    This is so detailed and thorough. Thank you for this! I own a prime and I love it but I’m also quite terrified if anything ever happens to this system. This is confirming that I will be relying on specialists at the dealership if this battery system ever needs service. Hopefully it doesn’t and it lasts a looooong time

    Thank you for the video! I love all of your videos! Also, a fun fact: the doorman part number for this battery pack is 587-007. And according to the doorman products site page it was used in certain 2009 to 2018 Toyota vehicles and certain 2011 to 2017 Lexus vehicles. Surprisingly you can order replacement packs through at least 1 of the national US auto parts stores with a 2 year warranty. I found out that today.

    The other receptacle is likely Mennekes type 2 that is used in Europe. And here in Europe we sometimes call the J1772 type 1. Also in some European countries ,for instance France and Italy, you can find type 3a or type 3c, but for those you have to get an adapter because no cars use it. Type 3a and type 1 support single phase and type 2 and type 3c support three phase. And for DC fast charging we use either CCS Combo type 2 or Chademo.

      In addition: The Chinese use different separate AC and DC charging connectors, which are called GB/T according to the GB/T 20234.2-2011 standard. The GB/T AC connector looks quite similar to the European Type2 connector, but is not compatible. The GB/T DC connector has some similarity to the Japanese ChaDeMo connector. So for AC charging there are mainly three different connectors in use worldwide. The Type1 for the US and Japan, the Type2 for Europe both according to the IEC 62196 and GB/T AC for China. Thank you for your great detailed und explained videos! Maybe you can get your hands on a Tesla Model 3 in future as well :)

      @WeberAuto don't thank just yet, because apart from the general info on French EV socket formats, the "likely" part is just wrong guessing.
      On European Prius PHV the left J1772 is replaced by an IEC 62196 Type 2 connector aka Mennekes socket.
      The right empty space on non-japanese vehicles is just a holder for the left socket cap, as you can perfectly see in this picture from Toyota Europe media site:
      content.presspage.com/uploads/1523/500_2017-prius-phv-aqua-detail-07.jpg
      On Japan alone Toyota offers the CHAdeMO quick DC charging option that you mentioned, as depicted on this other picture here:

    Would you be able to do an in-depth video on the plug-in battery charger at 10:30? I'm curious how it interfaces to the J1772 plug to negotiate charging current, and how it knows the battery SoC to manage charging. The 6.6kW rav4 prime plug-in charger I expect to be similar, but it also has a 1500W inverter located somewhere near or on the same module, so not sure how that charger might be different.

    Glad to see you back on UA-cam, Professor Kelly!
    I'll never be a fan of batteries in the passenger compartment or ones cooled with a duct from inside. In an accident that damages the battery and potentially disables or traps the passengers this could quickly go very badly. But high voltage cables inside under the rear seat cushion? Toyota is famous for their engineering but much in this car (including the air cooled charger under the seat) makes this model seem like an afterthought.
    I do like the battery cells though, packaged like Leaf batteries but easier to get to. I'll will start looking for a Prius PHEV that's been wrapped around a tree. Unfortunately (for me anyway) Prius drivers tend to be very careful. If I find one the cells will be in great shape with those extremely modest use and charging voltages.
    I do hope you are able to post a tear-down of the Gen 2 Volt drive unit some day. I'll never take one apart. I just want to see a better explanation than GM gives.
    Interesting Gen 2 Chevy Volt trivia: I rode my motorcycle to work one day last week here in Texas. I left my '18 Volt fully charged outside but plugged in. My wife was surprised to hear the fans and maybe the compressor start while she was outside for a moment in the punishing midday heat. Apparently the battery cooling system will come on when plugged in if the battery exceeds some limit.
    And again, Glad to have you back.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 років тому +1

    I have learned several interesting things and particularly about the cooling of the high volt battery intakes from the interior and the actual charger below the rear seats.
    Also, I have a doubt about the aux battery which is draining after the charging and now with your explanation, as I have understood, that could be a problem with the interior temperature which is usually about 85F-90F. Next time I will measure the amount of drainage at different temperatures and share with you.

    Great as always professor. Seems like Toyota is a lot more forthcoming with its battery capacity - the official literature from Toyota does rate the battery at 8.8 kWh which is pretty bang on with the actual 8.79 kWh on the pack itself. In comparison with the Bolt, despite its significantly larger capacity, is marketed at 60 kWh while its true capacity is actually 57 kWh.

    I have a 2020 Prime Limited, 3 months old with about 1600 miles on it. It has recently developed a squeak coming from the battery area. I have removed all the plastic parts to be sure it wasn’t that. Anyway, you hear it most when you tweak the chassis by going sideways through a dip in the road... I can only think it sounds like metal on metal... I wonder if this top battery is rubbing against the one below it?? Any ideas? Is it missing some foam padding between the two? What can be done? Thoughts? TIA. 😊

    @22.12 you mention that the system has a DC to DC converter.
    Is that a line that is always on or only active when charging?
    I'd like to add two features to my vehicle without compromising the systems battery sensors.
    one would be to add a sine wave inverter and pull from Aux battery. This way I could use my vehicle as a temporary generator when necessary. (maybe change the starter to a deep cycle?)
    second would be to add a small 12v fridge but have it run off the traction battery via a DC to DC step down. This way if the traction battery system does die, the car can still turn on via the 12v starter battery.
    any thoughts?

    Thanks Professor Kelly and W.S.U. for this fascinating video on the Prius Prime that we have owned since last September. We live outside Memphis so I was interested in a comment you made concerning the battery cooler. I have observed that now that the extreme heat has hit our area I frequently get a message when I turn off the vehicle whether I would authorize the use of the air conditioner while the next charging event happens. So to answer your question about whether it is automatically defaulted on I would say not. The battery heater does have an off and on switch in the menu. I don't know if there is a connection but I have not had any success setting the air conditioning to pre condition the cabin at the end of the charging cycle. Others have had the same issue from the online forums. I do keep allowing the car to use the air conditioner to cool at charging but it keeps asking me to allow each time I turn the car off when the climate is hot.

    I have a question;
    Can be battery be charged on the Prius plug-in, at a same time as discharging? For example; if you have a fully charged battery in the Prius plug-in, you put the car on a spinning machine (to spin the wheels) get the speed to 65 mph, then plug the car to a charger- 208 or 240 volts. Will the battery be charging ? or perhaps will it slow down the discharge ?

I know it will lose more trunk space, but I am willing to give that up for double or even triple the EV distance. Thanks.

      Toyota will never do that. It would be a cool thing, but the entire system would need to be changed to make that work. Safety and crashworthiness are issues that would be a problem as well. Best wishes!

    John - do you see any other evidence of where the Level 3 charging cables or equipment might reside?
    Also, do you think it would be an easy retrofit? Would the charging port connect directly to the battery? (DC to DC) Or still go through on onboard charger? I'm wondering if the Japanese battery is any different, or if this US model can be quick charged with the right hardware.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 років тому

      Good questions. I suspect the battery is the same. It would bypass the on-board charger and connect directly to the battery junction block near the contactors. The contactors would need to be programmed to turn on to allow the charge. I doubt you could retrofit since it would require reprogramming several ECUs.

      @fiehlsport 6 років тому

      WeberAuto thanks for the insight. I feared some ECU flashing may be required - just some TechStream programming would be luck!
      Now... to find a wrecked PHV from Japan...

    I have 2 Gen 2 and I can just deadlift the battery out but this baby looks like it weighs more than 120lbs. Do you have the actual weight? Also, did I hear that the engine can charge the main battery? If I'm not mistaken, the first Plug-In Prius had a separate battery that had to be charged from an outside source only. The new Prime only has one traction battery so it can be charged by external power OR the engine?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 років тому

      270 lbs of battery weight. The high voltage battery can be charged by the engine in a special mode. All plug-in Prius models (2012-2018) use one high voltage battery

      John - in the early 2000s, I was a member of the San Diego Prius Club. We had some unusual opportunities like driving the Prius C prototype. Another prototype was an early plug-in Prius that would only go about 14 miles on a charge. It had two big batteries and one was the normal big traction battery. The plug-in battery was separate and was not chargeable by the main battery. I thought this was normal for all the plug-in hybrids until the Prime? As for all the LION Prii - I don't think I could replace the bad modules like I have in the Gen 2 and 3. Those LION packs don't look like they can be easily taken apart. By the way, I'm surprised you found a Prime battery from a boneyard. I bet that cost the school a small fortune.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 років тому

      Wow, that sounds like it was an interesting opportunity. The prototype plug-in models did have two separate batteries, not production models. The Prime battery from a salvage yard on eBay was a rare find. It had just been posted and I bought it instantly. It was actually listed at a cost that was less than a Gen-2 Prius used battery; incredible deal!

    It’s been too long! Looking forward for another series!
    On the charger under the back seat are the AC and DC connectors equal? Can they be plugged wrong by accident? The connectors on the battery for the inverter/motor don’t seem to have any label or differentiating color, how do you know which one is positive?

    • @WeberAuto

      Thank you! The charger connectors cannot be interchanged, there are slight differences. The large connectors are also different. I had to measure the polarity to determine which one was positive.

    Hi something incorrect here I have a 2020 Prius Prime charging at home and at charging station 220v only takes 2 hours can at best get 28 miles other times 24 miles. Why is your charging taking so long? And I am using 6.03 KWh what is up with that also. I would like to hear what the difference is or what. Thanks
