Yeah, when I first saw that I thought it was just the blood mixing with the water, although now that I think about it that still doesn’t really make sense. Unless this girl has a clotting disorder or some other condition which is just never brought up, this is just the writing team (or whoever’s in charge of this kind of thing) just has no idea how periods work.

well she wasn't exactly a beacon of motherhood at any point in the movie - like, she tells her daughter to dress sexier, says "I'm riding him constantly" so boundaries are out the window, lying about her age to keep a guy, thinks the fertility gift for her teen daughter is normal, and so on. her disconnected and dismissive reasoning seem par for the course at that point, especially since it's followed by her choosing him over her daughter's well-being (tho maybe that was supposed be due to her being impregnated by his species but who even knows tbh).
I've met moms like that irl but rather than aliens, it was unfortunately just poor parenting and narcissism..

If you like Lovecraft's stories (not the person as he was a colossal racist), play Bloodborne and get the DLC! That is heavily inspired by that story. Fish peoples everywhere. And big scary shark men who definitely did make me "nope" out of the game for a bit.
The game in general has a lot of Lovecraftian and Eldritch otherworldly horror, however it is extremely hard (an understatement), and a PS4/PS5 exclusive so very understandable to not play it. But it is a gorgeous game (apart from big spider in the big room, and the spiders with human heads, not because spiders but because they have bowl cuts and it's a fashion abomination). Also, snakey Bois.
And potato spider lady. That will make sense if you look up Rom, the Vacuous One Bloodborne. She's a potato spider who used to be a lady. There's more to it than that but she looks like a potato spider.
I'd at least recommend lore videos and looking at the general designs of everything because good lord the designs, the atmosphere, 10000/10. It's very open to interpretation story wise, and the community is very kind on the whole and still pretty active for a slightly older game.
However, I cannot stress enough it is hard as hell, the atmosphere is extremely effective at putting you on edge, especially as everything gets more dark and messed up the further you progress. There's also a couple of different endings.
I will not spoil anything, but even watching playthroughs doesn't do the justice of experiencing it yourself.
You might need a guide though, as the game is kinda like "here are the controls, a general vague goal, now have fun dying!! :)".
Especially for important items and how to get to certain locations, the game is EXTREMELY unclear and vague but people have put out comphensive non spoiler guides.
Anyways, this was hopefully coherent, and I cannot stress how good, if not hard, game Bloodborne is.

I think my biggest issue with the movie is that there were plenty of ways the story could have been taken that weren't so awful? As a weirdo who still remembers doing a school project on sea lampreys, I was intrigued by the idea of a human-lamprey hybrid trying to do experiments to evolve. But as Amanda says, the movie brings up way too many questions that it doesn't answer.

I feel like this concept could be interesting if it was done with some more nuance.
Imagine: an irresponsible and immature mother with a strained and toxic relationship with her teen daughter in which there is pressure on the daughter to engage in stuff that the mom finds “cool” (telling her to dress more inappropriately, talking about very explicit sexual stuff). Basically, a textbook toxic relationship between mother and daughter.
Then, the mom gets married to this man who is predatory towards the daughter (both figuratively and literally), constantly using her crush on him to push her to do increasingly weird and uncomfortable things, and the healthy boundaries between all of the family members are slowly deteriorating, with the mom siding with her new husband and the daughter further being alienated from her friends. Adding the element of him being an alien could be used to further push the allegory of him being an “invader”, both metaphorically and literally.
But it seems like the movie wasn’t very well thought out in this respect. All of the tension between the characters just felt like everyone was stupid.
