One of the things I enjoy about doing YT is the learning process. Learning is great for your brain! Creating better videos, finding what works, what doesn't, understanding how thumbnails and titles are so important. I love creating and interacting with my viewers. After raising 5 kids, I needed something to fill my time and I'm glad I decided to try YT. It is a challenge, but most things that are worth doing are!

Absolutely! I’m surprised at how it’s so much more than just pointing a camera at your target and hitting record. There’s creativity in what and where’d to post, and how to design a thumbnail. Writing and speaking skills are needed. Such a wide array of talent needed. 😊

Yes Brian, it is difficult to grow a UA-cam channel but if you want to grow a channel you have to endure the challenge. It is a challenge to achieve anything and you just have to make sure you don't give up! Love 🥰 the video and love ❤ Brian and I am part of the closing crew.

Hey Brian I think this is one of the best videos you ever made. UA-cam can be pretty tough. When my videos don't do good I feel like it is my fault and that I just need to keep improving. That can get pretty depressing sometimes but it is what it is. So I just keep watching your videos and trying to improve. It really does take a positive attitude to keep going.

So glad your channel is growing, and thank you for sharing the realities of that. If we just say "the algorithm hates me" then we stagnate, and we deserve to. The opposite of growth is stagnation. I do want to grow, I am working on that, I often don't get it right, but I'm trying. And as to the algorithm, or algorithms, it's a program, a bunch of numbers, it has no feelings one way or the other, it just has numbers to crunch and data to analyse and results to implement, and when I look at my feed I have to say it does a pretty good job. I just have to tap into that so I become part of that good job. Happy New Year Brian. Onward and upward for all of us. (PS and ALWAYS part of the Closing Crew).

Closing Crew as always. After working long hours over the Christmas period, I got my first video of the New Year posted. As I type this, it's only had 111 views...BUT 77% retention after the first minute and comments saying how much the video helped people. How can I be unhappy with that? Generally I only see around 65% after 30 seconds, so that great improvement for my videos.
I'm using 3 thumbnails, but they don't seem to be getting clicked on, so I have a new opportunity to grow by improving them.
Yes I lost subscribers over Christmas when I didn't get time to post, but that's OK. I've already seen great improvement in my first video of the year. If I can keep that retention up and improve in other areas, this is gonna be a great year. Thanks Brian.

Thanks Brian for this great video. I watched it from start to finish as I do a lot of videos from UA-cam coaches to golf coaches to guitar channels. I can only imagine what would happen if my videos were ones that viewers watched from start to finish. I really believe that is the key as well as viewers comments and other engagement that triggers the algorithm to keep showing the video to more and more folks. After 4 years of having my channel and failing to even reach monetization, I absolutely know I’m to blame and at some point in the journey I lost the focus of consistently publishing 1 video a week. I also got to the point of being sick of the fact that there has to be some kind of magic in the title and thumbnail to get people’s attention to watch my videos. I also believe 💯 in the positive aspect. However, I find that part of being successful with the title and TN is all about coming up with a negative condescending controversial approach. At least that is how it feels to me and really makes it hard to compete in this wild world. I admit I’m on a little break but I haven’t given up and quit yet. Sorry for the book but you inspire me and that is a good thing!

I watch every video I click on to the end. As a fellow creator I know the struggle and want to help my friends as much as possible. When people realize that the algo and the audience doesn't care the better off they will be. People want to be entertained and the algo wants to entertain. It is up to you to be entertaining to join the loop. Most like myself needs to commit to learning how to be entertaining. I also think that taking a psychology course or books like how to win friends and influence people will help a ton with learning how to be entertaining. You reap what you sow. You get back what you put in. It is that simple.

Great video Brian - I agree - Your mindset is the key (not only to UA-cam success, but to life!). Also, I picture the algorithm as a vending machine - the user pushes a button for what they want/like, and the machine just goes and fetches it and drops it in the slot - it doesn't have feelings, it doesn't care, it just does its job!

Even being aware of our own shortfalls they can take a lot of overcoming. We can tweak thumbnail, title and description to be found but that's the easy bit, getting them to watch it for a while is the tough one. Then again I've had vids on numerous channels that did nothing for several weeks then suddenly take off (at least in terms of my typical views), then the next few do nothing again.

  • @AndreSjoberg
    @AndreSjoberg 16 днів тому

Keeping it on a positive note here: at 12:03 - is it *really* the algorithms fault videos flatline? I totally agree either way the rest of the video, we who make videos are solely responsible for our content and it’s quality.
But the reason videos flatline is because not enough *people* watch the video within a given time slot for the algorithm to push it to more people. And that is purely because a video is not good enough to cut through and/or the topic/title/thumb is not good enough to get the required amount of people within a specific time slot to click and watch.
The algorithm is just a mechanic, like a thermostat, a video gets enough clicks and average viewtime above a certain threshold it gets more exposure, if it performs below a certain threshold it gets pushed to less people and a newly uploaded video gets the exposure.
These thresholds are of course not numbers, but percentages, based on complicated math and many, many factors, but the resulting mechanism is simple: Above the threshold YT keeps pushing the video, below the threshold YT pushes it less - and there are of course not just one threshold but several, which determines how much more or less a video gets pushed/exposure - so while it is «technically» correct to claim the algorithm is responsible for a video flatlining (it shows your video to less people) the reason for it doing so is purely based on the performance of the video, which is directly linked to the creator and the «quality» of the video :)
Other than that this video was spot on, it’s always up to us, the creators, and our ability to stay persistent, create regularly and improve incrementally (and cross our fingers we at some point hit that magical moment where our creation aligns with or exceeds the viewers expectations :)

Took me four years to reach 1K subscribers listening to channels with millions of subscribers telling me what to do. I finally hit 1K June 2024 - after nearly quitting three times. Then I began to wonder what would happen if I just did things MY way. I went from 34 subs a month to more than 3K a week.
Fast forward 6 months to December 2024 and I'm now a UA-cam ad sense partner program, UA-cam shopping affiliate, Walmart affiliate...
I quickly realized that the algorithm has nothing to do with it. Mega channels telling you how to grow has nothing to do with it. In fact, they will most likely hold you back as they held me back.
If you remember nothing else people remember that UA-cam is a business. Less than 9% of all UA-camrs are part of the UA-cam partner program for AdSense revenue. There's something wrong with the advice being given when most people fail. If only 9% of my students could pass their exam I would not be deemed a very good teacher.
Sometimes you just have to go with your gut instincts. It's okay. You don't have to behold the algorithm 😂

My mindset is whether my most recent video is 1/10 or 10/10, make another video. The algorithm favors videos that have high retention.
Finally, when I get my monthly report, I always notice that about ¾ of last month’s views came from videos uploaded in the last 28 days.
Maybe the algorithm favors channels that upload frequently.
I have a few that do well in search 2 years after upload (evergreen or slow burn) but still most views come from the most recent videos.

"hey I am still watching, closing crew in the house"
I think a lot of folks are just looking for anything they possibly can find to complain about. Camera angle makes little to no difference with your type of videos on this channel. Perhaps a product shot, angle does matter, but not a talking head video.
I personally think "mindset" is one of the biggest factors there is. If you think negative, that is the results you are going to get, negative results.
Learn little things here and there and add them all together and stir them around in your head and keep on keeping on because it is something you enjoy.

What do you want? The true purpose of starting my channel is to create a legacy. I want to document my life. If people watch, great, if they don't and my channel does not grow, that's OK too. I don't want to be trapped in a niche-down channel, where we are all coping each others successful videos. I am retired, if I need money, I'll go back to work. It's easier to make money that way.
    BTW awesome video

I think this was a soft video Brian. I think you need to be more honest. Keep up the great work. The Algorithm is the audience. If it is not pushing your content it’s because your audience isn’t watching. If a creator wants different results they have to make changes. Happy New Year!

The algorithm isn't the boogie man for creators. It's attempting to feed viewers videos that keep them watching.
They can only sell commercials if there are viewers.

I am pretty ignorant in other areas, but as musician (it's my case) trying to maintain a constant basis of uploading videos regularly is not so easy. I mean, music composing is an act of inspiration - an elusive element that comes and goes - , then choosing the right instruments, interesting harmonies, mix all together, video editing can be really exhausting sometimes. I opened my UA-cam Music channel 8 months ago, with hard work and luck I reached 616 subscribers and my most visited video reached 4.6K views, which is nothing in comparison to any random hot girl making scratches on a turntable in her bedroom and reaches 10M visits with one video.

I bring up this question. Why is it that you can make hundreds id not thousands of videos and keep at it and only make 50 views per video? The reason i pose this question is to show why some people come to certain conclusions even if they might not be fully correct.
A creator might think "I've been at this for multiple years now consistently, changing, growing, improving and never stopping and yet 50 views a video? Why is it that every video i post gets between 5k to 10k impressions but it translates to between 50 to 250 views?"
Alot of creators i believe wants to figure that out. They want to know why 50 views instead of 50k views?
They tried plenty already. Podcasts, live streaming, shorts, long forms. Studio setup. Talking head. Out in public. Etc
And every last one 50 views instead of 50k views.
This is where the discouragement comes from. No its not the algorithm. But then again what is the problem?
Being stuck in limbo without answers i believe is what builds anger and frustration where some creators are like fine. If nothing is going yo work then im making 100k videos and im going flood the platform just to overwhelm the algorithm and make it notice me.
(Not realizing that youtube will probably flag them as spam if they tried something like that)
Personally do i think its the algorithm? No! I really don't. But then again what is the problem remains unanswered because im not scared to experiment. Ill try anything. But then again it weighs on the mind when the numbers keep looking the same.
I would believe that some parts of this could be the reason why some people lose hope.
Its just the feeling of nothing i do gets me that shorts with millions of videos or that long form with hundreds of thousands of views.
So your almost convinced that the next video you put out will only continue the trend of small growth.
Just throwing that out there as ive heard a few creator friends of mine all relate to this. And wonder when is that consistent drastic growth coming.
    Great video as always!

I love your comment it’s so well thought out and written. And Leo here’s the thing. I clicked on your video. I watched. I thought.
first thing how you communicate on Camera as plenty good. Second thing your titles and thumbnails need a lot of work. Third thing I thought I don’t think Leo is really paying attention to the strategy I’ve laid out literally in about six videos in the last two months.
and I get it it’s hard to change our ways. I’ve talked about it again and again finding videos that are popular with smaller UA-camrs and making your own version. I think that would really help. Furthermore I think your thumbnails and again your titles really need work. Starting a title off with episode number 72 is just not the thing that’s gonna grab viewers that don’t know about you.

    • @BriangjohnsonTv
      @BriangjohnsonTv  17 днів тому +1

to answer your question why is it that even if you post thousands of videos you don’t see growth it’s simple. If you don’t improve what needs to be improved things won’t change. Even if you do there’s no guarantee because this platform is bloody hard. These are my thoughts.

haha, i hear you Brian! Im never giving. And ive had a video or two gain a little moderate success.
It's just as you said the competition is fierce so if you don't stand out the real chances are that you will not pull ahead. Plenty of truth in that.
Appreciate your responses so much! And thank you again for the feedback on my videos! It gave me something to work with.

Channel growth in terms of subscribers is borderline irrelevant especially if they don't support the channel. Views and watch time are really all that matters. You've got 165k subs, but less than 1k views as of me writing this. Big numbers and little support from your subs. I see it all the time. Even super popular channels with multiple million subs, they'll get 50,000 views.

    • @BriangjohnsonTv
      @BriangjohnsonTv  15 днів тому

without question and so many people really have no idea how UA-cam works. Usually it’s people without the subscriber numbers they’re commenting on. I’m guessing you don’t have anything near 100,000 subscribers in fact I’m gonna guess you’ve got less than 50,000 subscribers. Furthermore I bet your channel hasn’t been around for four or five years. Mine‘s been around for eight years. Even more my channel is based on a very specific subject that’s based on how to do something. Something that people think they’re interested in one day and then give up on the next what do you think happens when it’s based on UA-cam? Specifically being a content creator well they give up they let go of their dreams and they unsubscribe. Furthermore you’re probably not aware but I took about a 3 to 4 year break to address some serious personal that needed my attention. I share this not for you to feel sorry for me but to let you know that it’s really hard to understand what’s happening under the hood unless you’ve experienced it yourself. Good luck to you my friend
