Van Life at a Hospital (pt. 2): Dad's Recovery in the ICU
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 сер 2024
- This is part 2 of my Dad's recovery in the hospital after battling cancer, 2 major surgeries, and septic shock resulting from infection. I also manage to completely move out of my apartment (in Calgary) and back into the Van.
Van-living allowed me to be close to Dad and help him every day at the hospital. I am so blessed!
The end of this episode reveals a teaser to my summer road trip through the Rocky Mountains on my way to Haida Gwaii (British Columbia). Stay tuned for more in a future video!

life is so precious…👍
This is so true. We only get one life. One body. Take care of it and live life to the fullest :)
So glad to see major improvements from your dad in this one - you’re such a great story teller!
Thanks Brian :)

Your Dad is a fighter! I'm so glad you are there to support his recovery
He really is SO STRONG. Thanks Frank!
So glad to see your Dad improving. First class editing on this video.
Thanks John. Editing this beast took a bit of work! Now I'm back onto the more fun videos again :)
Glad your Dad if getting better!!
Me too, thank you!
And it's time to change the tires again. Your dad is fortunate to have you to support him like you did. You will never know all you did to help him recover. I hope you are all continuing to do well.
Thanks Robert. The bonds of family love are strong here :)
Very happy for your Dad. He seems to be an old school values fighter.
He really is. I had no idea how strong he was until this all happened. Luckily his hard work and positive attitude has paid off!
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod glad you see it. You have too, deep within, no doubt.
Same clothes, so what
I said that all the time, glad to see your dad’s doing better
Yeah, no one really cares that much anyways, do they? LOL. I'll change my clothes when they start to smell LOL
It made my heart happy to see your dad moving his hands and making gestures. And it reminded me once again how amazing the human body and mind are. Still sending you positive thoughts and love!
Isn't it amazing? I love what our bodies are capable of. Much love!
After the rain ...the sun... 😀 So happy for you !
SO much sunshine! It's like day and night between this video and the new one I just posted :)

Oh Kira- I'm so happy for you, your Dad and family. You've been in my thoughts often. I wish I'd sent a message ages ago when I wanted to tell you I live on HG! You've done such a great job caring for your Dad. I hope you were here while the weather was amazing. ATB.
You live on HG!???! That is wonderful. What a gem of a place. I need to go back there someday
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod Yes! Please do and let me know. We can have an adventure! Keep warm, winter is very early this year!

Glad for the positive trend in your dad's health, Kira! I'm sure he's grateful for your love and care! Take care; be well!
Me too. What a relief! Much love to you! Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
First, heartwarming to see your dad getting better. Second, love the shots at the end. I'd love to see more about your summer travels. Take care.
Thanks Blazer. I've just posted a new video about some of my travels this summer. There's more to come! :)
You're a very strong woman.
Thanks Neal
Great to see how quickly he's improving. I'm sure the time you've spent with him was a big motivator.
Great to see some of the summer, I'd almost forgotten it already, especially after last weekend's flash snow storm!
He's apparently 1 year ahead of schedule. I think whatever we did as a family helped a great deal. We are so blessed! Oh man...stupid snow and cold! haha.
So happy to see vast improvements for your Dad!
Thank you Darling :) He's a fighter!
It makes me so happy to see your dad's health improving Kira! I can definitely relate to the emotional turmoil and stress this situation causes. My father has congestive heart failure (pretty severe one). It's been a two years back and forth to the hospital. 2 strokes, 3 complete heart stops, special medical care. Amazingly, he is still alive, and he can still walk (slowly), talk, he can't read anymore and he forget things.... and really, the battle is only downhill from here. I have started to cope with my fathers unavoidable passing... But with that being said, my prayers are with your dad Kira, because he can still fight for his life, he can still win over cancer. And I can't wish for anything else than you having your dad in your life.
That's awful. I've heard some similar stories from other people lately about their family members. It's so tough. Thanks for sharing.
Glad your Dad is getting better. He and you are still in my daily prayers.
Grace, mercy, prayers, healing and all the Fruits and Gifts of the Spirit for your Dad.
Thank you WarriorKnitter. The prayers have worked. Dad is doing amazing :) Much love
Wow. So good to hear good news regarding your dad and a huge sense of relief for you and your family. It’s nice to see you able to enjoy road tripping to celebrate your life as we all celebrate the life extension your dad has been blessed with. Still sending prayers your way 🙏. Enjoy the rest of your summer.
Thanks Brian. Yes, I love that you see my road trip as a way to celebrate my life. It's so fitting. Dad continues to do well. Thank you for your kind words. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season!
Excellent work Kira I have been though a similar situation. too late now but sometimes they will let you stay in the parking lot at the hospital. you are a great daughter to your dad he will remember it forever. When he thanks you, you can thank him back, for the opportunity to be awesome.
I'll have to ask about staying in the parking lot next time. Thanks, Richard :) Take care.
You are so very good at putting these together. You’re a very special person and an inspiration 🌲❤️🌲
Thanks Mari. I am addicted to filming and editing I think lol
🙏🙏🙏prayers for your dad’s recovery
Thank you. The prayers are working :)
All the best with your dad and beyond. Stay strong.
Thank you mecreyes
You're a wonderful storyteller.
Thanks, Grumpy. I appreciate that :)
I really enjoy the calming vibe of your videos. I thank Foresty Forest for introducing me to you....I am sure you thank him too for bringing so many viewers to your channel. But you do a beautiful job at weaving a storyline and the voice over is done very well. I really enjoy your videos. You are darn beautiful too...I'm sure you know that too lol! Anyway glad to hear your dad is doing better.... power to you and him.
Thank you so much. I put a lot of work into my videos. Sometimes I enjoy it and it doesn't feel like work, though :) Very nice words :) Take care :)
Amazing to see your father improve so much! Happy to see him doing better. You're a kind soul, Kira. The landscapes at the end were breathtaking. I'm very jealous of where you live! Nothing like that here in Ontario. Take care!
Awesome Kira so happy for you and your dad.
Thank you Joseph!
Big Big smiles, it was a rough summer, hope your fall and winter are much better. Thanks for sharing your journey.
It was such a crazy summer for sure. Very low lows and high highs! The highs are in the video I just posted ;)
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod Indeed, very good video, I enjoy seeing the simple things in daily life, scenic views and holsome simple meals, maybe highs are that much higher because of the lows. anticipating your next video. Health and happiness.
My prayers
Thank you Syed, I think they've worked!
GO Kira! THANKS SO MUCH for sharing and happy your Dad is much better! ALL THE BEST to you, family and friends! Reminds me so much of my daughters' standing with their Mom for years of treatment :) Take care and Cheers from down south! Stay warm now that its Fall :)
Thanks Marty. Much love to you and your daughters (and their Mom).
Glad to hear that your dad is improving. Still sending my prayers. I hope you're taking good care of yourself during this stressful period. ❤
Please keep the videos comming.
I will! I just posted a new one ;)
Been there. Done that. Know that you don't know. Allow the Docs to do their thing. Make the decisions that have to be made when they have to be made. Don't waste time agonizing over things that may never happen. Sometimes sepsis can cause something of a remission in cancer. Once a decision has been made and the day has past, don't keep carrying it with you. Leave it in the past. Van life teaches us to travel lightly. Not all good things are gift wrapped. Some good things come wrapped in mud.
WOW l hope no one go through what you went through and l am so proud of you.
Thank you. So many people do go through this and worse. It breaks my heart. But makes us stronger people :)
Thank you for sharing this very personal story (the way you presented this was very compelling). Amazing (and very encouraging) that your Dad is doing so much better. He certainly must appreciate you being there for him, and your help with his recovery.
Keep up your jogging...it's great stress relief....best wishes....
Good advice. I keep stopping. I really need to start up again :)
I've been away from your vlogs for a while, due to life consuming every minute I have. However on my first trip in three yrs back home to my hometown on Penrith due to COVID-19 I wake confused at 4am to a notification of your father and your journey through his early days of recovery from serious illness and recovery. I find that I'm moved to tears by your story, thank you. It's a beautifully made story.
I do hope the next update we get is a good one as it's now 30th Oct and the story ended in Mid July:(
Thank you for watching my story, Mike. The next update is a fantastic one. It's like night and day. Although it's still in the summer from August, but eventually I will catch up to the present time :)
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod thank you for the personal response:)
A lovely update, love hearing from you! Hope all is well.
Likewise, Daniel! Good to hear from you. Hope you had a wonderful summer of paintball :)
So happy your dad is recovering and I know having you there for him was a huge help!
Thanks Jo. I think having a strong community/family around does wonders in and of itself. So glad we were able to be there for him.
Happy Ending. Nice. :)
Very very happy ending. And even happier new beginnings - I've just posted a new video ;)
That's SO great!
He's doing so much better now. I can't believe how far he's come.
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod That's awesome!!
I don’t understand why, but packing up my van after I’ve stayed somewhere for a while is so much harder than simple day-to-day van life. It’s almost easier to just stay in the van! Lol So glad your dad’s doing better ❤ and wearing the same clothes every day is not relevant to anyone who matters. sorry so much to say that I ran out of room to contradict your negative million dollars comment 😅
Yes packing up and moving here and there is a damn ton of work. I need to learn my lesson!
What do you call a witch on a beach ? A SANDWITCH ! 😂🤣😃
HAHAHA. Happy belated Halloween Rich!
Sending Aloha 🏝🐋⛵️
Aloha! It's cold in Canada. Was thinking of coming for a visit ;)
@9:52 . . .scuuuze me but y'all are allowed doggos in AB hospital ICU?!
So fabulous if that is the case. Uhhm if you truly luv the rain we gotcha
covered girl West Coast - Salish Sea BC from Oct through May
(at the least) haha.
So glad your Pops is on the mend (plus that was 3+ months prior so hoping he is WAY better at this point). He is fortunate to have had all such supports incl fact we live in CA with healthcare of sorts.
Normally dogs aren't allowed in the ICU but we had spent so much time there and made friends with the nurses who "looked the other way." haha.
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod Outstanding to hear. Just very unusual esp. in an ICU setting given how controlled the environment is. I've heard that it 'can' happen if a person is believed to possibly not be surviving or if deep depression sets in and it is known that one greatly misses their animal. We absolutely need to allow so much more of such within our stringed N.American hospitalization/long term care landscape.
❤❤❤
Much love Tater!

Really hope your father gets well, and that you can celebrate a nice Christmas with homemade caramellows and turtles 🐢
I love that you remember that candy-making episode lol!
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the first video you posted of your dad's health, because I think I remember him being in that video and you guys having a great time in the run up to Christmas. Really hope it goes well for all of you, and that it can be a "koselig" holiday with fire in the Jøtul fireplace & homemade snacks. "Gode tanker gode ord, skaper lykke på vår jord!"

Yay, Renay!
1:03 Sunshine, I tell you this every year.. Get rid of that scissor jack.. They are dangerous at the best of times.. a small "black max" jack from Wallmart, or a small bottle jack is a lot better, and safer.
My best friend in the whole world, just got new that her dad has cancer again. Its spread this time, and he is awaiting treatment. He is in Saskatchewan, and she is here in Courtenay ( my neighbour now). Her being in pain with all this, breaks my heart.
12:43 Island Bound.. sadly not my Island.. yet
You're so right. I really do need to buy a better jack. siiiigh.
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod I care a lot about you.

Yay, Roy!
Never torque your tires in the air ... the full weight of the vehicle needs to be on them.
Good point. Thanks, I'll remember for next time :S
click bait like that is uncalled for these days... especially regarding someone's health.... glad everyone is alright ...
Umm.... We almost lost my Dad... :/
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod There is always someone that has to say something ridiculous.
@@KiraandtheSurvivalPod Will he make it ? You already know he has.
@@melissav3244 Did you watch it or just come here to offend a distraught family? Every day they were asking themselves, “will he make it?” So your assuming it’s clickbait is presumptuous. While we’re handing out unsolicited advice, try asking yourself: does this comment need to be made? If so, does it need to be made now? By me? Is there a possibility that my advice is wrong due to a limited perspective?
I could feel the relief as you shared the delivering Dads stuff. I’m sure he can’t wait to play guitar with you again :)
My very best to you, family first, great job!

He's been able to start playing base! I'm going to make a trip down back to Lethbridge soon. Thanks Rick and take care :)
