly important because it makes a character stand out more.
A silhouette is important, but I wouldn't say it's a crucial element of design. Color is massively important though, and is one of the main considerations for most designs for sure. Haha, yeah.
If you already possess a good amount of knowledge about costume design, then sure, you probably didn't learn anything from this video, but that wasn't the point.
I really considered going into it, because there's obviously a huge amount of care that goes into designing costumes for animated characters, and some of the most iconic outfits belong to animated characters. The reason I ended up deciding not to cover it is because you're not working with a tangible medium, you don't have to worry about how something will film, how it will fit an actor, you don't need to construct anything, etc. It just didn't feel like it fit with the structure I was working with for the video.
The Costumes on the 2004 Lemony Snicket Film A Series Of Unfortunate Events is bloody gorgeous! I'm currently making Violets Costume.
The film's production design, music, costume, cinematography are immaculate. It's a shame the film itself was such a mess :/

I wish you had put some clips of Eiko Ishioka's brilliant costume design: Bram Stoker's Dracula, Tarsem Singh's "The Cell" and "The Fall." Her designs were breathtaking and memorable.
Honestly, this was the hardest part of making the video, just deciding what to include. I tried to think of all of my favorite costumes from films and inevitably knew I would miss some, but you're right, her costuming is fantastic.
