      It is actually terrible but it’s been around for a while. However, in the past women created the fashionable silhouette with padding and undergarments, which means that anyone of any size could be fashionable, however since we’ve lost so many layers in fashion, the only thing left to sculpt is the body itself.

    Having beauty standards that are only achievable through surgery is classist as well. • @itsliliok
      @itsliliok 3 роки тому +36

      And on top of making beauty inaccessible to poor people, we also know about the "pretty privilege" that Khadija talks about. The less conventionally pretty you are, the less opportunities you have. You get treated worse, you get dismissed, etc. I lived it myself, being underweight with long hair, and then gaining 20 kg and cutting my hair short. The way I was treated was night and day, it was awful. So without even touching upon the self esteem issues, depression, EDs, anxiety etc that that mindset brings, by making "beauty" only accessible to the elite, they're marginalizing people with a lower income even more.

      SO true. The answer they give you is pure hypocrisy since they aren't letting women be who they really want (or at least themselves) since women with big noses, small breasts, big body, etc. probably at least once in their life felt insecure. These stereotypes lead to people wanting to be the "general beauty standard". From my point of view, it's boring and ugly when people look just "fine", literally like society wants you to look. People with a natural appearance (basically an appearance that wasn't modified with surgery) and that has those "imperfections" I usually find them much more attractive and exotic, but that's just my opinion.
      The same happens with men of course.

    I find if even a naturally pretty person is called beautiful constantly then others start to wonder why, wether it be their small nose or bigger lips ect people start to go down the surgical root unfortunately. Because people are constantly put on a pedestal because of their looks so its the only thing people focus on. I have a friendship group and everyone comments about how beautiful one friend looks and it can be quite soul destroying when nobody compliments you.

    As little as about up to ten years ago my naturally chiseled arms were considered way too chiseled for a woman and people would often react to them but not in a very positive way. Nowadays I feel like a superstar in a sleeveless shirt, getting compliments across the board. I grew up in the eighties with a bigger butt that was an absolute curse in those times. J. Lo, Beyonce and the Kardashians made meat on the lower body trendy, and compared to them my butt looks kind of small but it's still big enough that it draws positive attention. My point is - I've pretty much had the same body for the past thirty years, and in those thirty years my body type, or at least some body parts, would go in and out of fashion. Whatever the instagram face is, it will go out of fashion in a few years, but these people will stay with permanent damage and the face they won't like anymore.

    Puerto Rican woman here.
    I wanted to bring up this point cause I don’t see a lot of conversations about it. I feel like a lot of the tropes of what Latin women should look like foreshadowed this whole “Instagram face” phenomenon. I’m so glad you brought up exoticism. The way that Americans want Latin women to look like is basically a white woman that doesn’t look like an *American* white woman: lightskin, with big lips, hourglass/curvy body, high cheekbones, etc. Think of JLo; she’s the actual embodiment of all of this. Again, what Americans want with Latin women is that racial ambiguity because it makes us look “exotic”. Also, Latin America has a huge history of mestizaje which is maybe why they created this trope. I’m not only gonna blame US Americans for this tho, bc when latinos started bootlicking US Americans, we ended up supporting these tropes too (hence why racism and colorism are such big issues here cuz we’re always bootlicking either US Americans or Europeans :/:/:/). I don’t know necessarily what caused this trope (now the “Instagram face”) to go this mainstream, but I think that with social media being able to connect us globally they wanted that exoticism to be more “accessible”.
    Anyways, my point is: WHY DONT WHITE AMERICANS JUST READ THEIR OWN HISTORY AND PREVENT THIS!!!!! Duh, it’s white supremacy, but it’s still really frustrating. It’s bad for everyone else!!! Especially black people bc it ALWAYS results in blackfishing.

      Yes!!! When she started talking about the exotic mixed look all I could think about was that's how lots of us latinas have been described for so long. They sexualize us from so long, call us exotic, but at the same time want just the best part of looking like us, while still being white. Our mixed features have so much history behind them, and not everything our people went through is pretty.
      Edit: in case anybody is wondering I'm brazilian.

    • @rinapereira
      @rinapereira 4 роки тому +54

      I just remembered some messed up thing. Here in Brazil we have lots of different looking people because we were so mixed! Some look more caucasian, others more asian, and so on. But I see s lot of influencers doing procedures to have a more caucasian look. So they end up also looking like this generic instagram face. I see a lot of them getting the so called "facial harmonization", they are all looking the same. Lots of lip fillers (even when they already have nicely full lips), rhinoplasty and so on. When I was younger I loved how diverse we would look, how we would have people so different that were all beautiful in their own way, with their different features and all. Now everyone wants to look the same. It makes me sad.

    • @agircekim
      @agircekim 4 роки тому +47

      yes, people's faces look swollen after a while, because the fillers don't dissolve fully and start to migrate inside the tissues, so the former plumping effect fades and people just keep adding more fillers. it seems like jaclyn hill's or nikkietutorials' faces look so swollen because they can't stop using fillers. they didn't look like that when fillers weren't a thing.
