It's amazing Gaggia is still making what is essentially the same machine design as I bought in 1998. It actually cost more then than it does now at over $550 (back then when $500 bought a lot more than it does today), but it was also wrapped in a very polished metal case even on the back side you didn't see. The more recent brushed metal finish just simply doesn't compare; and while I like the sort of art deco Gaggia text, I REALLY liked the elegant black script that said "Classic Coffee" over the word Gaggia on my 1998 version. It had a more classy, high-quality finish look back then. I would still be using it today for personal use, but when making espresso for more than one person I decided I wanted one with a double boiler (so I could make one espresso after another for multiple people). The machine actually still works today after 26 years, and I gave it to one of my friends about two years ago. It was pretty easy to maintain, and it made good espresso, just not quick enough in succession for what I wanted. If they made one as high end looking as it looked in 1998 I would consider buying another one today now that I'm at the point in life where I'm downsizing, and after getting 16 years of use out of Jura S9 superautomatic.
Hi, i was just about to order the new Gaggia Classic Evo 2023 when i saw pictures and posts on Gaggia classic facebook group mentioning that black flaking is coming out of the steam wand and that consumers are returning their new machines, they all seem to think that the new boiler coating is falling apart and no descaling or flushing is solving the issue. There's a post on reddit about it. I'm concerned, should I place the order or not? Any info about this???
I bought my classic evo 2023, from a shop in Germany and I have not experienced any of these issues. Perhaps bare in mind that perhaps people tend to post on FB about a machine’s issue and not about a workhorse that brew good espresso day in and day out without blinking 😊
The problem with the boiler coating flaking off and ending up in your cup is a deal breaker for me. Seems to be affecting a huge number of machines. Such a shame - I was definitely going to purchase the Classic.
Yeah I mentioned this in the video, it's called Exelia. When you say people have a problem with it, you mean they think it may cause problems in the future or they've actually reported problems? Cheers, Kev.
I think Classic (finally) needs a complete overhaul. Or at least a real Pro version that has a PID, slightly bigger/wider body, redesigned offshoot from the solenoid, redesigned tray, redesigned and more mobile steam wand among other things. It's overdue at this point.

I bought the 2019 red one in Madagascar for a fair price and I am so happy. There is very good coffee in Madagascar. Bourbon Pointu. So this machine is heaven sent to me.
What would be the best single boiler espresso machine for home use on the market based on its build quality and service? I know there are many, but if you had to choose one, which would it be? Good luck on your channel and see you in the next video.
Looks like they only modded manufacturing process to keep costs down. I have 2019 red version and this looks exactly like mine from my prespective. And for those stainless steel handle, I will most likely need to buy new in future anyway. No need to buy whole machine. Also, in last year (maybe 1,5 year) as I own mine, machine works fine and taking all my messing arround as i tend to buy new coffe's all the time lol.

i did a gagguino conversion which cost a little over 120 EUR to do (so a bit more than the price of a PID). of course doing that is not going to be for everybody, but i've now got a little machine with a PID, built in scales, pre-infusion with pressure control, flow profiling and pressure profiling. basically a smaller and way cheaper Decent DE1.

Eh, that’s a few $ spring and 5 min. Change in materials is much more significant. I guess the materials won’t change taste tho.. I just went from 9 to 6.5 and while the first shot tasted noticeably better imo.. more extracted. But I’m using a bottomless filter as well of course.
Gaggia definitely missed the opportunity to make some great updates, instead it's basically the same.. My list of dream changes: 1. Add an extra 3cm reservoir underneath to house a decent drip tray that spans the full footprint of the machine 2. Include a clear plastic container that slides into the underneath reservoir to catch drips 3. Do away with the existing drip tray and vent tube and replace it with a single plastic part that a) has an integrated tube to catch the vented liquid and b) covers all sides (back, left, right, bottom) to prevent drips from escaping the drip tray
I just bought the Evo pro for $400 USD in the U.S, there really was no other option as good in the price range maybe besides the $130 more flair manual machine while the bambino (I’ve heard) has worse shot quality.
I was expecting 1) higher clearance under brew group 2) PID control brew temp 3) brew pressure gauge w/ easy adjustment 4) larger dip tray..... Otherwise meh, not interested at all.
Can you remove the water tray? I want to buy a proper expresso machine but I need a machine that I could fit a 32 oz thermos flask under the brew head for winter snow removal work. I don't care about fancy espresso art as I just want nice tasting liquid heat. It's an amazing sensation to have that heat creep down your back when there's a -20 bellow wind chill @ 3:00 AM while you're out shoaling & salting the sidewalks . I could transfer liquids but I prefer not to do so after I screwed around with the act of transferring liquids with a mini blender for protein shakes, I eventually grew a spine and bought myself a vitamix blender which I wish I did earlier because a single pitcher is able to blend 2 shaker bottles worth of fluid, and thanks to the power of the blender I don't even have to mess around with dish soap, I just use hot water and the blender turned up to max-speed is enough to clean out the blending pitcher.
The group WAS solid bras, but they skimped on the plating. Also, anodisation costs more and is a very hard coating, so this marketing BS, that is more resilient to scale buildup is just marketing to justify the lower production cost. If you can, get the 2019 version. Trust me.
You mean you'd prefer plating on the group? I must admit, I never saw the plating as an issue. I do much prefer the solid stainless portafilter though. Re the boiler coating, I think time will tell. Personally, I'd probably go for the 2019 version while it's still available - due to the price difference, and I'm a cheapskate 😆.
So basically no difference in 30+ years since this model was released. At least they got rid of the panarello steam wand. In 30 years they'll add a PID, or a pressure gauge, or a larger non-aluminum boiler, or pre-infusion. I'm amazed that people still buy the GCP and not a far superior but similarly priced machine like the Lelit Grace (which has all of these features and morel). And don't start with the silly 57mm vs 58mm argument. It's negligible compared to the other differences.
"What Did They Change" Not enough. I turned my 1995 "Gaggia Espresso" into a "Gaggioino." I bought the parts to turn the "Espresso" into (basically) a Classic Pro. I was hoping I could find the new boiler and head, but they were available yet for sale. So I bought a new boiler (mine was pretty well used) a grouphead for the Classic Pro, the solenoid and pressure release tubes. I now have a Classic Pro inside the Espreeso body. If Gaggia wants to lure me into buying a new machine they need to come out with something better than I can build by using one of their old machines. 🙂 Gaggia needs to up their game. This is what they're going to be competing with from DIY'ers and others... ua-cam.com/video/d_aGi2L2fbs/v-deo.html
Ooh you did the Gagguino mod? How are you finding it?. Re Gaggia needing to up their game, I understand what you're saying, and I wish they'd at least put a 9 bar spring in the new one (as has happened in North America only, I think something to do with Whole Latte Love). Cheers Kev
@@Coffee_Kev I love it. I don't have to stand there and watch over the brewing process anymore. If I need to do something real quick, I don't need to worry it will overflow my cup. Everything is totally automated. 🙂 It does far more than what I need. The next version won't be using a Nextion display. So if you're even THINKING about doing it, I'd wait until it comes out.
@@MaxDamage182how do you know for sure? No one seems to be mentioning this in Europe, only the US. It’s possible only the US version has 9 bar OPV (or possibly only the Whole Latte Love version, as they often negotiate machine modifications).
OPV is at 9 bar in North America, I believe it's something Whole Latte Love insisted on. Unfortunately as far as I'm concerned, the EU models are all as they were previously where the OPV spring is concerned.
The inside of the boilers in the 2019 version are absolutely terrible. Large particles of metal come away from the inside. Obviously terrible for your health and also blocks the group head. Very common. The reason they've changed it is because they have seen how bad it is
@@MaxDamage182 Why has it then been the hottest selling pro-consumer 58mm expresso machine for all these years if it's so terrible. Mine is FANTASTIC. A BEAST. A TANK. I make espresso 6 times a day. Every day.
@@MacheteMambi It's a good machine but the pre 2019 one is better quality. Bigger/better solenoid and better quality boiler. There's absolutely no debate that the boiler on the 2019 is terrible. Chunks of metal come off it and it blocks up with metal. Why do you think that's basically the only significant change they have made?? Coincidence ? No. I have repaired so many of these machines and I also see multiple a day coming back for repairs and it's always the same problem. The boiler falling apart internally. I wouldn't drink from one. sponsored video recommends upgrading to the new version what a surprise

@@Coffee_Kev solid portafilter is a plus, but most get bottomless anyway
So basically no difference in 30+ years since this model was released. At least they got rid of the panarello steam wand. In 30 years they'll add a PID, or a pressure gauge, or a larger non-aluminum boiler, or pre-infusion. I'm amazed that people still buy the GCP and not a far superior but similarly priced machine like the Lelit Grace (which has all of these features and morel). And don't start with the silly 57mm vs 58mm argument. It's negligible compared to the other differences.
For the the Lelit Grace's cost, i can buy two GCP evo. So it's not similar priced, It's double the price.
"What Did They Change"
Not enough. 🙂
Gaggia needs to up their game. This is what they're going to be competing with from DIY'ers and others...

Ooh you did the Gagguino mod? How are you finding it?.
Re Gaggia needing to up their game, I understand what you're saying, and I wish they'd at least put a 9 bar spring in the new one (as has happened in North America only, I think something to do with Whole Latte Love).
Cheers
Kev
@@Coffee_Kev I love it. I don't have to stand there and watch over the brewing process anymore. If I need to do something real quick, I don't need to worry it will overflow my cup. Everything is totally automated. 🙂
It does far more than what I need. The next version won't be using a Nextion display. So if you're even THINKING about doing it, I'd wait until it comes out.
Could definitely use a bigger boiler. Steaming milk is pathetic

Higher price due to covidflation.. don't kid yourselves... a few trillion new currency moving about causes prices to rise eventually..
Nothing significant. Still need to void the warranty by opening it up and change the opv spring. 👎🏼 For me
No, they are changed from factory now. This review fails the mention this key piece of data.
@@nsjohn130 only for to US. In Europe we are f*cked as usual.
because that change is only in the US @@nsjohn130
Still OPV isn't set to 9 bar? Still no PID? Still no glass clearance?
Stupid outdated machine im amazed anyone buys that
OPV is at 9 bar. He didn't mention it though
@@MaxDamage182how do you know for sure? No one seems to be mentioning this in Europe, only the US. It’s possible only the US version has 9 bar OPV (or possibly only the Whole Latte Love version, as they often negotiate machine modifications).
It turns out it is indeed an exclusive change to North American model only
OPV is at 9 bar in North America, I believe it's something Whole Latte Love insisted on. Unfortunately as far as I'm concerned, the EU models are all as they were previously where the OPV spring is concerned.
tatty whaaaaaaaaat
In other WORDS they've gone WOKE and stopped some of the additional craftsmanship. STICK TO THE 2019. THIS IS A MARKETING SCAM with less quality
I use the pre 2019 one and I have just upgraded the steam arm.
@@MaxDamage182 sounds like maybe the new one is on par with pre-2019 in that respect then. might be worth a go?
@@lurklingX It does lol. I think the boiler will be a little better. I have seen older ones with corrosion in the boiler but it's a lot less
Pid is so overrated! Gaggia is the best the way it is
