Even though you might not agree with the priest, you cannot deny that his views on love are very interesting and the anime executed them perfectly... One of my fav episodes for a reason!
Death is love doesn't mean you have to be dead to love... Like how close Thors came to it while he was alive... On the contrary, goal of Thors and now Canute is seeking Love while still alive... They are seeking the alternative, they both seek Love as god wanted but in a different way... Both following gods plan and at the same time rebelling against God...
I love the way this show handles religious themes, it both criticizes and praises while handling religion without any personal bias/agenda for what it is/was in history...
and both ways are wrong in my opinion, Thors became pacifist regardless of the situation, and now Canut becomes a man that convinces himself he can sanction any death or battle as long he is the one giving meaning to it... Canut fell away further from God ... and abandon him completely by saying he is just gonna build his own paradise on earth.... which is naive ... same as the idea of Thors and Thorfin going to Vinland ... a place that has no wars or famine in it ... as long there are people there will be corruption in one way or another no matter the place or no matter how many countries or people you eliminate.
@@adamkhalid917 So what's the alternative to what Canute is trying? Just let the world go to shit because you believe there's no redemption?
@@girish9242 I think thats the point of Vinland Saga, there isn't a "good" alternative, be a pacifist a you get yourself killed, be a viking and breed violence that end destroying you, the only "good" way is just follow your ideals and not bretraying them like Thors didn't betray is pacifism even in the worst of the situation and now Canute giving meaning to his battles.
@@girish9242 the alternative it seems according to the manga so far is somewhere in between…. Which is also something hard to accomplish… because you need to be peaceful as much as you can but not totally a pacifist…. Also you need to stop eliminate every small potential threat because you might find a way to negotiate and find peace before a bloodbath …. If i could put it in the simplest way, only fight those who intend to harm you by defending yourself/family/community… otherwise killing another is hard to be justified
@@girish9242 It's up to you. It's a story that explores ideas, not a story that forces a philosophy onto you. There' pros and cons to Thor's humble pacifism, and pros and cons to Canute's arrogant utilitarianism.
*Canute be like: I'm the Main Character Now!*
I feel like so many characters are taking the spotlight from Thorfinn 😳
@@teddymecheto this the askeladd and Canute show
Thorfinn got nerfed
@@teddymecheto well you will realise why thorfinn isn't getting the spotlight by the end of the season

I don't think its death in the literal sense but more of a metaphor. The priest is talking as if to say that Death is the closest human beings can get to showing true, unconditional, indiscriminate love because in death we want nothing, we need nothing, we will not value one's life over another and so we will have no enemy - as Thors was attempting to practice.
The love that the priest seeks is a love that does not look for something in return. Is the biblical love that will offer the other side of the face to the enemy. That's why he was so interested in the story about thors that refused to use a sword because he didn't wanted to hurt askelad's group.
The love that canute was seeking with the religion was a substitute for his father's love. The speech about how he doesn't want father's love anymore isn't only about god, but it regards his father's acceptance too. The switch that flipped in this episode is that he no longer needs his father or any other substitute's love. Men (including his father) does not have love in their hearts and so he will create a paradise in earth where men will learn again how to love.
This comment perfectly explains the priest's philosophy. Love is discrimination, even if you don't agree to what he's saying, you have to understand his point of view. Because, in a way, what he said makes sense. Most people would never love another that's not a relative or a partner. That's the discrimination part.
I think it’s important to think about the time period when considering the priests views. We have a totally different view of the world cause we don’t live in war torn countries but the priest has seen so much violence he’s basically given up on humans being capable of any good so the only way a person can display true love is by dying. Flawed logic but it makes sense considering what he’s seen
Yep an also in that period when missionaries went up north , a lot of them werent following the canons of the church , to adapt the faith to the region , so having somebody like a rogue and jaded priest that has his own view or interprets the canons and the scriptures in his own manner is totally possible ... Canons became a lot more strict and heretical thought ( not following the canon ) more persecuted during and after the Crusades
his views make no sense since jesus literally tells us to buy swords
@@houseofaction Jesus also died willingly for everyone else's sins, he died for the sake of others like Thors. In a way you could say he was "perfected" by death, his death is perhaps the most significant thing about him, hence the significance of the crucifix.
@@bibi_999 I don't love saying it, it is an actual fact. and i am 100% correct and i understand christianity perfectly
@@schmuck.on.wheels Jesus's sacrifice has nothing to do with the situation moreover jesus could't have been "perfected" by his death as scripture is clear he was BORN PERFECT. him being part of the trinity and all.
One of my fav episodes of the series
If you know the real history behind King canute then it was very obvious for us to know that canute's character was gonna end up being someone really great and exactly like this. His character had a lot of potential from the moment he was revealed and it lived upto every expectation. One of the best character development, some people say it was fast but its not. If you pay attention to canute's character from the very beginning, it was perfectly paced
One of the best episode fr
his on the same lvl as jesus come up crazyyyy fr
She be hating on that priest while he over there spittin’
Yeah spittin that bs 😭/jk
props to Canute's VA (Kenjo Ono) he subtly went from a princess' tone to Floch's tone
Canute’s change isn’t as baffling if you consider his upbringing and take his words towards Thorfinn as they are: he is a fairly instructed individual, so he has the knowledge to be strategist. He just didn’t have the ambition nor the confidence to step into that role, which is why he didn’t want to sign a treaty without the king’s authorization, for example.
This experience served to snap him out of his mindset and made him take the reins of his own life.
Clicked on this as soon as I saw it haha, truly one of the best episodes - the action, the talk of "love", the Prince's rejection of "salvation" in god's eyes and... the music!!
Thanks for taking us on this journey Teddy, rewatching this and seeing your reactions is a blast :')
And thank you for always watching and waiting for the reactions next few episodes are gonna be awesome!'
Welcome to the last quarter (give or take one episode) of Vinland Saga season 1. From this point on every episode is peak anime.
After every episode I was thinking wow this can't get better. Only for it to get better 🤣
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE LESSGO
This and the next one. Deep philosophy.
Canute the Boy has now become Canute the Man!
oh waiting for this episode for so long :D
Girl..how have you not known about the legendary Aimer. Also, the first outro 'Torches' (the anime version ) which is also the official version is available on Spotify.

This episode is a masterpiece; the conversation between Canute and Willibald changed my entire perspective for the rest of the series.

Favorite Vinland Saga song fosho.
Death is basically used as a metaphor here, an analog to what is a loving person
A god tier episode.
It's only gets better from here .
18:55 exactly, nice catch
The gamble made by Askeladd was successful. He has seen something in the prince the others did not. And, indeed, there was something suggesting he might change like that. His reaction against Thorfinn's taunts in ep. 13 told there was pride inside him, that he was not just a spoiled kid, as he seemed to be in ep. 12. His reaction against the doubts of the priest in ep. 15 showed that he has some strong ideals and he is able to defend them by words.
Now he reached his full potential, and become the best candidate for the man Askeladd was looking for: Someone able to get humankind out of the Age of Twilight he was speaking about in ep. 10, to ensure a new age of peace and prosperity.
To give absolute meaning to what the Priest means by "love". It is when something treats everything equally without alterior motives. That is why the snow analogy can help to understand what is meant by "love". The snow covers everything it lands on. It does not make choices as to what or whom shall feel the cold. Death is like that too as the corpse doesn't make choices to what will happen to it so long as it exists. For man to have "love" is impossible, but Thors and Canute decided to reach for what is closest to it. Through the idea of unification even though there approaches are different.
15:36 come on teddy it's a serious moment 😂😂😂
Basically in simple words Floch took over the prince
Historical Canute is known as Cnut (or Knut) the Great, one of the greatest Danish king of the time.
This was an inevitable awakening.
Its also what Thors wanted. or VInland, per se. I land without battles, without slaves, without war. Paradise on earth
The're talking about the concept of universal love that jesus is said to have. Love all equally without discrimination. To only love one over someone else is discriminating someone else of love. Hence bias.
I've always found this to be a really interesting view on the biblical context of love and its relation to god.
They mention here how to be truly indicative of Love, you must essentially be uncomplacent to the world around you, to be completely and simply implicit to the world; and they also say that God took love away from man because of Adam & Eve eating from the forbidden tree. So if love is to be implicit, and making a choice to do something God had told them not to do is Sin, and therefore separate to love, then this interpretation simply states that when God gave us free will, he also took away his love from us.
A lot of Christians seem to think God giving us free will was a good thing, something he did out of love for us; but through this interpretation, giving us free will was punishment. It was separating us from the capability of his love, because with a free thinking mind, with opinions and unique thoughts, you cannot love.
This is exactly why Canute is so angry. God asks Christians to seek his love. To live their life constantly trying to be close to him, and to truly understand Gods love; yet, God will not let man reap the benefits of his love until they die, because only after death can they be implicit like the snow, and like the mountains, and like the sky. To Canute, this feels pointless. There's no point to leaving man to suffer on earth, just so they can endure trial after trial, if at the end of the day you won't know if you earned God's love until you die.
So Canute still believes God exists, he still believes God made us and put us here to endure trial after trail, but he rejects the whole notion of earning his love. As he says "If you will no longer give us salvation, then, with our own hands, on this earth, we shall create our own paradise."
A good argument, I'll give you that. But I believe that you forgot a very important detail. If a person does not have free will then he isn't capable of real love. If all you have is a role and a sense of duty, then you aren't really choosing to love unconditionally, nor are you really capable of choosing to follow this way of life and being. Because in the end you are simply a duty bound existence that doesn't know better nor are you capable of even imagining another way of life.
By giving us free will, he essentially gave us the right to choose if we want to live as faithful Christians, or if we want to try and live our lives in another way. Canute, ironically, is a better Christian than many others that proclaimed that they believed in God and wanted to do his binding. He, ironically again, proclaims that he will try to find meaning in this life on earth and try to build a kingdom of paradise on earth. He wants to become a true warrior that will make the lives of all his subjects better, more fair and to protect those that have to endure the hardships of the times they lived in.
In sort, Canute is doing what Christian faith's teachings are all about. To protect the weak, to love your neighbors and to try and live your life to the best of your ability without doing undue harm to those around you. Will he have to do bad things to bring about that change? Of course. But that's inevitable when living in those times.
Amazing right? The one that proclaims that he won't forgive the Father in Heaven is the one that walks the path closest to what the father actually wanted men to follow. I would love to see Canute after his death when coming face to face with God. He would tell him "I don't need your salvation! I did my best to create heaven on earth!" And God would tell him " Good job my boy! I'm so proud of you! You understood my intentions better than anyone!"
canute is also an idiot. scripture literally says that god is unchanging and it literally says he loves us unconditionally so him granting adam and eve free will would be by definition not a removal of his love. moreover free will existed before adam and eve sinned according to scripture
@@kpetalis absolute b.s and un totally counter to what scripture says.
Adam and Eve already had free will even before eating the fruit of wisdom
@@kpetalis You are assuming a lot about canute's character. He's not like that in vinland saga at all. And that wasn't the opinion of the OP, he was explaining the manga. Real love is not something here. There's only one love and it's bound to discrimination.
Yes love, the true one that is, is unconditional. The love we feel or give is tainted and not pure because we choose who to love, who to help unlike the true love the priest was telling Canute. Vinland Saga has taught me lessons and the answer I have been pondering on in my years as a Christian. Truly, this helps me answering a lot about love and how we should live our lives as “warriors.”
What a episode
10:50 Basically Ainz xd
Yeah what the priest is saying, is that true love is unconditional.
Familial love, intimacy, etc, are all conditional. We as humans have a real hard time loving something unconditionally. It's always tied to some liking of that individual or material.
However, to the creator - love is unconditional. When he pointed at the dead viking to say that's love, it's because humanity can only know love when we stop being humans. Because, he believes, we are incapable of divine "unconditional love".
Even Christian theology asserts that it is impossible to embody unconditional love on earth, we are flawed beings after all, all we can do is strive to pursue this unattainable state
This is what Askeladd is waiting.
i think he meant snow is love because it exists for everybody
Canute achieved a post-nut like clarity state
i promise episode 24 is my favourute one.

LIKEEE CANUTE SO MUCH, mostly in the manga 👀
Love the anime but bruh Canute hits so hard in the manga
Canute's been through a lot. Lost his father figure and had to watch a whole village get slaughtered.
No no Canute and Thorfinn are not related. Jarls rule some other area and king is other. Thorfinn is Nobel and Canute is Royal and yeah Canute is sort of second MC.
15:36 lmao
I liked the Prince's 'awakening' but then Thorfin's 'awakening' blew it out of the water.
The priest came up with death as an example of love because when you are dead you can't hurt others etc. An important thing to highlight is that he says death perfects a person. Not a living thing, just a person. That's because animals or plants don't have those negative feelings towards others like humans do. So death is the perfect example of unconditional love for humans because then all your emotions die. Also when the priest heard about Thors and how he defended his own ppl without killing others is a perfect example of that love the priest believes in. The priest doesn't see love as a feeling but rather an act towards the world and the things in it. Ofc you cant love everybody and everything with our own concept of love, but you can "love" everything and everybody with the priest's love. And thats why the priest was shocked when Canute hugged Bjorn bc that is the love they talked about just before. Canute doesn't love Bjorn as he loved Rangar, but acts like he does love him and that's the point.
Let's gooooo
I don’t fully agree with the priest but what a beautiful episode nonetheless. His argument is that love is pure and true purity is unobtainable by a living human being. In death you are pure because you do not have your personal biases, beliefs, and discrimination and more importantly you can not act up one those feelings. Canute is mad at this “truth” for good reason. It’s truly unobtainable, so how dare you ask us to pursue it. I personally believe that love in itself is 100% discriminatory, which is not a good nor bad thing. My disagreement lies with love having to be being pure. It is impossible for any emotion to be pure, but that does not make it any less “real” and valid, it actually makes it MORE real and valid imo.
Canute unlocked
لحظة تغير كنوت ١٨٠ درجة 🔥🔥
very nice reaction series. everyone here has in one way or another touched on the transition of canute from ignorant to enlightened. my only two cents here is to mention on maybe why it feels so sudden for a lot of us watching especially in north america. if im not mistaken and anyone could correct me here if im wrong, because this is technically done by a japanese author, certain story elements are going to be present due to cultural background. perhaps because of zen buddhist influences, there is tendency to treat the moments of realization as being rather sudden from our pov. the idea is that wisdom/enlightenment/etc. when achieved comes to the person instantaneously all at once. canute comes to understand the underpinnings of vinland saga's philosophy regarding true warriors, love, etc. in a single moment. also perhaps because of zen buddhism, there is the reliance of a master which guides this moment instead of scripture or doctrine, hence why ragnar and willibald were there to show canute the way.
all in all i cant wait to see more of your reactions. good luck.

I also didn't understand at first whan Canute's speech was about at the beginning, but he became a more likable character after this episode :)
Devil is a part timer reaction plss!!:)
What I got from the priests definition of love is the fullness of love is experienced by good and evil alike. That’s why he used the example of death, everyone who is born will experience death, whether you lived a good life of an evil life, death will find you. The same can be said about the sun, snow, and the wind are all love, the sun shines on good and evil alike, the snow falls on good and evil alike and the wind blows on good and evil alike…these forces aren’t discriminative. So, death does fit his example. But also on a side note, below these un-discriminative forces we have the law of karma or what goes around comes around…this brings about the law of justice, balancing out the law of love.
In the priest’s version of love, you cannot truly love one person unless you love everyone. (Like Christ.) And theoretically nobody can do that. Some people get close, like Thors.
Hello 30 secs huh
I think I finally understand the "love" thing in this episode. The priest is a nihilist, thus why is he always drinking. He is describing nihilism basically. But Canute actually ends up rejecting this and becomes an inspiration for purpose, as we see the priest himself is shocked later on.
I think the priest is just trying to preach about the love as he sees it in Christianity. God and Jesus are said to love everyone, no matter what they did, God is all loving, equally and can forgive all sins. Jesus died and took hell from his "enemies" and sacrificed himself. The priest is saying that true love is being able to embody the love that God and Jesus exhibit. Canute however, recognizes that humans can never attain this type of love because of the way that God has created humans. This causes Canute to reject God, reject his teachings, and reject God's paradise, instead choosing to create Humans own paradise here on earth.

I'm not American haha I didn't grow up in an environment with religion that's why I don't get it I think
@@teddymecheto Hi, thanks for your reply! I made you confused because of my bad English. I know you're not American. What I wanted to say was that you understand what they are talking about while some Americans don't. For me, they were not talking about religious belief but logical thinking, even though it was about Christianity. Americans seemed to reject or overreact to the word "discrimination". By the way, I'm Japanese. I love your reactions. 👍
@@kengo7273 aaah ok no worries then I misunderstood as well. I actually wasn't too sure when I watched it the first time too what they meant that's why I thought maybe you meant me hahah
I honestly think that this has nothing to do with religion. And I myself am not religious. It's the simple fact that priest thinks true love is when you love everybody equal, because that's the only way true peace can exist. When you only love and care about your own, you are discriminating. It's as simple as that. I mean even Canute turned against God. That's the whole point of this episode. Priest wasn't saying that Ragnar didn't love Canute, but that he loved only him, thus he discriminated against others for Canute. That's the problem.
HEEEY Hello, did you watch jujutsu kaisen?
I haveee unfortunately 😭
the priests view on love is heavily based upon romantic thinking, where god was viewed through nature and there was a subliminal quality to nature. He moves past that and says that due to nature treating all similarly and unconditionally, it is ‘love’ because the creation of god does not discriminate. At least how I viewed it.
Day 6 of asking teddy to react to Call Of The Night
11:52 Thankfully I don’t think you’re supposed to get on board … the priest is clearly depressed and a very cynical type of believer
I've noticed that when they say love, they use the word "Ai" which in Japanese denotes a deeper kind of love that is rarely used unless it's a very serious declaration of love. Most commonly tsuki is used instead to denote loving someone. But the priest always uses Ai to describe agape, or divine love, perfect love, that is impossible for humans to achieve. And fittingly, it's the only time you hear the word Ai in the series. That's why Askeladd's men said they'd never heard it before.
It's fine if you don't understand it, Christian theology is quite deep yet simplistic in a fashion and alot of people simply disregard things they don't understand.
10:55 I know that you aren't religious, but please don't take this stuff lightly. These concepts are deeply rooted in Christian culture. It's something you cannot just understand from watching an anime episode, it's something you have to read about for a long time and actually practice praying to get to know. And even the most devoted Christians aren't sure about this stuff. So when you compare it to something shallow like pagan nordic beliefs such as Valhalla, or the spiritual state "Nirvana". It's kind of offensive. Loving the reactions otherwise tho...
Yeah I really don't get it and it makes me roll my eyes because it's so far from my own beliefs and even modern Christianity. I have a weird relationship with religion and I try to not be offensive but sometimes my true feelings poke through
@@teddymecheto Yeah, I get that. I mean I grew up in the Balkans so I believe you can imagine what kind of culture it is, and how deep some things can be ingrained in the culture here. If you really cannot relate to it even a bit, then try to put yourself in the skin of an 11th-century Nordic prince. Cause Vinland Saga is full of these big questions, and I'll say this specific one about love will be relevant to pretty much the whole series. You'll enjoy it much better if you actually understand what are they trying to say.
I know a lot of diehard-fans won't see it this way, but Canute's sudden change is the one thing I always found to be awkward in this entire show, even after watching it multiple times. I haven't read the manga, so I don't know if this is something exclusive to the anime. While the change itself is not that outrageous, the pacing is off. You can't have such a big change in character in just a couple minutes, unless the character played a role from the beginning (for example Historia from AoT). I wish they gave it a little more time to make it feel organic.
I feel like you're too slow to get this
Thanks 😂👍
This episode was so boring, all that love talk make no sense, and I love deep philosophical talk, but this one I couldn't connect
