I think the "Don't use black for shading" Tip only applies to when you use color. If you're making a manga, then it's only black and white so of course using black makes sense, but when it comes to fully colored pieces, black makes it look muddy. I switched from black to blue or purple for colored shading a while ago and it looks much better. Just wanted to tell you my own experience
My grade 9 art teacher was definitely guilty of some of these, most specifically the last one I used to draw all the time in elementary school, from how to draw manga books and such, and then when I got to high school, my teacher constantly gave me shit for drawing anime styled art Now mind you obviously you should learn more fundamentals, I was pretty ignorant to that stuff, but she didnt bother telling me I needed to learn that stuff to draw stylized, so when she kept giving me bad marks I ended up quitting drawing entirely only to later decide I wanted to voice act, so I wanted to learn to draw, to animate, to voice act my work Discovered comics, and really started taking art seriously again only now I have to teach myself and keep the motivation to learn on my own, so its been tough. your videos have helped a lot though! you gave a recent tip about having better discipline with studying art, saving the video games and other entertainment for after the art is done, and Ive improved more in the last 2 months since that video than I feel like I did in the last 2 years
Great video bro, I’ve also heard art professors tell me that anime art isn’t real art. But bro congrats on graduating college. I recently graduated a few months ago. It’s inspiring to know that you were working on your manga while combatting school. I can’t say the same 😅. But thanks to your videos all I can do is start now.
Dude, you have no idea how much you're helping me. I've been in a block all of May, and your perspective on art has been a fresh one (I just ate your entire channel's worth of content lol) Anyways, you've inspired me once again to keep up the grind and get some results posted out here. Thank you!
Thank you for the reference bit, I often tell myself that referencing is "easy mode" and I got down on myself when I wasn't improving dispite my hard work.
I once talked to someone who told me practice drawing from imagination and I told them I don't know how to do that because I don't have a photographic memory and artist actually use references and it's normal... they didn't believe me, maybe because I was not great of an artist yet that they thought I was speaking nonsense.
Deliberate practice is the way. If I want to get better at drawing heads in front view. That's the only thing I'm practicing until I've become well at it. And then I'll move onto my next goal afterwards. Wash, rinse, and repeat until the fundamentals are on lock. Then challenge yourself afterwards. But that's easier said than done in this art life though lol.
Looking forward to more comic updates from you. If you don't mind, record yourself making a few comic pages for like an hour or two, just like Akihito Yoshitomi who is a Japanese published manga artist with a youtube channel.
Congratulations on graduation dude I definitely know the lackluster of graduating i graduated the start of covid so I didn’t have one 😂😂 but I can’t wait to see more of ya work this summer man 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Seriously that's the same art advise I heard when I was 11years old and at that time I believe it cause I wanna learn fast but now I'm 12 and I actually stop believing that six advise
Using black is great when working with manga cause... you know, it's the only one of two color options that you have, but when doing digital art or shading markers, etc. I've noticed a much more vibrant look when using a darker color than the base color for shadows, obviously in digital art this is made even easier.
You need reference for your mental library, but try without it to see what you do and don't know. Practicing more is not bad advice, but it's so vague it might as well be. You need fundamentals before you study your favorite artists. Talent helps for sure, but is not a necessity. Black in shading is preference and anime/manga art not being "real art" is bafoonery if you've ever opened up a manga of any accomplished artists. Good video!
I had an art teacher who wouldn't let us use lines. I ended up skipping that class a lot. Also talent is a myth...the blood sweat and tears are real baybee.
Congrats man I just finished my junior year of high school. I look forward to studying graphic design at a 2 year college. Also any advice for someone who wants to make comics while in school?
DDMark videos are always the best, DDMark my beloved is the best UA-camr 😈, Also, I have hard art block for around 2 weeks, is there anything you know I can do to fix it? :(
Normally teachers tell you to not use black for shading when you are going to use colors. Black might make your drawing look kind of muddy, therefore, they encourage you to use complementary colors.
Good video, like it as always :) I wanted to join your patreon so bad but then I suddenly got fired last week, lol. Hopefully I find a new job fast so I can support you (I also like the idea of a biweekly 1 on 1 call so that's also one of the reasons for me why I wanted to join you)
Practicing the right way and wrong way well how do I say this he..he recently i started practicing the right way and have had my biggest art improvement in 3 years over 3 months just by practicing the correct way 😅😅
To me i think there is no right or wrong way to do art i think it's just opinion and preference you think art is ok decent, some think it's good and some think it's bad i think there is nothing to improve on but if's also fine if some choose to listen improve or don't listen don't improve i think art is might to be just having fun it's not might to be taken seriously i just want to share my difference unpopular point of view take on art
Great video, but you've clearly misunderstood the advice "don't shade with black". Obviously in your case it doesn't apply, because it's b&w comic art. Where that advice becomes useful is any time you're making colours interact. A blue shading layer set to multiply will mostly blend and interact in a more interesting way with the underlying colour than the same layer shaded in black or grey. I think the reason why art teachers tell students to NEVER shade in black is to get them to try it out. It's not intuitive for us to think about values in colour. There are obviously situations where you shouldn't use blue, but 9/10 times it's the right colour to use.

It really depends, for example, Redline, It looks very good, and everything is shaded with pitch black

What your drawing device?
Normally teachers tell you to not use black for shading when you are going to use colors. Black might make your drawing look kind of muddy, therefore, they encourage you to use complementary colors.
I think when they say don't shade with black they mean not like a black airbrush over your characters skin to give it shading cus that looks amateur
How to draw dynamic poses
