I always loved how even though he was a borderline sociopath he was always extremely polite and gentlemanly to people that were good to him.
He wasn't a sociopath. He's just a broken man. War does that to you. Whatever he went through gradually broke his soul. Can't blame the poor guy
@@mixrable1212 nope remember he is a gta character
I think it’s unfair to call him a sociopath. He’s a product of his upbringing. Robbed of a happy childhood and forced to be a soldier, forced to witness atrocities and watch the people he loved die. He just buried whatever morality and idealism he may have once had deep because the world just hurt him one too many times.
@@Garrus1995 This! A sociopath is more like Trevor. Or maybe psychopath is the proper term for him.

I don't know if it's intentional, but Niko seems really awkward at the start of this scene, like he's not at all used to kindness and good manners coming from Faustin's wife. I think that's honestly beautiful and kind of sad

Make it 3 hours, this could have been perfect gta movie, Game itself is just like a movie, i mean gta 5 and San andreas is great story is great as well but this story gta 4 is a real deal! Better story than San andreas and V
I replayed this game so many times I lost count. At least 10 times.
Manuel Amaya Exactly. The story is absolutely perfect and is really really good movie material.
I'm writing one right now
I just noticed how Nico always is on alert.
For example, before he entered the house he looked around, searching for enemies.
The same when he entered the living room; looking around for ambushes or dangers in general.
Small little details, which is why I loved GTA IV. The story was so dark and realistic.
(Late reply, ik) even when moving into the new apartment mallory set up for him and Roman it's like his eyes are glued to the other side of the room, where there's a door or 2 he was looking at, scanning for anyone hiding.
War must've made him paranoid
I just thought Niko had ADHD or was just nervous
Yeah R* really do go above and beyond for the minor details, Niko is a war vet and now hardened criminal so he is always alert and scanning the room and looking for exits. Makes sense.

Always found it interesting that so many people offer Niko whiskey, vodka, beer, etc and he always turns them down, but when Ms. Faustin offers him tea, he takes it and drinks it. Just a funny little detail about how he's really a nice person like she is, and he doesn't REALLY align well with the individuals he so often works for.
I noticed the same thing! It’s definitely well writing and detailing that the developers and writers did to game. It shows how Ms. Faustin is one of the few people he trusts and is comfortable being around and talking to. 10/10 writing.
Well it's probably mostly because those are alcohol and Niko wants to keep his minds sharp for the job he's doing
It could be the reason he doesn’t drink is because he might have gotten hammered during the war and something popped off while he was drunk and he lost people and couldn’t do anything about it due to being inebriated.
I always looked it as nico just doing what he has to do to survive. His whole life he has done fucked up things and its the only thing he is good at so he does it. Never outta want but outta need.
It was only in One Last Thing where Niko orders a Vodka on the rocks.
GTA IV so far has the best and the most complicated story ever, Niko Bellic has the most complex personality a GTA character ever had, he's one of those soldiers who forced by orders or by their own frustration committed genocide against the innocent and now they're self loathing and have troubled consciences. Even if he's a war criminal, I still feel bad for the things that have happened to him even tho he's just a bloody video game character.
Actually he wasn't the one who did it. He was actually talking that in general human creatures don't have a soul because human's do these kinds of things all over the world. Niko actually saw somebody doing this and it must have scarred his mind heavily.

GTA 4's story makes GTA 5's look like a comedy.
Well GTA 5 had a lot of funny moments. GTA 5 is very lighthearted compared to GTA 4
That's because GTA 5 is a comedy
It more or less was, right? It put the satire at the forefront while GTA4 was a lot more story and character focused.
It still has its dark and serious moments but you can tell they wanted GTA5 to be lighter and more glamour focused after GTA4s dark story and serious tone.
@@theamazingcj2748 it's a shame the joke wasn't very funny
@@Spitfire_94 basically like real life LA vs. NY
Niko can handle crazy mob bosses ranting and raving (he even cracks jokes at their expense TO THEIR FACE) but when someone shows him the slightest bit of kindess he doesn't really know how to react. He's so used to the worst of humanity.
And almost immediately opens up to them, which is actually heartbreaking. If he'd only had one or two people that showed him some kindness and support he might've healed. Instead he got war, genocide, the underworld and generally the absolute worst humanity had to offer. And he adapted to it as he pretty much had to.
Love this scene. Niko was able to bond with Ms. Faustin due to a shared attachment to their past. However, their attachments are completely opposite in nature. Ms. Faustin fondly remembers the happy times that she and Mikhail had together, where as to Niko, the past is a horrific abyss that he tries so hard to runaway from, yet no matter how hard he tries, the past sucks him back in.
Surprising that the 90s wasn’t friendly or fondly favored by Eastern Europe at that time. Criminality dominated Russia. 🇷🇺 War dominated former Yugoslavia. 🇷🇸

PickledPopo Niko Bellic was polled as the least popular of all GTA main character, considered, “too boring.”
Both Niko and GTA IV are my favorite GTA characters and games.
Niko is so dark, raw and unrelenting. A good depiction of a hardened killer and criminal, with just a bit of melodrama thrown into his character to spice him up and make him entertaining.
GTA IV had my favorite storyline as well. Very hard-hitting, personal and dark. Fun and intriguing with great characters. Much more toned-down and realistic than other GTAs so I could connect better and I loved the realistic driving mexhanics as well.
GTA V went back to being over the top, with the freedom, engagement and massive content of the former GTA game set in SA. But that dark, gritty, criminal underworld vibe was lost again. It went from being a memoir to a fiction again.
Rockstar needs to make two GTA series. One, more over the top and whacky, like GTA V and GTA: SA. And the other, more gritty and real, like GTA IV and GTA: VC.
b0x1n9f4n 100% agree
NIKO'S REAL NAME IS NIKOLA BELIC. HE IS SERB 🇷🇸
I’ve been playing gta iv recently and it’s hitting differently with everything going on in Eastern Europe rn , it’s sad to see
That part of the world has seen too many wars unfortunately. Niko is likely a veteran of the Yugoslav wars in the 90s where a lot of atrocities happened.
It’s all a lie like covid. Just cuz you seen news covering war or covid doesn’t mean it’s real
Niko’s story made me want to research about the history of the Balkans and since I have some heritage from the Balkans I was intrigued about learning the history but what I learned is that the history of the Balkans is hardship, brutality and war. Which is why I live in The United States and not in the Balkans. The cultures there are interesting though.
I was born in 1993 in Serbia. I left Serbia in 97 and came to America to live with my American family. I am glad to be in America and to call myself American but I am glad I'm a Serb also. I grew up and seen what war does to people and how it turns men into monsters. People say nico is a sociopath. No, I disagree, Nico is a broken man, he has seen the horrors and atrocities of war and atrocities he had probably had to do. War is a scary and sad thing how it turns some into monsters and others into brokenness

When he starts talking about the atrocities he's seen ( 1:55 ) and talking about his PTSD, his mannerisms completely change
Before that ( 1:40 ), he doesn't blink once while telling her about some of the things he did
But afterwards, when he's going in to detail, initially he rapidly blinks _a lot,_ followed by him scrunching his eyes together ( 2:00 ) for a couple seconds
I've seen some videos of veterans and ex-army members talking about their own PTSD, and almost always I end up seeing that same kind of thing - rapid blinking and tightly closing their eyelids - so whoever animated Niko in that one bit must have spent a good amount of time watching/talking with people who have PTSD and taking a lot of notes for how their face contorts when they recount stuff, cause that's some incredible detail that most probably never would have noticed.
Honestly, PTSD isn’t a real disease. It’s basically just emotionally painful trauma. If it’s a real disease, then, more than half of the world right now has it.
The only reason why doctors call it a disease is to get money from medicines patients buy.
However, I agree it is very serious and should not be taken lightly as this happens to most people.

Niko Bellic was the only protagonist in the entire franchise that felt human to me
Niko and Victor Vance are probably the most humane characters in the franchise.
I'd argue CJ & Franklin did as well cause of their up bringings
@flygod916 CJ is basically a super soldier at the end of the game: A gangbanger invading a military base and stealing a jetpack. You could argue about Franklin, but the more goofy narrative of GTA V is more at fault here then Franklin as a character.
Niko is a soldier, he fought in a war, for me he is the only gta character, where his actions, accomplishments seem believable to me.
For those wondering, Niko is referring to the Bosnia War that took place between 1992 and 1995. Now you can correct me if I’m wrong on some parts. The war was a result or part of the breakup of the country of Yugoslavia, who’s country was and I quote “subdivided along ethnic lines into six republics and forcibly held together by Tito under communist rule. But when Tito died and communism fell, those republics pulled apart.”. As a result and I quote again “Its constituent republics declared independence due to unresolved tensions between ethnic minorities in the new countries, which fueled the wars.”. Essentially these republics were fighting to establish their own countries no matter the cost. Bosnia was just another part of this break up and war in which, and I quote again “Following Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of independence which gained international recognition, the Bosnian Serbs and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), mobilized their forces inside Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to secure ethnic Serb territory, then war soon spread across the country”.
So in short, and you can correct me if I’m wrong, the Bosnia War was a conflict to ethnically cleanse Bosnian Territory and much more in which many war crimes were committed including rape, ethnic cleansing as aforementioned, genocide, and reconciliation
you wanna actually learn something about that war? watch "the weight of chains" by boris malagurski. It was a series of wars started by fucking idiots, who ruined a good country all over nationalistic bullshit. Yugoslavia wasn't communist, I don't know why our own people have the notion it was communist. It was communist for like 5 years after ww2 only. Niko Bellic has the best character development in the GTA franchise. He starts off as a violent kid soldier who was taught how to shoot guns in the Military and Navy. Once he arrived to Liberty, he becomes nihilistic and on a search for guidance and hope.
This video game storyline is way better than heaps of movies in Hollywood.
There is nothing psychopathic about niko in this scene. He is a sad and broken, honest man. Being a hired gun is just the only thing the world taught him from a young age. He could have been a dentist, football player, or artist. He is so polite to nice and honest people, but a terror to the monsters. When you grow up, you realize everyone has history, and not everyone wants just to spill it out.
Edit: And of course, yes, sure he does very bad things to sometimes innocent people but then again remember. In war the word innocent translates to collateral. Growing up this way he never had a chance to be stable.

Niko's different. As much as I love him he's sorta doesn't belong in a GTA game because he's more than that. That's the reason most casual GTA players tend to dislike him.. Without any dissing but still, he's not the character for the average GTAO player. Most GTA protagonists (even before IV) were somewhat cartoonish and funny, grotesque. After IV too. But Niko was a strange one in a lifetime short anchor point where R* hit a very specific nail in the spot. He was built different from the start, and even though I would love to see him or another similar character again I know that won't happen. And I actually think that's not a problem, Niko is often criticizzed as being boring. On the other hand as the most authentic GTA protagonist. And that's perfectly fine... As much of a Niko B. fanboy I am, I don't want to see him again, because I'm certain that they would at best ruin his character. He found his peace after all those things he went trough. Leave him alone.
Niko's story is a perfect explanation of why he's such a complicated character. He doesn't believe in the human soul, that's why he's so good at commiting violence, but he is still able to be kind and caring despite that ideology
This will get more traffic now
2:16 ‘God is very complicated’
God is a Serb
Oxide 👌
Serb has eye of the falcon 2Pac is the prophet of god
Бог jе србин
God made everyone in His own image, Albanians included, and He loves us all
The best cutscene in the game, in my opinion
Imagine if Rockstar did a war game. They managed to tell a good backstory from LA Noire with Cole Phelps and an interesting backstory with Niko.

These are my top 3 fav protagonists in the gta series:
1. Niko Bellic
2. Tommy Vercetti
3. CJ
Same
Franklin had a very grounded story as well
I love how the location of each GTA game impacts the storyline. Liberty City is based off of new york, it feels dark, gritty and industrial. Los Santos is based off of Los Angeles/Hollywood, having it feeling sunny, fabricated and surreal.
They should make a movie about Niko's entire backstory
A lot of Niko was inspired by a Russian film called Behind Enemy Lines and a few others.

She was like “alright calm down chief”
Mentality and living in post-soviet countries is just plain depressing. Most of Polish or Russian movies and books are just about death, decadence and nihilism. It is sad but at the same time it has its intriguing character. In modern days and with new generetion it is starting to change, because of the influence of the west. Still as a Pole (which is still not that depressing as being someone from further east like Ukrainian or Russian) I can only say that is a very ambivalent feeling - to be a Slav.
Russia is still like that which is even more sad.
@@AlexKS1992 weeell here we have a saying which means something like "flies see shit while bees see flowers", this guy might be right but theres always an other side of the story
@@AlexKS1992 not really but also yes.
Niko is not from “post-soviet” country.
Yugoslavia was non-aligned state and The none-aligned movement was created in Belgrade Yugoslavia, today Belgrade Serbia. Yugoslavia was one of the few brave states that resisted both Western and Eastern powers, this was especially a very brave fact considering that the Cold War was in full swing at the time. Everything went to hell after the death of President Josip Broz Tito, who died on 4th of May 1980 and war escalated in the 90s.
@@tatula1312Still it had a lot of Soviet influence despite not being in Warsaw Pact or USSR. It was a communistic state afterall.
That first scene makes me remember Rdr2 when arthur talk with the sister at the train station. It's very real and the lines are perfect.
GTA 4 is surprisingly well written. People focus on the violence and the swearing but it has moments like this too. The quiet moments. I like the quiet moments.

1:35 this and one of many scenes in this amazing game is why my boi Niko beats any other gta character
War: Won medals, lost souls.
I love this game, it’s very well written
I think Niko was the best gta protagonists
Niko maybe short for Nicolai but in Serbian the word niko translates to " No one"
2:48 "Fug tha money"
This scene always makes me think the entire plot of GTA IV is some kind of "Ghost of Christmas Past" Story where everybody is talking about Niko in the third person without Niko ever realising
0:54 "Haha" **SIP**
I always thought of this scene as like an ode to Dostoevsky.
Two Slavs drinking tea from an old samovar, discussing the intersection of god and horror. Almost reads like an obscene epilogue of the Brothers Karamazov - where Mitya escapes with Grushenka to dreaded America and loses all sense of Orthodox morality. It’s wonderful.
I wouldn’t even know what to say after that church story
0:53 You can feel that awkward laugh Niko has.
War criminals against Serbian people will never be forgotten
War criminals against hrvatska will never be forgotten
@@LV-sb8qx Niko is represented like Serbian from Bosnia sooo wrong comment
@@igormarinkovic1531 in know but serbian war crimes were much More!

@@igormarinkovic1531 gta IV is no game about Serbia😂
We all see how Niko shows the humanity he had to repress during the war yes, but also notice how Faustin, on top of being angry and self loathing is also tired of being on such a state all the time, deep down he knows it's not good for him nor anyone around him, but it's much harder for him to go back from that, it shows on how he dismisses Niko and then buries his head on his arms in hope to get some peace and quiet, which he doesn't
i don't know what it is but when dimintri and mikhial enter the room its like the tone completely changes
