    Well I have just had to pause this after 14 minutes as I am totally blown away by this performance of Elton. My favourite version of 60 years on as always been the live version he did with Dee and Nigel on the 17-11-70 album. But here he is on his jack jones and that was just totally stunning. I have many official Videos DVD'S and Blue Rays of this guy and have even seen him live and I wish to god this concert was available officially. 14 minutes in and totally gobsmacked. The guy is a genius without doubt.

      Yes this is a great variety of his catalogue. Sadly in the last 5 years I can predict his songs befores he plays them. He doesnt throw enough surprises anymore in his lists.

      Yeah, I agree, Elton gave us so many treats. Even though his band has been great, I still prefer Elton with the piano alone. He can play really well. Of course, it ain't Hiromi or Chick Corea level, but in rock, Elton is as best as it can get. I wish Elton pull out his Roland RD-1000 again. But it won't happen. It was by far my favorite musical instrument, and still is.

    • @LeeLucas
      @LeeLucas 10 років тому +1

      Andrew Piatek Well to be honest I think Elton is far more entertaining than Chick Corea and he can be very sporadic on the keys and play dribble at times. I would love to see him play Tonight as good as what Elton did here and I really do not think he would have a cats chance in hell of playing like that.

    • @dvamateur
      @dvamateur 10 років тому

      Lee Lucas
      Well, these are different styles of music. Chick Corea is on a much higher lever musically. (Hiromi is even better than Chick, in my opinion, far better.) The harmony is far more complex in Chick's compositions, and the themes are uncanny. Having said, I enjoy Elton's music, mainly due to the piano playing style. Most people enjoy Elton end bought many records because he sings songs. To me, Elton is sort of like 20th century Mozart. He produced so many melodic and strong musical compositions, that I think the two can be compared. Having said that, there some classical music performers today, that might be not too entertaining for most people. Yet, their level of musicianship is of highest order, second to none, even if misunderstood by most, including me. Coming back to Elton, I don't like his CD's too much. There's too much singing, drums, and instruments on them. In other words, the music is too "produced" for mass consumption. That's my opinion. I far prefer Elton without any bands, and especially I loved when he played the RD-1000. The sound of that instrument was fantastic. So even though Elton's music is quite primitive and keyboard technique inferior compared to other composers and performers mentioned above, I must say I enjoy his live music. He has great style, too, endorsing Yamaha, Roland, Versace, Sergio Tacchini, need I say more? But if I had a choice between going to Elton's concert and Hiromi concert, I'd choose the later without even thinking :)

    • @LeeLucas
      @LeeLucas 10 років тому

      Andrew Piatek Well your absolutely right regarding styles and for me Chick is perhaps more of an improvisation chap than an actual composer. Because from what I've heard of his studio material sounds bugger all like it live and does not remotely come close to what the guy supposed to be playing in the first place. Honestly my older brother is a big fan of him and thats how I got to hear a lot of his stuff. Take the band Return To Forever as an example. Now a few years back they got back together and played the Montreux Jazz Festival. Now I myself am more into Progressive Rock than even Elton John to be honest and that reason alone made me buy a good few albums by Return To Forever because I felt some of that material was more towards the Prog Rock Genre. Now I brought the Blu Ray of that Concert and as well as Chick the band had some extremely talented musicians. But WTF I would like to know is what the hell they was playing. Because every one of the tracks from the so called studio albums they did many moons back sounded fuck all like it. Now as far as I am concerned and as much as I love the production and sound quality of that concert and can enjoy it. But in all honesty they was making it up as they went along. For me that's dribble and some of it is very much what I would call Verbal Diarea.

    Another pause here after 25 minutes and have to say what a fantastic set list this is, and certainly from my fave era of Eltons songs. Must say though I was well disappointed with that last song Talking Old Soldiers. Eltons voice lacked the expression big style in comparison to the studio version and just never cut the mustard for my liking. The song itself is one of my faves from the Tumbleweed album and it always struck me about Taupin's vision of growing old at such a young age himself when he wrote these words. I myself had this album way before I left school and can remember the first time I ever went to a pub for a drink when I was about 16. I looked at all the old aged people in particular and thought to myself is this what it's going to be like for the rest of my life, and it scared the shit out of me.

    I show that show twice in Paris in 1994. Not exactly the same, with some minor changes on the tracklist (including the then previously unreleased "Believe" and "Live Like Horses"), but almost the same. The 1994 tour video is available here in good quality : Elton John/Ray Cooper - 1994 - Los Angeles - A Special Evening With Elton John. Just fantastic

    Honestly I had to laugh when Elton said "Better off Dead" was a good description of the place he was performing. It's already been established the conditions weren't great with the bugs and whatnot. I would've felt the same way and I don't even live in South Africa. I was too young at the time, anyway. (just born the year before in April 1992.) The point is I admire him for braving the wind and getting through it. Anyway, it was interesting to hear Funeral for a Friend as a lead in for Tonight. I'm used to hearing Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding played together. It was my first time but I heard him do it on November 9th when he performed in Philadelphia for the Farewell Tour. Lately I've also been listening to the soundboard recordings that have been posted where Carla Etude was in the set before "Tonight". It kinda makes me wonder when he started playing Carla Etude along with Tonight, or when he started playing Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding together.

    • @mtthwskdmr2
      @mtthwskdmr2 3 місяці тому

      If memory serves, the first instance of him using Funeral for a Friend as the lead into Tonight would've been his week at the Rainbow Theatre in 1977. He'd then go to use it in the 1979 A Single Man tour, and then further on into the future. I think there's only been once where he did Carla/Etude into Tonight, and it was the Royal Opera House in London in 2002. Carla ends on the same chord Tonight begins on (D minor), so I'm honestly surprised he didn't do that before. Especially in the American leg of the 1986 tour where Tonight was a standard in the setlist.

    Hello people, I just want you all to know some of the historical context of this concert. Sun City is a resort in South Africa. It thrived during the apartheid, as it and his owner, Sol Kezner, benefited from ugly deals with the government. This resort was used by the white ruling class to paint a fake positive picture of the awful, racist policies in South Africa. They paid a lot of money to artists that dared to play there, going against the boycott of the racist government. Sun City is a shameful note in the past of too many famous musicians. Elton John played twice there: once in 1983, and once in 1993. Here's a Wikipedia article if you want to know more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_City_(South_Africa)
