  • Not much was expected from the Oklahoma City Thunder coming into the 2022-2023 season. But now that we are well past the half way point of the season, it is no secret that the youngest team in the NBA means business.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Lu Dort, Jalen Williams, and many others from the Thunder are showcasing what it means to be a true team player in the art of ball movement and offensive communication.
In this video essay, we break down the Oklahoma City Thunder's offensive play style and how the team, arranged by Sam Presti, plans to grow together in one of the most interesting playstyles in all of basketball.

And as Sam has pointed out referring to Shai, an NBA player ENTERS his real maturity as 24 years, meaning of course only Shai, KRich who is 28, and Dario now who is 28. Josh is 20, Poku 21, JDeb 21, JWill 20, Tre 22, JRE 23, Ous still 19 and Chet 20. On the average that translates to 3 or 4 years.

By that time, Josh game will be severely polished, Dort offensive game will be on point and he might even try to make a name for DPOY, ppl are gonna try to figure out shai but he’s gonna add more to his game and CheT will be 3 years into nba and I think he will have some mistakes or know what he can work on after his rookie season then it’s endgame after that. Awesome video mate. It is crazy to think this is the youngest team in NBA history (well, 2nd to last years team). Every single player looks like they are committed to uplifting the team rather than the individual. My guess is that has something to do with the ammount of international talent they possesses. They are giving off strong San Antonio vibes. Of course, they have a long way to go to reach those lofty heights.

What's mind-blowing is they're the youngest team in the NBA some college rosters are older than the thunder roster and they have a crazy amount of draft picks that it's insane and some of the so called experts are saying that they need to trade some for some big name free agent that's not going to happen they don't need some disgruntled superstar that doesn't want to be in OKC give the thunder a season or two and they will be hard to beat

How do you have only 4000 subscribers. This video is top notch. I really hope you will have a great success with your channel because your analysis is on point, and you deserve recognition for all the work you had to do to make this video.
Said that, me too I love OKC, and I see the same evolution that teams like Cavs and Kings had in the last couple of years. I really hope also Holmgren will come back strong, and will fit well to this team. I really like those teams that put teamwork over everything. And OKC is going strong into this direction. Then having some player like Gilgeous-Alexander, Giddey etc. surely helps. But the philosophy behind their playing is now settled. I also think that between all the superstars Shai is the perfect fit for this philosophy.
As an italian I really enjoy NBA in an healthy way. I don't root for anyone. I just pick some random teams to root for that I like to see play. 2 years ago the Cavs, this year the Kings. Next year I really hope to root for the Thunder. (yes I like more the underdogs lol)

Of course you WANT to play like this. It's great to have good decision makers. It's also great to have great players who don't needs plays run for them and can get thier own shot. KD, Luka, Kyrie et al. This style of play works for this team . Doesn't mean it applies equally every where. And when things slow down in the playoffs and teams are preparing for you and only you it gets harder to implement this. The last team that made this work was probably 2012 Spurs and they had the great Tim Duncan. Before that the last team with no real super star was the 05 Pistons. That's almost 20 years ago. In the words of the great John Wooden if you want to win. Make sure you have better players than everyone else.

This is a fantastic breakdown and puts together so many of the observations I have been having about the Thunder offense this season. That movement and passing is so fun to watch, and is made possible by the fact that we play five out with a skilled big all the time (not even Chet yet). That alone creates space for people to operate, and I wonder if it really opens the door for the Thunder to take ANOTHER really good decision-maker (passer and cutter) like Anthony Black or Ausar Thompson even if that player is currently a non-shooter. Most people think what we need is 3p shooting above all else, but I kind of want to see what this offense looks like with one more long, athletic decision-maker.

I think we can at least see some of the basic constant ball movement archetype that was present with the 2014 spurs (beautiful basketball) and the 2015-16 warriors. The thunder are younger and more athletic than that spurs team so with some experience and a solid big who can commit, they can make a couple deep runs before dudes start getting better contract offers from other teams.

Giddey is a supremely talented floor general with extremely high BBIQ, and we haven't even seen what he'd look like with legit NBA spacing and a big man who can threaten big time in the PnR game and set screens.
He's always playing with non great spacing or a lineup where he is the best scorer on offense.
Shai refuses to shoot. Dort and JDub are both inconsistent. The bigs have shown glimpses but none of them (after muscala left) are genuinely going to knock down a high clip with contested 3s with a quick release and eagerness.
Poku has a chance to be that but his screening is disgracefully bad and he's unplayably bad on defense at the 5, that being the main lineups OKC got mauled on early in the season. Poku at the 5 is just horrible right now for winning games

OKC management team is the mad scientist of the NBA. I mean this in a good way. But, also, OKC has been a lottery team for a while. I am concerned that their chemistry is driven primarily by SGA and he might demand a trade if he feels OKC isn't ready to make a playoff push very soon. If next year Chet comes back but the team isn't winning, he might demand a trade. OKC is a tiny market and his value is diminished there, especially when they are not winning. Had he played for NY or LA, he would be an all-star for a few years (regardless of their record) and would get far more recognition and exposure. It's a curse of small-market teams and OKC is as small as they get. The window of opportunity to build a playoff team probably ends next year.

Poku is a project player and before his unpredictability wasn't in good rhythm. It was weird shots and turnovers but this year he played more predictable in his role, he has been out so hasn't played with the team playing this well

Very interesting way to think, everything is a game of decisions, make the right decisions at the right time and you'll win most games.
A team full of good decision makers with decent enough ability to execute those decisions will more than likely beat a team full of skilful players with poor decision making skills

@@systemloading45 back then the thunders did not have a bench n had a ball hog inefficient Westbrook taking shots away from Durant.
Now that will have everything better compared to before...good shooters in the lineup n bench n great defense.

Kudos to the Thunder first off but they are just running a motion offense with emphasis on pushing the ball after every shot and in the half court drive, cut and always keep spacing. This is not revolutionary, its old school basketball, how the game should be played. We literally ran this offense, almost exactly, in High school in the mid 1990"s. The NBA is a dumpster fire of awful basketball, one can only hope this catches on and we return to a watchable league. The game is the worst its ever been in my lifetime, as far as presenting an entertaining product while playing good basketball. Its not the players fault, its the league and its rules and just as important its "interpretation" of those rules /how the game is actually called. I pray the Thunder are the first of many to go back to sound basketball principles.
