During the 1972 Munich Olympics, in the middle of the night, I stumbled across what could only be called “novelty coverage” of a Team Handball contest being broadcast over the air. I’d never heard of the game (to Americans, “handball” is like Squash without rackets). After just a couple of minutes of watching, I was amazed.
The Olympics have been my only real chance to see the sport at all - and not many games were shown here in the US. Almost nobody has heard of the sport and I keep talking about it every 4 years. Over the years, I’ve managed to see more and more of the sport as the American broadcaster has needed material to fill several cable channels during The Games. With streaming finally coming of age, I’ll be able to see as much of the tournament as I like.
I’m 58 years old now so I’ll never actually be able to play the game, but I’ll still watch and promote it whenever I get the chance.

Started playing handball 33 years ago and ever since I wondered why Americans who complain about "low scoring football" dont like handball.
You need to be athletic AND fast, you need agility and a good eye-hand-coordination, it rarely has any breaks and its high-scoring.

Don't worry about the US too much, they are far from being good enough to win anything yet.
And as a frenchman that played handball when I was younger, let me tell i'd love to see new oponents coming up such as Canada and USA.
Handball has been a heavily European sport for decades, it's good seeing some fresh blood such as Egypt coming to contest against the best teams.

Yes, but they've been playing all of their lives. I'm from the UK and Christiansen was our best player for years. He had the same game time as his compatriots, but was a 6'3 super athlete. He was the only one capable of defence or attack against the European teams.
I'm also a big rugby fan and ex-player. We went to the US and Canada on tour and won every game, but the opposition hit hard, were more athletic and desperate to learn . The USA is a sleeping giant for sports, but coordination of a team is hard with a country that big.

  • @janandersen8735

The notion that James could become world class in 6 months is ludicrous, other than both sports use a ball, it is a totally different skill set. That said, the US could be really good at team handball, lots of not quite good enough for basketball could excel as could baseball players.

I remember before there was a selection of i think NBA player playing a exhibition match against some semi pro handball players. Needless to say handball players destroyed them, although it is absolutely possible for the USA to become a great handballing nation it would take some time and effort such as actually employing class trainers and players to select and train national team. Also quality comes from having a competitive handball leagues and support from the sponsors. Handball in rest of the world and especially Europe is played with a lot of passion and a long tradition.

    • @kloppskalli

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir Рік тому +1

@@lsmola The best the US could do, would be to introduce it in highschool (and earlier too) as an alternative to Basketball or Lacrosse or Football (American). Handball is fast paced, has multiple roles for different skillsets, quick player swaps and constant tempo - and it's physical too so you get a real workout not just for stamina but also strength. It's literally perfect for US schools to form teams and start casual competition there and let it grow organically to fuel bigger leagues with higher skill and price pools. Once the interest and a bit of money is there, higher profile coaches will come too. Ex European coaches could be a great starting point to get things rolling and share their experience.

    • @lsmola
      @lsmola Рік тому

@@Real_MisterSir I agree it would be great in the schools and for sure you could bring lots of experienced coaches and even players to the USA. But tbf in the grand scale of things there isn't much money in handball so unless it becomes wildly popular very fast it would stay on the school level. Most popular sports generate huge revenue which with handball isn't the case. It would be great for the sport if more countries become good at it. Just like football (soccer), USA team is no joke nowadays but it did take a lot of time, money and promotion of the sport to get it where it is today.

Words cannot describe how delighted I am that this video saw daylight. Handball is a very exciting sport because of the fast rhythm and the impossibility of a match ending in a nil nil draw. The United States were supposed to take part in the 2021 World Championship currently taking place in Egypt but withdrew because of bloody COVID. Personally I would have reached out to be part of a team, but I am too old at this point. Regardless, a very warm welcome to USA for entering the Handball World 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 #handballrules

Man, I just started playing Handball this year. I first followed Handball during last years World Championships, which happened to be running the exact time I was spending two months in Denmark for an aprenticeship and I knew the sport excisted, but up north (I am from Germany btw), I realized how huge of a deal handball is to Danes... Like: I literally saw houses decorated with Danish flags for the entire period the tournament was held. I turned on the TV and watched a match (even though I don't speak Danish, so I didn't understand anything the commentator said) and I was intrigued. We spend a lot of time jogging, doing Tabata and doing all sort of cardio training and it's been quiet fun (and by far the most intense training I ever did in my life), but I just wanna pick up a ball and play! Thankfully this Tuesday summer break is finally over, so we can get back into the local high school gym and actually start playing before the start of our season come September (I don't even know what position I am gonna be playing, though being left handed I would assume there aren't a whole lot of positions left to choose from) ... I am so damn hyped!

When we came back for lunch, the goals had been erected and there were two handball games in progress, one for the guys and one for the gals. The athleticism in both games was really impressive. The final should've been Norway:Spain. In the final though there was nothing to say, great match by Germany. And the 2007 semifinal was also kind of lucky with that weird referee descision in the last seconds. Yes, Germany has 3 world cups, 1 olympia and 2 euros, but 3 of those titles were 50 or more years ago and 2 of them nearly 15 years ago. As we saw at the world cup, right now Germany is not really a big threat for other teams when it comes to winning the title. I feel sorry for Gensheimer, he's probably the best German of the past 15 years and if I remember right he missed the Euro 16 due to an injury.

I'd say it's never gonna happen, but France started its handball career more or less 30 years ago and have since become the best handball nation ever. And the big competitions have been around since the 30s. But until the USA can compete with the likes of Denmark, Spain, France, Norway, Sweden and Croatia, there's a long way to go. So far only two non European countries were able to claim a medal in the world championships or Olympics, one of them was probably lucky (South Corea silver 1988) and the other was won with referees and a mainly European naturalized squad (Qatar silver 2015).

Games got pretty chippy. I probably would have gotten a few red cards. Having played American football and basketball all my life, it was really intuitive. Fun sport. If you've played ultimate frisbee or basketball, there are some similar passing patterns. The strategy seems to be nowhere near as intricate as American football and the athletes can't compare to NBA athletes (I've played against NBA athletes: you can't understand until you have), but nonetheless handball is a great sport. In New York, we have a totally different game that's also called handball. I don't think it's played anywhere else in the world. If you watch the movie Big with Tom Hanks, you can see them play.

More like Basketball players can't compete with Handball players at all. I played both sports and football(soccer), handball is phisically on another level. Football was the easiest to play.

I think to introduce a new sport in the USA first the National Association should persuade the girls in the schools to know. For example the soccer would get some popularity in the USA through the women soccer success. The water polo got some popularity through the American women athletes as well. I think the women team handball should be used by same recipe to show the girls in the schools. The women team handball is same good entertainment in the TV or in the sport halls as the men handball.

Yet again.... so many ignorants. You can not compare handball, basket ball and american football. But let us play with the though: If Lebron can become the best handballer in the world with only 6 month of training, Mikkel Hansen can become the best basket ball player in the world after 6 month too... or?

    U need BIG cardio
    Body that can take hit
    Fast leg
    Strong shoulder
    Fast eye
    Big jump
Andbth maestria is when u come to spin this fckin ball to do curvy or even takin 90° angles
U need big team play even more in defense
And goalies take 130 km/h ball full face on purpose for saving theire teams
This game is cool this sport is war
    I love this

I love how people think that Handball is just an easy sport to go to from basketball or baseball.
Are the best of the best in those sports very good athletes? Yes. And a lot of skills would transfer over.
But the best of the best in handball are also very good athletes with skills that more closely fit handball.
If handball was so easy to dominate, wouldn't we see a good US handball team in the olympics with all the basketball and baseball players the US has to draw from? And yet, the US team is full of foreign born people.
Handball isn't just basketball with three steps and a goal.

First of all, team handball is not for everyone. Don't know how tall and strong you are, in fact, you could play handball no matter your size and muscles, but you won't play it at a competitive level. You could be short, but you could play either a center back(play maker, so only on the offensive part) if you have great skills to handle that ball, or, you could be an winger, but you've got to jump high. Otherwise, wanna see the first team handball video game for Android? Check out: "Republic of Handball" on google play.

America wining gold in team handball at Olympics is even harder than going to Moon for real (not like the hoax from 1969). I truly believe that USA should rather follow the steps of Brazil and Argentina, both south American teams were on the same level with USA, 25 years ago. Now both teams are strong enough to constantly defeat European teams.

USA isn't even close to the mid-good teams and they are saying they can win gold thanks to players that didn't even played this sport before. Also lebron won't do shit in a handball match. This sport is way more aggresive and Compact than basketball.
