    Thank you so much I was a component level service engineer on Acorn computers in the early 90s but not done much with silly small components since then...… Anyway I woke up to my 2012 Macbook pro dead! I followed the instructions on ifixit to remove the board and resoldered the IC. It is now back together and working perfectly. Seriously you have saved me a LOT of money we pay the equivalent of near $3000 for the base MacBook Pro 16" on this side of the pond and my 2012 is still doing the business.

    Thank you! I did this successfully with a Harbor Freight 100w solder gun. Just filed the tip to a blade like another viewer mentioned. I bought the solder and flux you mention in the comments. I had no soldering experience, so practiced soldering on an old kindle that was headed to the e-waste pile.

    Tried it and it worked after spending a month or two to pluck up courage. The comments from people who filed down soldering pistols and the like inspired a sense of recklessness - I did buy a thermostatic iron, no mess flux and an antistatic mat with a cuff.
    I made a microscope to inspect before and after with a laser pointer lens on my phone camara.
    The video makes it look quite simple - just check out other videos on the same issue to get a broader view.

    Thank you. What can I say? When I was assembling the computer back I was thinking, such an effort and the bloody screen wont lit... Worse than that, the computer will toast the second I press the power button. I've assembled it and even used all the screws (surprise!). One hand on the switch, another on the mag safe (plan B: if you smell burnt electronics, if it doesn't start imediatelly, Pull the plug. Avoid burning the building). Pressed the switch, the screen came alive, the rotten apple shining and chiming. For a quarter of the price I keep the soldering Iron, the flux, the solder, the screw driver kit, the isopropril alcool, the magnifying glass, the second hand and the knowledge. THANK YOU!!!! It works, and it is quite simple though terrifying. Best regards :)

    It should be a piece of thermal conductor, to remove the heat from the chip and to reduce its thermal expansion, which will reduce the tension on the soldering points.

    In case someone else tried this repair and it didn't help: Try putting a bit of thin (~1mm thick) foam on the U7400 chip. This is the similarly sized but slightly larger chip to the right of the U8900 chip. It worked for me. So it could be that my U8900 repair failed, or that the problem is in fact with the U7400 chip, or even somewhere else...I know this is not a proper repair but it works flawlessly now so I'm going to leave it as it is.

It looks like - apply flux, melt some solder on the tip of the iron, then simply run the iron over the pins. Is that it? No hot air or heat plate involved? Many thanks, Ben

    Does this also happen in the Late 2013 15" models? I took one of those to a service shop and they completely botched the thermal grease application (as well as other things), the CPU temp went up to 110°C!!, I opened it up, cleaned it and added some fresh thermal compound and it was ok at first but then suddenly I stopped getting video from either HDMI or mini-DP. VNCing into the machine shows the GPU is being detected but not recognized (i.e. it sees an "NVidia Chip Model" with 0 MB RAM connected to the PCI Express), could this be caused by a problem such as the one in this video?

    • @PowerbookMedic
      @PowerbookMedic  5 років тому

      Yes, it actually does happen to some of the 2013 models. Apple has applied an Edge bonding around the VCORE chip which has helped the issue in most units, but some of them still have it. It would definitely be something to try.

    I have the Mac that you did the video about, mid 2012 15" Macbook Pro, model # 1398, nice machine until the dreaded black screen issues.
    Being a Pro Audio Technician myself, semi familiar with surface mount technology component level troubleshooting and repair, I followed your video to try to service my Mac. I do believe that I'm following the correct path as I did see some change in black screen instances after attempting to freshen the solder around the J8900 chip listed in the video.
    However, I am not equipped to do this work at home. I bought smallest tip I could find for my Weller Soldering station, and have a 10 power eyeglass, I cant see the IC Chip very well, or tell if my solder joints came out alright. But now the machine wont boot up at all...:(
    Apple wants a $750 flat rate for that model, a guy could buy a whole different Mac for that.
    Curious if could send either just the logic board or the whole machine to you for repair. I bet you guys could fix it quickly as I'm betting the trouble is right where the video says, although, could be something else.
    Let me know rates/fees, turn around time, shipping address, etc..

    Hi the failure is detected by testing motherboard or some software? My macbook pro mid2014 15'' no failure in D diagnose and no failure in Techtool, symthoms is already same, the problem is very common? I'm afraid it's the GPU thanks!

    • @PowerbookMedic
      @PowerbookMedic  6 років тому

      The software won't always detect a failure. For example when the GPU Vcore chip is going bad it will output the correct voltage and then all of a sudden drop which gives an error in the software. However if the voltage doesn't drop during testing then there won't be an error. It's possible that your GPU core IC chip is going bad as well. It’s not nearly as common on those models but is still possible to happen.

      Vasco Patrício Glad you enjoyed the video! Each hot air station is different and each person uses them differently. So we don’t share the temps as that is a thing that you really have to experiment with yourself. Just start low and slowly move the temps up.

      No, most computer repair companies do not do component level repair. You would need to ask if they did component level repair, and even then you need to find a company that is highly experienced in these type of repairs as you can cause a lot of damage if you don't know what you're going. If you can't find anyone locally, we do have a send-in service at this link: www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67

      When that happens the CPU is not posting. So there is either a fault with the CPU itself or a power line for the CPU is damaged. It would require some diagnosing and measuring.

      You likely just need a board repair. You can find more info our our repair services at : www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 . As for the data you want to recover, you could just take the drive out of the machine and put it into an external enclosure without having this unit fixed. Hi ! Very interesting video :)
    My Retina Macbook Pro 15'' (mid-2012), is getting black screen on boot. Sometimes I can boot on safe mode, sometime not.
    After lots of digging on line, I figured out that it could be my discrete graphic card (Nvidia) that can be faulty.
    I forced Mac OS X to use only the integrated graphic card by running an command line that modifies NVRAM (that command can be cancelled using Apple NVRAM reset shortcut) :
    sudo nvram fa4ce28d-b62f-4c99-9cc3-6815686e30f9:gpu-power-prefs=%01%00%00%00
    I can now boot but some features disappaered (like changing the luminosity of the screen, using an external monitor, ...).
    My question is the following : is that the same problem that the one described in this video ?
    Thanks a lot

    • @PowerbookMedic
      @PowerbookMedic  6 років тому

      Yes, most likely it will be the GPU Vcore chip. We've had many of these with the black screen symptom that just needed the VCore chip to be re-soldered correctly. That should fix the problem right up.

      There is no way of knowing for sure if one part is bad or another with the information that was provided. You will need to narrow down whether the GPU VCORE is bad or whether the Voltage In or the Enable lines are the issue. Or possibly if the the GPU itself is bad.
