  • Naz recounts the difficulties experienced growing up without a clear sense of gender identity. Born female, Naz describes relating strongly to boys from around the age of five, and feeling like a tomboy, whilst also having “girlie days”. This fluidity caused Naz some confusion. As Naz matured, sexually, a decision was made to “come out” as a lesbian, but Naz still felt that in terms of their identity, things were not quite right.
Naz identified with others from the LGBTQ community at school and forged some strong and lasting friendships, but still felt marginalised by pupils in the mainstream.
Naz eventually met a partner who identifies as a transgender woman, and after conceiving a child together, Naz felt a sense of rejection by some of the gay community.
Naz talks about the emotional impact their grandfather’s death triggered and how drinking became a coping mechanism for dealing with the loss.
Naz ultimately found true happiness with a partner who identifies as nonbinary, after coming to identify as nonbinary themself.
Naz talks about experiencing alcoholism in reverse in the sense that their drinking was heavier at the beginning than it was towards the end.
Naz offers a sensitive retelling of a journey of self-discovery, encompassing a trial-and-error approach to recognising one’s gender, sexuality and personal identity in a confusing world.
Naz goes on to express gratitude for recovery and for the thriving friendships made in sobriety, which once seemed so elusive.
