- Whistling Down the Wire is a 1976 album released by Crosby & Nash, the second of the duo's three album deal with ABC Records. David Crosby and Graham Nash left a potential CSN&Y reunion to record this album, leaving the other half of the quartet to form The Stills-Young Band and release Long May You Run.
The album was remastered and re-released on CD in 2000, but was out of print for many years. It was recently made available again as part of MCA's new manufacture on-demand process. 1 Track listing 2 Personnel 3 External links 4 References

This is one of my favorite pieces ever written as a songwriter. My music took 2 yrs to finish.. and then, on the road, David & Graham wrote the lyric in 20 minutes in the back of a limousine? Both David & Graham loved this record.. enough to let it be the single from this album. Alas, Croz wouldn't 'ok cutting a verse to bring the single in under 3:40…& radio format, then, was stern. So, Croz scuttled a hit, maybe:)
Craig Doerge Beautiful music! From an album that is up there with RLJ's "Pirates" ... The music and lyrics fit perfectly; did you have any preconceived theme that you were writing to, and if so, did C&N match it correctly?
I absolutely love this song and will be on my playlist at my funeral....It's one of the most well written, beautiful songs I've ever heard. I was lucky enough to see all of the band perform it a Concord Pavilion in Concord back in the late 70s... Keep on writing these great songs....
Craig, this song should have been a major hit. With all of the hard feelings that David and Graham seem to have now,it's doubtful they will ever record as a duo again. I think this song should have been the one they are remembered for.
Loved your work on The Pretender, esp. the first track (I forget the title at the moment).
Beautiful song, Craig. Years ago I made myself a T-shirt with "music is my life"
Just heard the news about David. He was a musical hero of mine, watched him low then rise above his demons. If I can imagine a heaven he's sailing his sailboat to the stars. Watching him sing his songs I don't think of anyone who played and sang with his spirt flying. Thank you Fat Albert for all those shows, all those songs that helped me thru my struggles. I will miss your harmony. The first time I saw him at the Ripley in Philly he was getting of j his bus and I was like a teenage fan yelling his name. He turned and looked and flashed the peace sign. "You always been walking"
In 56 years, I still need to hear a vocal chemistry better than this, ... there’s none.
Try Mapache (LA band). Kinda ''similar'' vibe.
Simon Garfunkel??
The BeeGees
still a favorite after all these years
Been looking for this song for so long, had this album as a kid. Spent a good portion of my adult life searching for this song. Out of the Darkness now.
Beauty!
This must be one of the most beautiful ballads of all time. Why this wasn't insanely successful is beyond me. Great song, Craig, with lyrics to match. Loved it then, love it now.
thank you for giving of your talent to Graham David, Stephen, and Neil.
This beauty takes the breath away. While healing the soul.
Probably one of the greatest songs I have ever heard. Always a fav. I have loved the greatest songs from the greatest songwriters. This - in my opinion - is among them. Well done great X 🙂
still brings tears to my eyes!
I love this. I just lost both of my children as well as my husband. This makes me feel happy, finally.
Thank you, mr Crosby (August 14, 1941 - January 18, 2023)
I cry EVERY TIME I hear this absolutely amazing beautiful song
Incredible song!
Be the light or love will fade away!
If anyone in the future wants to know about Graham Nash and David Crosby as a duo, they need to listen to this song and Southbound Train. Lots of other good stuff but those two songs stand above the rest, in my humble opinion.
I know it's a matter of taste but I'd definitely add songs like "Carry Me" or "Bittersweet"!
When They sing “Here in the light” I become silently blissful. A great composition and performance by the lads.
Wonderful song...timeless
RIP David Lindley. You inspired. You are missed.
RIP Lindley. Great performer.
Wonderful Song...pretty vocal work..one of my favourites
Not to sound morbid, but I have left instructions for this version of "Out of the Darkness" to be played at the memorial service when I transition out of this life.
David Lindley played with Jackson Brown on his Late for the Sky, The Pretender and Live albums too, incredible slide guitar work...possibly the most underated guitarist in the history of rock
I actually met Jaskson Brown at the airport in Arizona. He left his umbrella and I had the honor to give it back to him, and he called me back stage. What a wonderful experience.
Great song and great album
T up
great pièce of music...love tais song for sach long time....
Such a beautiful song....
Lindley - an amazing performer. This was one helluva band C&N played with back in the day.
"Be the light or love will fade away..." Truer than ever at this time when crazy ideologies are dividing us so foolishly.
Here, in the dark, the dusty light is fading.
The lonely night of waiting is passing the point and missing the mark.
Be the light, or love will fade away.
Here, in the shade, the leaves of change are falling down, slowly trying to reach the ground, to touch the earth and turn around.
Be the light, or love will fade away.
Out of the darkness, suddenly, my body can take a breath.
I'm coming out of the darkness.
Finally, my soul can take a rest.
Here, in the light, a lazy mist is lifting, and the sands of time are slowly shifting into the glass, with the hours that pass.
Be the light, or love will fade away.
Out of the darkness, suddenly, my body can take a breath.
I'm coming out of the darkness.
Finally, my soul can take a rest.
Great album man

here's another Crosby Nash gem from same era - Taken At All - ua-cam.com/video/zCeyseI_7cU/v-deo.html
Listen to about 2:50 and tell me that is not the same sort of country piano soul that you find in Manassas "Colorado" These guys alll were on the same page artistically, they just couldn't get along. On the one hand, it might be a good thing. Perhaps Crosby and Nash were more deep and existential, while Stills was all about Folk.
