    End-of-week H/H match recap:
    ...
    ~~~Today's action:
    The latest in a growing string of one-time champions was defeated in the closing moments of yesterday's program. We start today's show with our brand-new champion in center stage, ready to win some big money.
    Today's audience match question: "Warren _______ " (I'll pass because names are harder to guess or remember after nearly 50 years.)
    The celebs: Brett (Beatty), Pat (Oates), and Richard (Harding)
    The choice: Beatty
    The answers: Burger, Harding, Beatty
    Alright, our new champ starts off with a $500 audience match win. When he was calling on celebs, he said he matches Brett a lot when he watches at home, so I wonder if that will carry on to the H/H match? Or will Richard extend his string of 13 consecutive times playing for the big money?
    I love it! He picks Brett! I do enjoy seeing her get all verklempt! Quick review: Brett hasn't played the H/H match since 665 (which she matched). In fact, she's matched every one of her four most recent attempts. Is five in a row pushing her luck?
    Today's H/H question: "Howdy _______ "
    (My first thought was that this is super easy - I can only think of the one answer: Doody.)
    Brett smiles immediately and begins to write. She files her answer in record time (for her) without the slightest agitation or hesitation.
    "Please be Doody, Brett!" says our champion.
    Brett looks slightly aghast, but in the past she's demonstrated fake-out talents that rival or surpass Richard's. Looking apologetic, she says, "You know, I started to write Doody..." (The contestant looks disappointed and turns away in defeat.) "... and I never changed my mind!"
    Brett scores her 24th H/H match today!
    ~~~This week saw only 4 H/H matches (the contestant struck out with the audience match on Thursday). Even sadder, there were only two matches this week: Richard 1/3, Brett 1/1
    Well, after two and a half weeks of only Richard, a new champion goes a different route and ends up winning 5 grand with Brett. (Incidentally, this is the first non-Richard win in the H/H since Clifton Davis scored one in 674.) Brett has been ahead of Richard in accuracy for a few weeks now (the two of them have traded places 6 or 7 times over the course of the show), but today Brett widens her lead to 2.4 percentage points. Richard won't easily catch her by matching - the only realistic way for him to retake the lead now is if Brett has a string of bad luck in future head-to-head matches.
    Oh, and with Brett's attempt today, she and Charles together have now played in exactly 100 H/H matches! But in that regard, Richard has them beat by a country mile - 402 attempts!
    Looking at the rest of the panel, Betty and Orson finish the week where they started, at 50% and 100%, respectively. Based on 34 attempts, I think Betty's track record is fairly indicative, but Orson has only played 4 times, so it's hard to judge his rating. Let's not forget Charles who hasn't played since 631 (he matched then). His accuracy stands at 47.7% (well above Brett's and Richard's), and it's based on 44 attempts, so that's plenty of data. I think it's a shame he isn't called on more often.
    Finally, of course, Pat Delany ends her one and only Match Game week without playing the H/H.
    ~~~Looking ahead to next week, our three regulars will be joined by:
    --Semi-regular Fannie Flagg, back after a single week's absence. This will make 3 out of 4 weeks she's been on the panel. She is #4 on the list of most-frequent MG panelists (at 90 weeks) after all, with only our three regulars appearing more frequently.
    --Bill Cullen, returning for his third week (of 5). It's been a while for Bill - his last appearance was way back in episodes 176-180. He's been chosen for the head-to-head once, but didn't match.
    --Finally, we have another "one-and-done" guest panelist in the fourth seat: Janice Pennington.
    ~~~Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts).
    TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts).
    Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts).
    Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts).
    Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 42.9% (24 wins in 56 attempts).
    Richard - 40.5% (163 wins in 402 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 690, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

    Slow week again but Brett managed to wrestle the title away from Richard this week to win for the regulars giving away 6,000 dollars in head to head and audience match matches with 9 matches. Orson and Betty tied this week for the semi regulars with 7 matches each. Richard still managed to give away 3,250 dollars in head to head and audience match matches himself..

    2:56 Five years earlier, Warren Oates had starred in _Two Lane Blacktop_ alongside James Taylor and Dennis Wilson. It’s a really unique film that has become more popular as a cult classic in the years since, which is perhaps why Gene had never heard of Oates. I’d recommend it to anyone who digs 70s existential cinema and enjoys seeing what America looked like in that time period.

    • @Observer-jw8wv
      @Observer-jw8wv 4 роки тому +1

      @@billwheeler7243 That's almost right, and easy to verify by referring to the episode guide at the Goodson Todman fandom site. The counting of episodes starts with 1 so a single day's filming would go 1-5, then 6-10, 11-15 , 16-20, etc. So the 0's are never the first episode filmed on a given day; they are always the last. There was a meal break, usually after 2nd or 3rd episode filmed, depending on what time they got started. The episodes ending in 4, 5, 9, and 0 are often (but not always) pretty raucous. In this episode Gene seems really hopped up. I can't really speak to the pills assertion, but yes by all accounts some drinking went on. Not everyone participated in the revelry. Dawson did not drink at all. I thought Rayburn didn't either, but I've read differing accounts of that.

The suggestion that Gene and Richard were part of the Hollywood pill-popping scene just bugs me, especially since it is thrown around with no evidence. Gene was never PART of that scene -- his career began in NY and he never moved to Hollywood and preferred to live in Massachusetts. Richard stayed out of the party scene too. He was by all accounts a homebody. There are no photos or news accounts from the 60s and 70s of him partying or drinking or carousing. He worked hard and went home to his sons.
