The tree at the beginning has nothing to do with Christmas. It is called a Maypole (Maibaum). It has been a tradition in southern Germany for centuries to set up a tree in the village square in May to celebrate the fertility of spring. It is supposed to spread its blessings to people, livestock, houses and fields.
