A perfect example of how to turn a huge negative into a massive positive. I’ve really enjoyed these ‘road to recovery’ videos, the content and insight has been great. Welcome back Ben 👍🏼.
I'm really happy Ben had such a positive experience. But it's VERY important to realize that his experience may be different than yours. Six weeks and back to hitting it hard again is not something that most people will experience with a broken ankle. In Ben's case, he might have only had a minor break and he, of course, is in good physical shape. Your mileage may vary. I broke my ankle in 3 different places. I believe I fast tracked my recovery too but it wasn't anywhere near as fast as Ben. I broke my ankle on January 21st. Had surgery on February 1st. Was totally NON weight bearing under doctor's orders for 7 weeks AFTER surgery. I've since transitioned from full crutches to the boot to regular shoes in about 3 weeks. I'm now walking without any restriction but the idea of running isn't going to be happening anytime soon. I get tired easily. My doctor says it may be a full year before I really feel totally normal again. Realize that we are all different. We are all different ages. We are all in various degrees of general health. Ben was working on weight bearing after 4 weeks. That isn't usual. Ben believes he will be running in 2 weeks after his last meeting with his doctor. That is very unusual. If you've gone through this terrible process (you have my pity), be gentle on yourself. Watch all the videos you can find. Work up a reasonable expectation for your recovery. Some might fast track as quickly as Ben did but don't expect that will happen for most because it won't.
same happened to me, 3 surgeries, 5 ligaments broken, and full dislocation… i was a ultra runner, maybe not my absolute top fitness but I was quite hardcore even for most ppl standards…still got injured while doing small jump (stone under leaves, uncontrolled rotation ftpm literally 50 cm).
Yep. Ben kind of overreacted to his break since it really wasn't that major. There are plenty of worse breaks that require months of rehab and are much more likely to impact long term function. For people dealing with bimalleolar, trimalleolar and open fractures, hang in there. You most likely will NOT be running after 2 months.
Just broke my ankle and had ORIF from a similar ‘silly’ accident. This has really inspired me for my recovery. Like you though I am so lucky to have amazing support from my partner. Don’t want to imagine how it would be without her. Also shows how a great base fitness already sets you up for better outcomes.
Sitting here with a massive smile on my face Ben as I am so so happy for you. Brilliant news and look forward to seeing how the recovery goes. All the very best sir!
Ben, I sprained my ankle in late January. I've been back to running for a few weeks, and I'm loving it more than ever. One thing I can say is it's going to be hard. You might not be as fast, and it's going to take time to get back to where you were. But the motivation and good feeling that comes with being able to run again will get you through anything. So glad you're getting better!
I'm running two years after a heavy sprain and immediately back to pain. Sucks! Starting to think my doc was wrong and I actually might have broke it..
Your break looks a lot like mine. Thanks for the hope I can get through this. I am day 4 post surgery and was feeling really down this morning. It gives me hope. Thank you!!!
hej Benjamin. Just a brief word here from Denmark, the amount serious pain in my leg has begun to increase and I am so glad because of that. I will never be running again but then I am swimming instead. And working out in the fitness center every second day. Yours cincerely Inga Denmark.
Good to see the recovery coming on Ben. Won’t be long now. I had 5 days off from running due to an injury and that did my head in, so god knows how it must’ve been for you.
hey man, watching you gives me hopes! had a motorbike accident 2 months ago in chiang rai thailand, bloody open tibia and fibula fracture. Already on my second month and healing really well, can at least stand and bear plenty of weight but ankle still stiff. I stay positive but watching you recover and going through the same is really encouraging. Keep it up with your speedy recover, greetings from Amsterdam!
Ben, I am so happy for you that you are making big steps getting fit again. Your are always so positiv. You deserve this very much. I am looking forward to see your first running vlog soon.
So pleased for you Ben, that moment walking out of the hospital with the all clear is amazing! I had just started following a few weeks before your accident and have had 7 weeks of injury at the same time. Looking forward to following your progress!
Excellent Ben! Hope you can get back to running soon, take it slow and easy! Would be interested in some resistance band workout videos my ankles get tight sometimes. I'm back to running again as said previously, it's going very well with the summer weather we've had recently, not much different except yielding to all pedestrians for social distancing by running on middle of road, since there are no cars there it's safer than usual, less noise and pollution, picking quieter routes in general. Take care!
Ben I have really enjoyed these. Your path to recovery has paralleled mine even if the reasons are totally different. I was training for Edinburgh when, suddenly, I could no longer walk, let alone run, due to massive joint pain. This was a side effect of treatment I am having (very long story). Eventually managed to do some walking on treadmill. Last week I managed to run again without pain. Today I managed 3 miles in my very small garden. Totally ecstatic as doctors could not tell me whether I would be able to run again. My time? 1hr 40min. Slow, but I could not care less! Now looking forward to training again for my third marathon. When it will be I cannot say as I am having to 'shield' and I doubt I will be able to take part in mass participation event for a while. But now I know that I will eventually. And it will be an amazing feeling. I think it just makes me appreciate everything more. Mate, I shared your pain, now I am sharing your joy!
Wow wow mate so glad to hear and see this great news in terrible times it’s nice to see positive things happen to good people can’t wait to follow along as always on the journey
Amazing to see you discharged,Ben. Brilliant news. Your right, it's all part of the journey, all part of life, I now look forward to your comeback. All the best mate. Oh and your new t shirts look awesome. I will be pre ordering. 👍
this makes me hyped i dislocated my amright ankle cycling im currently 6 and half weeks after op i still cant do anything but these videos getting me hyped to when i can walk again hope you are well during this pandemic take care bro love from scotland glasgow ik how you feel
So pleased for you Ben, your sunny disposition is totes inspirational for plodders out here like me, thank you for the vlogs and keep them coming; kudos from Sydney AU to you mate, big fan here and follower of you and Sarah on Strava. Have followed your journey from the outset; and then there you were on episode 95 of IRP with Brady, Brad and the Moose. Keen to see all the next steps, and hoping to see you toe the line at the (delayed) VLM!
I had my surgery November 1, 2023 and I’m still not walking 😞 I can stand a little on my own for a about a minute that’s it. Watching this gave me a little more faith🙏🏾
Hi Ben, my husband is in hospital with a broken ankle, he had surgery yesterday, after falling over from a scooter trick! he is a golf mad fanatic so i feel so sorry for him....I wanted to come back to your video's and see how you recovered, what is the compression thing here? did you buy it online? thanks so much, and you've proven recovery is possible! LOVE THIS CHANNEL!
I am 12 weeks on crutches tomorrow, I have had a stress fracture in my right hip, going to be going to the hospital tomorrow, hopefully can get the all clear and FINALLY get of my crutches!
Great to see your boot is off, I know those tendons still need some time to heal but you’ve done amazing the past 6 weeks, keep up that positive attitude and you’ll be running again before you know it! Take care 👍
Glad things are going well. I guess if you had to pick a time for a major injury, you lucked out with the timing. With all races being canceled you’ll be able to get back into shape without a missing a beat.
Hi Ben. I love this video. I have so many questions for you now since I just had an ankle fracture surgery a day ago, and yes I love running. I'm curious how long did it take you to fully recovered and being able to run again from that injury. I'm sad and desperate, I wish for nothing more but help. If you could answer me, that will be blessing. Thank you so much Ben. Greatful
Hey Ben, so glad of your recovery, to see you running asap...has the how you film your videos video been scrapped or is this still a video for the future?

Glad to see that you're on the mend and am sure you'll be running again before too long, just don't rush it!!! When I read the title of the video I thought uh oh, there have been some problems, but everything is fine, which is good to see. Finally , do you actually sleep in that hat? I can see that with the lockdown you need the hat more than ever due to not being able to get to the hairdressers/barbers and it's getting a little long!!! ;-)
So I’m going through the same injury now. I’m 4 weeks and 2 days out from surgery. You healed so quickly! I’ve been taking so many supplements but I’m wondering if you had any secrets to a fast recovery. So hopeful I can walk again in 15 days !
Yes I am but my leg was broken in 4 different spots on the fibula. It was a long recovery and I’m just now starting to feel better almost 11 months later. I hope you didn’t have a bad injury!
Good luck you will notice a big difference after about 12 weeks total. That’s when i started walking. The issue for me is I had so much leg atrophy it took months to come back using elliptical. So when i started walking it was with a huge limp and took a lot of physical therapy to even get limited range of motion back
They will stay in. They will take them out if they become an issue down the line.. it's not impossible to get some discomfort, but the vast vast majority of people live with them in just fine.
@@BenParkes Hey .. DOES YOUR LEG WITH THE SCREWS MAKE NOISE WHEN PASSING THROUGH YHE AIRPORT? And if it does.. what do you tell the officers?… or do u have a medic card to show them that u had surgery and screws implants 🤔

I have screws and a rod did you get yours taking out? Thanks
Hi Ben, Can I ask what that cold compression thing that was recommended for your ankle was cold and where did you get it from. I’m currently suffering from an ankle injury and that looks like it could help with my recovery many thanks and hope your recovery goes well
Currently got the Adidas Ultraboost 19, yet think the lifespan is on the way out so looking to upgrade ahead of London Marathon training again - Only looking to get the one pair of running shoes rather than having a set of rotation shoes... Sarah just retired a pair of turbo 1's at 1000 miles.. I usually get about 1000k from them, which is still pretty good. The turbo 1 is a little heavier, but a bit more supportive than the 2's. If you can find some 1's then go for those I'd say! Good luck at London!
I need These walking sticks wright now b.s i am in hospital injured the ankle joint right leg so please send me . And the hospital is different from ours

Hi Ben, all the best to you with your recovery. I also suffered a Weber C fracture just one day after running the Berlin Marathon in 2017. Stupid accident, just like yours. 8 screws in total, including a syndesmotic screw. The question for you now will be if you keep the metal in or have it taken out*?, like I had*. Opinions on that differ from surgeon to surgeon. Just 2 points in relation to this video. The headline is more dramatic than what the content revealed and you would be a little more easily understood if you did not grin so widely throughout each sentence. You can be more neutral at times, have all reason to. Just my thoughts. Again, all the best and London, here you come.
Ben in a weird way, you can take huge positives that this happened to you when it did. I reckon if you’d done this a couple of weeks later your routine op would have been cancelled. Maybe fate decided you needed a couple of months off when there were no races going on?! Who knows! Hope you’re well
I didn't add it in the video as thought it might be negative, but the surgeon said if I went in with the same injury today it would be 50/50 whether they'd operate... and if they didn't, I'd have had a bad ankle for the rest of my life. Pretty lucky whatever way you look at it!
@@BenParkes they would’ve operated on it regardless. It wasn’t elective surgery, it was “P2” surgery which means they would’ve had to have done the surgery within 2 months otherwise it would’ve resulted in catastrophic problems later in life
These updates are great. Happy for you. Currently I’m bummed because I sprained my ankle while running a week ago and can’t run. Running has been getting me through the days.
Ben Parkes well I been running again after ten days off and gotten ever better with PR my mile . But now two months later I reinjured myself today on a jog a minute and a half in . So bummed

It wasn’t elective surgery, it was “P2” surgery which means they would’ve had to have done the surgery within 2 months otherwise it would’ve resulted in catastrophic problems later in life
Clickbait! 😂 glad to see u on road to recovery!
"Slight fear of Sarah driving"... :D :D Of course she will never see this :D :D ah ah ah ah
Vasco Tavares the euro woman in my family are the most awesome standard/manual drivers I know. Go Sarah!
@@jenniferwebster405 I apologize I you took it wrong. I just found it very funny ;)

I'm still struggling on my range of motion. Any advice?? I have the same hardware in my right ankle lol
How long does the plate and screws stay in for ?
Good news Ben - you can tell how much it means to you. See you on 4th October.
Kiki is the cutest
Are you going to be wearing any ankle support when you get back up and running?
Possibly.. not sure yet. Aiming to do lots of ankle strength and mobility for the next couple of weeks before running any distance!
Great news about the leg
8PM on Thursday - shot on my birthday 😎
So happy for you but take care still 👊
Hey Ben. Normally if your bones healed ok you can get the screws and plates removed
Can you feel the metalwork would they not want to take it out will you feel it when running
These updates are great. Happy for you. Currently I’m bummed because I sprained my ankle while running a week ago and can’t run. Running has been getting me through the days.
You'll be back soon Adlinda!!
Ben Parkes well I been running again after ten days off and gotten ever better with PR my mile . But now two months later I reinjured myself today on a jog a minute and a half in . So bummed
We hope u get back soon on the ground 🤘🥳💪👍👊🌞❤
