Hey dudes, this is my first real attempt at a "video essay" type of content and it took me a ton of research and effort. I hope u like and if u do smash like so I'll do more interesting ones about Russia or something EDIT: A bunch of comments here are saying “Niko is Serbian though, not Russian”. I’ve never said Niko was Russian lmao, I thought him being Serbian isn’t even worth mentioning because everybody knows it. Still, I said that he’s a Bosnian War veteran, which I think makes it pretty obvious that he isn’t Russian. I talked about the 90s in Russia to bring context to the movies, not to imply that it has something to do with Niko
Niko grew up in Yugoslavia (SERBIA) , where he fought in the Yugoslav Wars. He later worked for organized crime syndicates as a hired-gun in Liberty City. Ever since the Yugoslav Wars ended, Niko's main goal in life was to find and kill one of two men: Florian Cravic or Darko Brevic, for one of them betrayed and nearly killed him during the Wars. Niko is the younger cousin of Roman Bellic and the son of Milica Bellic.
I moved from Russia to US in early 2000s and when I first played GTA4 it really reminded me of Russia's 90-2000s... that radio station was really cool. The game definitely has a lot of similarities with БРАТ movies. For Russian people reading this comment "Мы русские не обманываем друг друга!" PS. Most Russian people who live in US are sort of stuck in time - they still listen to old russian music and celebrate russian holidays etc. i find it interesting.
Vietnamese people are the same in the US from my experience. They celebrate all the old holidays, speak more old fashioned Vietnamese, and listen to a lot of old fashioned music and make it here even though they fell out of style back home. Though, we fit better here in America since South Vietnam fell and their ideals of a nation fit much better with the US.
Hey NFKRZ, found your channel through Bald and Bankrupt. Since you did a GTA IV video I figured I would give you some more behind the scenes info as to how R* works. I was a former employee between 2014-2016 on the cutscene animation team. (Sorry I'm late, went through your older videos) Essentially, the Houser Bros have their hands in everything relating to game production. They play the games, change the gameplay, and Dan Houser and a few other writers write the game script. They have an entire team of researchers dedicated to making each game feel authentic to the time period and culture they are trying to portray. These researchers have libraries and libraries of content that they use to find as much information about something as they can. I have seen the researchers use History channel and hundreds of reference books to get information. There is a high chance that the researchers, writing team, and Dan himself most likely watched the movies or the movies were recommended to them when doing their research. These guys go incredibly deep and detail when gathering background info which is why Red Dead Redemption feels authentic to the time period. Since they were covering a character from Eastern Europe, R* pooled all their resources to get as much authentic information as they possibly could. But not everything carries over in translation, like when the girl said she removed most of the songs they had selected. Sorry I'm late with the reply but I hope that helps shed some interesting information for you.

Whatever Rockstar does, they always add songs in the soundtrack from their inspiration. That's why every single GTA game since Vice City (with the exception of Liberty City Stories) has songs which featured in the TV series "MIami Vice". Because Miami Vice and Michael Mann are one of the major inspirations in their games. I think the same applies with GTA IV with the Brat movies, because that was major inspiration in the story, they decided to include a few songs in the soundtrack. But Ruslana said she suggested one of the songs, so perhaps she's a fan of the movies too. Using music from the inspiration helps setting the mood and immersion with the games. Rockstar knows how powerful a soundtrack can be, and that's what sets their games apart from the competition. The Houser's are big fans of crime movies and TV shows, so it wouldn't surprise me if they watch those in foreign languages too. I fully expect GTA 6 to be inspired by Narcos.
Same, I was absolutely jaw dropped when I first saw my brother playing it. The resemblance of realism, the car physics, the euphoria physics and so on. It was truly a next generation game. I couldn't care less if it had less features than SanAndreas. But I find it sad that some people don't see it that way. GTA IV is more a sequel to GTA III when it comes to technological gameplay advancements.

The thing about the GTA4 voiceover work is because of the way actor unions were structured with video games, it didn't even matter for the guy who DID do the actual voiceover in terms of making money, he only saw a little bit and never got any royalties or anything. And he was just some obscure voiceover actor and still is relatively, so really there isn't much of a loss there for turning down the work.
It's funny that everyone says that Niko was inspired by Sasha in Behind Enemy Lines because I remember an article where Rockstar "swore" Niko was based on one of their "company drivers" or some crap
9:50 thats not Chicago, that’s a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey he has on meaning he’s a Pittsburgh player completely different team. Still really cool though
Apparently, the actor who played the twins, had been a sports agent in the US until '98 and he was familiar with the manager and the main coach of the Penguins at that time. Because of that it was much easier and cheaper for the film crew to come to Pittsburgh and shoot the scenes with the local team instead of trying to involve the Chicago-based team. And since the average Russian viewer doesn't know much about the NHL, the movie director, I assume, wasn't really bothered by this little inconsistency in the film.
@@BlueHawkPictures17 That's like saying a Spaniard should be able to pronounce Italian names cause they both use the Latin script and are part of the same language family. Additionally, the letter 'ћ' in Белић does not exist in Russian, and his name is Anglicised and pronounced as such throughout GTA 4.
Now that you explicitly showed the parallels between the two, I can see the inspiration. I loved GTA 4 so much, I wrote an epilogue for Niko. 2008 was a great year. Thanks for the nostalgia, I played GTA 4, and LA Noir, both on the Xbox 360.

Great job on this video. Learned a lot & enjoy your channel. & you’re right, the songs missing in Vladivostok FM, it’s just not the same. The two songs that’s added by Seryoga are decent but King Ring is my jam. Glad I downloaded Vladivostok FM album when it was on iTunes.
I can tell the guilt that Russian actor's face during that interview. He refused to get that chance of a lifetime to act the protagonist in one of the biggest games of all time. Reminds me of Ned Luke on GTA V. He was about to reject the role as well. The difference is that he finally accept the role after reading the drafts about the character Michael and... He became famous on it.
I have mixed feelings with GTA4, as a Russian, it's probably the coolest thing ever to see a super popular game with a Russian main and fairly Russia centered lore? But for me this game was... meh... lol, don't get me wrong, probably the best story of any GTA game ever! But the game play feels super lacking, GTA San Andreas had so much more to do and so many things that were just completely not present in 4. Like turf wars, stats, the country side, and a lot more side things...

gta v: the only organic and sane storyline of all games
Seen Brother years ago, randomly found the dvd at home. Was good.
7:11 gee that car looks familiar

The thing about the GTA4 voiceover work is because of the way actor unions were structured with video games, it didn't even matter for the guy who DID do the actual voiceover in terms of making money, he only saw a little bit and never got any royalties or anything.
And he was just some obscure voiceover actor and still is relatively, so really there isn't much of a loss there for turning down the work.
I actually watched брат last year :D lmao, kick ass movie
А если по честному,очень крутое видео,душевное прям. Продолжай
It's funny that everyone says that Niko was inspired by Sasha in Behind Enemy Lines because I remember an article where Rockstar "swore" Niko was based on one of their "company drivers" or some crap

You get a big fat like for the background music, RIP Viktor Zoi
9:50 thats not Chicago, that’s a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey he has on meaning he’s a Pittsburgh player completely different team. Still really cool though
Babushka Blyat they’re in chicago in the movie tho, idk anything about hockey lol
NFKRZ lmao been watching your vids since 2016 I love u man. Love from Canada 🇨🇦
@@vitaly2432 that's awesome, thanks for the info, never knew about this
Niko Bellic: the most tragic, deepest, most relatable and compelling protagonist of all the Rockstar games.
Arthur Morgan: "OUTTA THE DAMN WAY!"
SUM MO' COMMENT ACTION honestly both of their are rockstsrs best characters ever created
Very disappointed that my fellow slav pronounced his name as Niko "Belik" instead of Niko "Belich" the way it's meant to be
To be fair, it's something the game got wrong too.
@Glebinator what do you mean by that?
@@BlueHawkPictures17 Why would a Russian know how to say a Serbian surname.
@@commentcontrol7187 because serbian uses cyrillic script and every russian knows lots of yugoslavs
The sole fact that GTA IV takes inspiration from russian/ post sovietic action movies makes it the most interesting GTA in my opinion
I've been trying to find Брат and Брат 2 for a while now, and now I just want to watch them more
Great video, thought that idea as well by myself couple of months ago when i replayed GTAIV
I miss the old content I loved learning about your culture came back to watch this gem again.
I would say Roman is targeted by the Albanian mafia more than the Russian mafia
WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE JC DENTON IN THEIR PROFILE PIC
Right? What the fuck is that about 😂
Who even is that?
maximilianlame fortnite troll and bunch of 12 old fans that do everything for him and jc denton is clone in deus ex so profile pics with jc denton is a bot
Niko Belic's name is supposed to be pronounced Нико Белић (put that in serbian google translate to hear how it sounds) smh....
Ustvari Rockstar je namerno napravio da se Niko preziva Belic a ne Belić
Nije
Нико Белых. Или Белый. У нас было бы как-то так
У нас тут разговоры за славян, ты зашёл не в тот двор со своим клятым английским)

Great job on this video. Learned a lot & enjoy your channel. & you’re right, the songs missing in Vladivostok FM, it’s just not the same. Restarting the game & hearing that first track, OMG hyped me up. Now with the replacement songs, it’s like WHAT...... nooooooooo. The two songs that’s added by Seryoga are decent but King Ring is my jam. Glad I downloaded Vladivostok FM album when it was on iTunes.
Niko was Serbian,WE NEED MORE SALV CHARACTERS
*slav
I agree. Serbs are turks so we need more Slav characters
Bruh I live at Brighton beach in NYC this is wild
Never heard of these movies but I might watch them
I can tell the guilt that Russian actor's face during that interview. He refused to get that chance of a lifetime to act the protagonist in one of the biggest games of all time.
Reminds me of Ned Luke on GTA V. He was about to reject the role as well. The difference is that he finally accept the role after reading the drafts about the character Michael and... He became famous on it.
That’s a big L. Shows a pic of big L on the screen😂😂
You got kino playing in the background
Isn‘t niko a serbian dude?
O H Y E AH Y E A H
The soundtrack to this video (drawing on the films and other sources) is banging.
but Niko is a Serb
he is a slav basically
Maybe he would've been a Russian if Vlad had voiced him, hehe.
He showed analogies with the russian characters. He wasn't mentioning that Niko himself is Russian
So? The stories are similar, not the same, there is a big difference between the same and similar.
Niko it's Roman, let's go Bowling
I see a little bit of Moro (Igla 1988) in Niko - travels from home to a new land, and struggles to find his way
This game proved that gta players like a good story it doesn’t have to be mindless killings and stuff.
This was really cool. I had no idea. Nico is definitely my favorite GTA character especially as a child of immigrants.
I feel so sad that they took away the music from the game soundtrack. I loved all the songs from both movies.
Problem with your theory on the acter is that he wouldn't have made much money from voicing niko. That was the complaint the actual voice acter made.
Spoiler altert man i didnt See brat 2
Okay that one guy in a thumbnail most definitely inspired Niko Bellic
I am absolutely sure these movies were watched by multiple people (at some level big or small) as research for these games.
Niko is Serbian
This guys accent changes every two minutes 😂
Niko Bellic is from Behind Enemy Lines
I have mixed feelings with GTA4, as a Russian, it's probably the coolest thing ever to see a super popular game with a Russian main and fairly Russia centered lore? But for me this game was... meh... lol, don't get me wrong, probably the best story of any GTA game ever! But the game play feels super lacking, GTA San Andreas had so much more to do and so many things that were just completely not present in 4. Like turf wars, stats, the country side, and a lot more side things...
He is yugoslavian not russian
@@ZiggyKBeats Huh? Rockstar's wiki says "Serbian, Croatian or Russian" lol
You forgot to add music credits in the description but at 4:30, is that Kino?
Yes
Roman Belic invented Uber
He ran an unlicensed bootleg taxi service
Review some russian Movies it would be something new!
As a Serbian, I got triggered how he pronounced niko belić but still, it is an amazing video
Is it emperor NAP0LE0N
Brother and brother 2 - very best films and excellent scenario ! Mashkov not knowed what is it, it's a pity i wanted to seen Mashkov in GTA 6 :)

Злой русский Николай - bad russian Nikolay.
Bad American businessman - плохой американский бизнесмен.
