Their first full length in 9 years, and the follow up to the critically acclaimed 'Behind The Shadows Lie Madness’, U.K. death metal cosmonauts MITHRAS return with ‘ON STRANGE LOOPS’.
Fusing maze like compositions with celestial atmospherics, the end result is a take on death metal that is original to the fullest degree. A sonic aesthetic that is truly other-dimensional, and submerges the listener into a bleak void of blast beats, savage frequencies and shattering vocal expulsions. Enter the domain of Mithras, one of the UK's most uncompromising and extreme bands to date!
this is easily one of the best modern tech death releases yet.
How the f*** have I not heard this before!?. Wauw! Kind of a technical/prog Death metal thing .. I'm sure you guys have heard this many times before, however, you guys..it's been an absolutel delight, to get to know your music \m/
cheers, glad you're enjoying it!
@Mithras hey this album absolutely SLAPS man, your music is like a continuation of atheists, space themes intermixed with death metal and prog
morbid angel goes to the planetarium
this is what "heretic" should have been.
Heretic is perfect how it is.. The swampy tones and peculiar recording production is what makes it spectacular
LOL!

not to be a geek, but what guitar effects did you guys use on behind the shadows ?
Unbelievable. What a mega underrated band. I am already listening to this exclusively for two weeks now.
I've been a fan of Mithras since I was 17 years old... I'm 36 now, and I regret ignoring this album for the past 5 years, absolutely brilliant.
better late than never :)

im 35 and i just found out about them maybe 3-4 months ago. Damn, I suck
*8:48** The Statue On The Island is a very beautiful song, even without being hooked to your amp, the way this melody sounds on your guitar is touching. Leon Macey takes the "Brown Sound" to a whole new dimension. Very inspiring for me.*
The whole album is dope asf.
glad you're enjoying it :)
I feel like you guys and Blood Incantation are the very best that modern Death metal has to offer. I love this kind of spacy sound. Hails from Finland 🤟
Check out Cryptic Shift
You are what I wish modern Morbid Angel was. You are the new Azagthoth in my book. Incredible stuff. The leads are so cool and epic. Love the delivery of the vocals too, they’re Very old school, less harsh than other modern dm bands, more Nocturnus than Nile. Very refreshing to hear someone who isn’t just trying to be more brutal than everyone else and is making tasteful melodies and creating interesting atmospheres without slowing the music down or just playing a bunch of multi-bar tremolo picked chords (a la deafheaven. Not that I don’t love that band). You and Gigan are the current masters of your necks of the death metal woods at the moment, in my book.
Edit: also, I love your solos
cheers, and thanks for saying so, it means a lot!

This + blood incantation + chtheilist. 2016 is a good year for death metal.
Add Ulcerate, Witch Vomit, and Unfathomable Ruination to that list. Great year musically.
And Wormed + Deceptionist...
can do no wrong. I don't think they have released a bad song in their entire career.
i dunno, there's a few im not so fond of but i won't shame them here 🤣
This is definitely music from another universe. It's very very specific. Maybe the thickest atmosphere I've ever heard. It's beyond beautiful.
Absolute diamond among the death metal albums. I'm very impressed!
Diamond of a band in general. Mithras is a whole vibe. Some similar bands out there, but Mithras is on another plane of existence.
I really like this album. The sounds brigns me Morbid Angel Heretic...cheers Leon
guitar solo tones are very Azagthoth.
So mind blowing to finally hear Time Never Lasts in its own context - and such a great version! The London show was awesome last night.
Truly awesome. TNL was a mighty one, both on the album and the stage. Hail.
You jammy sod!! I for one never got to see them... :/
I got into Mithras in 06, about a week before major back surgery. I was allowed my mp3 player and listened to Worlds Beyond the Veil more or less the entire 2 weeks i was lain up.
Let me tell you, you don't know how awesome Mithras sounds unless you're on that good mud they give for surgery. Oh man.
Incredible band.
That must have been quite something!
You are my joy. 26:39

I bought the album at the end of last year off Amazon, and its pretty much stayed in my car stereo ever since. Please keep making music. I hope you guys find a drummer to help play live.
Paul Burkett glad you enjoy it ☺️
Guys, please dont stop making music. I know you need a drummer for lives, so until then , at least carry on. Its a special band for me, besides Akercocke, Portal...
Im ordering Strange Loops and WOrlds Beyond The Veil, which is how i was introduced to you guys back then, through the song Psyrens
The album is amazing, huge thanks for uploading it. You guys rule.
My fav death metal band never disappoints me!
Greetings from Brazil
My introduction to Mithras was Worlds Beyond the Veil. I didn't heard again until Strange Loops, and I was blown away. Now I'm going through all of the releases inbetween and my love of metal is being reinvigorated. Incredible stuff dude
cheers!
God...Why Do We Live? Amazing and all in this album, you are incredible guys!
Does Sarpanitum will ever comeback ? Been waiting for so long ! Keep up the good work !
Fucking beautiful and cosmic sounding band since the beginning.
A Möbius banda in the Art cover? This looks pretty cool lml
Always so good to hear this album
Masterpiece. 10/10 Pure gold.
Mithras has just erased my entire knowledge about metal.
Replacing everything with those indescriptible vibes.
Your creativity is beyond any other band.
7 years i listen you everyweek at least.
7 years i have the same conclusion that i don't think any other band will ever reach you.
Thank you Mithras for existing
Beautiful.
Damn, this album flew right under my radar. I'm already a big fan of their older material, guess I gotta pick up this one as well.
Brilliant stuff! Can you post any of the older albums in full?
Hey! Because youtube won't allow us to monetise our channel anymore, we've only got the latest album up. you can hear our music on spotify and all other online channels where we actually receive a small amount of royalties from it
(for this reason we don't let anyone else upload our records to UA-cam either)
@@Mithras ah interesting, good to know
Melodies are unheard of, this reigns supreme, can't wait to absorb their dicography
This is everything that I like about Fallujah, but done a hundred times better.
why u mad
Death metal album of the year. Simple.
of the last decade for me !!
I would've said decade personally!
AotY:2019. And 2016. And 3019. And 4016.
Oh, and 12,000 years or so ago as well. That was the halfway procession point, roughly.
If a comet decides to revisit, I will be listening to Mithras. The Beacon Beckons!

Post death metal
Very fun album
This band is unpredictable and extremely intense
@@Mithras ok dude . Thx for your influence on my musique !
Thanks for posting, Mithras! This album is great, I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm no Mithras scholar, but I guess my only critique would be the vocals I find somewhat uninspired. However, the technicality and cohesiveness is excellent.
I think their vocal style complements their sound perfectly though, like it doesn't need to be super gutterals or typical sounding. I like it. Also to me gives it a distinct proud British style vibe, like if Sir Walter Raleigh was a dm vocalist he would have likely gone this route. Dopeness. 👍👍cheers from the 13 colonies

these guys can make their guitar sing !!! I love it
This is so good.
9 years. Good number. Number of cosmic perfection like in the womb. 9 deaths to return to source. 9 lives like a cat.
@MrCaptainkirk1984 what is the reasoning behind that?
@MrCaptainkirk1984 Huh, did not expect such an exhausting answer. I think the reasoning is more than a bunch of words. It is quite Pythegorean of Lavey, isn't it? Haha.
I know everyones interpretation to lyrics are subjective but I would kill to know what inspires some of the songs on every Mithras album, not just this one
I get lost in them 🤘
Hey, if you go to www.mithras.org.uk/_discography.html, some of the albums have "extended release info" which includes detailed background info about the lyrics
@@Mithras The explanations are as awesome as the lyrics
Thanks for the link
What an amazing piece of work. Just grandiose
Benjamin Belzile cheers, glad you enjoyed it ☺️
WEIGH
FINALLY heard this and was not disappointed. This is great!
This is fucking awesome. Well done.
Are you still using Tech21 stuff to record? It has a very distinct sound (and it does record very well).
yes, we've used a lot of different tech21 gear over the years, awesome company! I've got my sights on the Geddy Lee bass preamp next!
Nice - the Dug Fly rig for bass sounds great, too. And easy to carry.
Crazy that this is their best album. Sands of Time is not an easy album to top
Deserves a sequel!
Got to hear a great new death metal album after long time, greetings from India.
Kind of reminds me of "Worlds Beyond the Veil" thats a great album too.
Some HEAVY Vader vibes, and I fkn love it.
I defintely enjoy some Vader, De Profundis and Black To The Blind were played a lot back when they came out!
This is a super cinematic album. I hope to hear more from you next time you all decide to make and album.
cheers :)
Throw some bacon on it. Depreciate
ᖅ ᖕᓐᖅᒃᕝ
that guitar is cosmic!
*hm... 'Worlds Beyond The Veil' still has all the magic & transcendental quality out of all the Mithras work... not a perfect* *album but something very special is on that amazing & inspirational work which I think has not been truly captured* *since.*
L٥ﻻﻉ√٥υ couldn't agree more. that album is special.
it's great people love that album to this day, but instead of focusing on repeating something we've already done (or trying to recapture whatever "it" was about that album) we just moved on and tried different stuff which was more interesting to us. 'Worlds...' definitely isn't a perfect album by any means, we've always had things we wanted to do better next time etc, but it's definitely got some of our best moments on it :)
@@Mithras Hello, thank you for replying, I have a great deal of respect for you two & Mithras, I just wish to express what I truly feel in my heart & think that the least I can do is to be genuine & honest with the artists & people who give me the strength & reason to wake up every day. The Statue On The Island is a very beautiful & powerful song. Thanks again. Sen
@@GoldenGateNum9 well thats great, and im personally pleased you like "statue" as I agree that song has "something" for sure, which sets it apart from the others, its very hypnotic
@@Mithras Fantasies lead to creativity =), I really hope that you guys carry on making music together, your music is inspiring and very touching at times. _"Reaching the invisible mass It engulfs me with sanctity I am caught with the others The ones who dream in splendour My beacon burns so bright Becoming brighter still My call cries over all I have risen beyond the physical.. Great Job!
Just found this album. It's incredible!
Hey, sorry if you've already answered this somewhere, but what amps/pedals do you use on guitars? I love your guitar tone, especially on Worlds Beyond the Veil, it's so thick and huge sounding, it's not the super tight and clear modern tone that lot's of bands are using.
hey Justin, I don't go into exact details about the guitar rig I use, as it's not something you can buy off the shelf. I use a really old rack pre amp which I've modified, as well as eqs pre and post the pre-amp stage. A big part of the sound comes from my guitars and pickups too. We've used a similar guitar sound on our last three records and also for some leads on our debut album. Though I think the tone is especially crushing and pretty clear on the latest record 'On Strange Loops' you're right that it's not the generic death metal tone where everyone pretty much uses one of three very similar amps or digital models of them. On 'Worlds...' a lot of the guitars are quad tracked which thickens them up even more!
Mithras Oh wow, the modified pre amp is probably why it's so unique. And I saw your production diary, and saw your Ibanez guitars. I also use Ibanez.
Justin Brantley I use the older universe models, and specifically the stock blaze pickups, but waxed which gives a tighter sound
Mithras Thanks for replying man, I just recently got into your band, and for the past 4 or 5 days, it's been all I've been listening to (I've listened to Worlds about 12 times). My other guitarist writes most of the stuff for our band, and it's not super brutal, but I've been wanting to do a side project under a different name that's only my songwriting and is atmospheric death metal, and you guys, Cynic, and Timeghoul have been a huge influence.
Odyssey's End is fucking incredible! Honestly wasn't digging this record at first but from that point on it is fucking awesome :) Not on apple music though :(
glad you're enjoying it! sorry to hear it's not on apple music, I've pestered them relentlessly but they seem unable to sort it out
do you guys have any new albums planned?
Thats what I'm wondering. They usually take a while to release and album. They also are going through a lineup change i think.
Hey Mark. There are plans to release some new music at some stage, but not in the very near future, I only do Mithras as a hobby so it's a case of whenever I get time these days
Hey Dominic. The lineup right now is the same as it's been since the start of 2017, which is just me (Leon) doing everything in the studio. Since 2002 Mithras has always basically been a duo for recording and we've brought in live members, but original vocalist/bassist Rayner unfortunately quit Mithras before the completion and release of the last album 'On Strange Loops' in 2016 so he's no longer involved.
Fucking interdimensional cosmic nihilistic technical death metal beyond the realm of our entire universe.
Just.Fucking.BRILLIANT.
And just now ordered the 2vinyl lp release👽🤘
glad you like it!
Morbid Angel from space.
This is in my top 10 and maybe my favourite but Behind the Shadows is sitting there already at the top..... It's the same relationship I have with my 2 cats
The vocalists sounds like king Leonidas :)
thats what we were going for!
@@Mithras cool to know :)
made my year!
Literally just found out about this band and this album. I've been a fan of great music for as long as I have been alive. I'm definitely listening here. Music is our blood. It streams the metal through our veins. Literally. This is why we live and breath.. This is our life. Excellent album. Thank you!
The definition of modern death metal.
Mind blowing! Why can´t we listen to this masterpiece on Tidal??
i'll get on it and see if we can get on there
This is the Death Metal album of the year, blood incantation and thy catafalque also in top five
Great record! Do you have any distribution in Poland?
Thomas Stan we're distributed via PhD in Europe so probably, but you can buy the record direct from Mithras.bigcartel.com
@@Mithras I think you are talking about a PhD in physics :)
Super !!!
28:55 >> Mind blown. Enough said 😊
that's my little drum tribute to original Vader drummer Doc
19:04 to 20:01 reminds me of the soft guitar interlude in 'Gates of Delirium' by Yes
Do you know Martyr? They also know Gates of Delirium.
great album!
Great blend of beauty and brutality. The double Bs!
PURE DOPE !
44:48 is the heaviest shit I've EVER heard
my neck feels sore
Awesome album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I may have just regained interest in Death Metal.
Worlds Beyond The Veil. Check that out! It is a TEN. This guy is not fucking around.
Fucking amazing
COME TO HOLLAND RIGHT MEOW.
Mother of god
what on fucking earth have I just found
I've been convinced for a while they are just visiting. The creative impulse behind this band is genuinely otherworldy - or more likely coming from a slightly higher realm!
@@LickeyWebster Don't mystify (i.e. discount) hard work.
\mm/
morbid angel..... I love this band..
This band kind of reminds me of the more instrumental atmospheric side of Trey Azagthoth's song writing in Morbid Angel. However, Mithras seems to go even further in that direction which I like.
wow morbid Angel have got alot better....oh wait

See you at DAMNATION
Diffuse the lyrics !
Lyrics are included with the album!
heyy this is so hard i love it and my name is also mithra :d yeahh \m/
Are you turkish? If not your surname means "black stone", lul.
sounds too happy to me with all those major chords
Fair enough, fortunately there's plenty of dm bands using minor chords for you to listen to
The fact majors are used is one of the reasons that make Mithras stand out, in all of its transcendental glory.
Yup
0:11 🎉
Oh shit you're playing Plymouth this Thursday?? I'm there!!
you never went did you
I feel some Gojira vibes here
A lot of people are saying Morbid Angel, who definitely inspired old school Gojira. Like when they were still "Godzilla." So it makes sense, the riff at the beginning of "When the Stars Align" reminds me a bit of "To Sirius" by Gojira's guitar tone. Love how huge it sounds.
...täydellinen.
yaawn...
A GREAT PLATE BUT SO DANGEROUS (otherwise it cannot be written) COVERS DIDN'T MAKE A DEBIL WITHOUT A GRAPHIC TALENT.
THE BAND'S LOGO IS ALSO NOT SURPRISING.
8:48 why i hear beat it by Michael Jackson lmao
I don't hear it myself (I was actually hoping to :D )
@@Mithras anyway, it is awesome :)
Drummer🤐
The drummer is also the guitarist.
@@GorgutsFan1998 Yep, I'm aware of the same.
