  • Arlan Hamilton spent her entire life in and out of homelessness, working low-wage jobs, being overlooked and underestimated. In 2015 she started an investment fund called Backstage Capital. Today it's worth over $20 million with investors like Mark Cuban, Marc Andreessen and Stewart Butterfield.
    There are three numbers to watch for in this story: $50,000, Arlan’s first outside investment, $6 million, the total value of her fund and 2, the percent of companies that receive investment from Backstage Capital. Here’s how Arlan Hamilton went from homeless to running her $20 million venture capital fund.

    I’m actually glad the interview asked her about “working at Starbucks” because a lot of Americans truly believe that being homeless is a choice as they grew up under Reagan era welfare queen propaganda or had parents who did. They have no idea how poverty and homelessness compounds. Often homeless people are fined simply for sleeping in public and going to the bathroom in public since everywhere is private property in America. they can’t pay the fines so they are jailed. When they finally get a job, they have to pay those fines so they can barely keep their head above water.

    Wow! So inspiring to see how Arlan crushed literal mountains to get to where she is now. She really believed in herself, and had incredible street smarts - every experience she had, she learned from and made the most out of it - she kept moving forward, and thinking big, even when she was homeless! What an absolute legend.

    It's problematic when people of privilege do interviews with a lack of empathy, knowledge and bias. CNBC Make It, though I love your show, I believe it would be good to have some nuance training for your reporters, so that the interviews can be much more impactful. This lady is helping businesses make money by tapping all potential - so the question on making money is very redundant / comes from a place of ignorance Journalism must evolve to be better educated about life outside the lens of privilege. Also, kudos to this lady for building such an amazing portfolio - she is rocking it, and creating opportunity for a more inclusive, sustainable world with expansive services and products that serve a larger, wider audience.

    Idk about her…at the end of the video she’s said something along the lines of “we’re [Backstage Capital] not investing money in your company based on the color of your skin” when that’s exactly what her blog post was about, black entrepreneurs not being able to raise capital - based off of their skin color, rather than their ideas. Sounds contradictory and not realizing that the color of her skin was precisely the reason of her struggles in the VC world. Don’t lose touch of your roots.
    Also having a goal of investing in 2% of companies isn’t necessarily inclusive, plain and simple exclusive.

    • @NokthulaMadondo
      @NokthulaMadondo 2 роки тому +3

      Absolutely, I found that contradictory too. In fact I thought it was a missed opportunity on her part. And I don't understand why she would go on about the 90% white male investment and not take the opportunity to correct that.

      @daurorascontinuingvsgjourn8220 2 роки тому +2

      My understanding of her comment was basically alluding to the fact that if a black person receives funding from her firm, they don’t have to be concerned about race when walking through the door. The entrepreneur simply needs to be concerned with having a good solid product!

      Not only that, but live at home with your parents if possible. For whatever the reason, most millennials find it shameful to still live with their parents and feel they must leave their house once they graduate from college. However, even if they lived with their parents for two years after college they would be far more stable to step out on their own with proper savings. Occupation is also another component on how quickly a person can develop a decent cushin savings which reduce the time spent living at your parent's house.

    Shame, it seems like he invested in TOKENISM, instead of actually caring.

    I'm calling You out on her story .She said she couldn't get a Air BNB .sh she said she landed and she couldn't get an Airbnb and that she came to California and her 30s but I do recall you graduate from high school at 18 she said that she didn't she wanted to make money she want to go to college but plenty of people work and go to college at the same time it's just a matter of prioritizing a 8-hour job as as well as taking part-time classes full-time classes some type of classes to go to college so I'm confused with that so from age of 20 to her 30s you mean to tell me she couldn't save enough money by saving $50 a month so that she can have at least $5,000 before she's 30 to get an Airbnb in California she said she couldn't get an Airbnb it seems to me she didn't plan very well it seems to me that all that brain power and smartness in high school didn't lose her to get to I can just simply save some money simply save $50 a week simply say $50 a month until I have the designated $5,000 $10,000 considering she took her over 20 years from the age of being an adult to make it to California to sleep outside she could have saved that I mean she took it took her over 10 years from the age of 20 to 30 she in 10 years you could have saved $10,000 $1,000 a year to order to get at Airbnb that would sustain you until you found a job because therefore you would have had an address I'm buying b******* on that story she wants to make this story so address seems like to me she was lazy and she didn't plan very well and she just got out there and

      Auto spell I'm not buying her story .she chose to wait until she was in her thirties to come to California she didn't seem to have planned well or saved any money prior to the age of eight from 18 to in her 30s when she finally decide to make the trip to California she could have again she could have worked while she was in college she could have simply worked and saved money saved $50 a month would have made enough money in 5 years at the age of 25 instead of taking until she was in her thirties to come to California she could have saved the designated amount of money 5 to $10,000 in a 10-year span from the age of 18 to the age of 30 she surely had enough time to save some money to get an Airbnb that was sustain her a couple of months which would have given her an address when she applied for a regular job like Starbucks like you said and that would have sustained her her savings until she got on she just it seems to me she used this as a storyline because there's no way she's in her 30s living on the ground I understand homelessness but I also understand that in her position since she did have a pizza job she just needed to save more instead of just up and coming to California you can't tell me that even if it is taking her a long time $50 a month is still savings that would have gotten her to her plan before she was 30 since she got here after she was 30 make it make sense
