FYI some speedometers have twist tabs to remove the section in the video. They often break off. I usually will fix them using j and b weld during the assembly process. Put the parts together and sand the areas you put j and b weld on. make sure the needle moves easily then mix up j and b let it sit overnight then finish the assembly.

Thanks for this! I was able to loosen up two different seized speedometers by using a heat gun instead of a torch and I didn't have to disassemble them. Thought I'd give it a try before taking them apart again. put some 3n1 oil in them. one is getting installed, the other is just a spare. We'll see how long it lasts, but I couldn't believe how solidly it was stuck and how little heat it took to loosen it. I used a speedo cable that I cut the end off of and chucked it in a drill to spin it once it was free.

you're a man of all trades from the heavy structural work to final painting to clock working,
this is tipically a clock worker domain
    very good video.

We have just had a similar problem with our 67 split van, it was an erratic needle bouncing around all over the place, then a ticking noise until it stopped working, took it apart carefully following your video as its very similar to a split van speedo.

Hi Mike, have you done video showing how to get the heater slides and instrument cluster out of a '68 T2 bus, to repair/replace the speedo?

I think it might have a bus speedometer in it. KG should have beetle one.

@@Mikefngarage Great! Then i'm gonna justify buying a new one lol! I was not able to find any youtube clip on how to turn the digits to zero on that one. Seems like everyone had the beetle ones and only i got the bus one haha. It was untouched. I ruined it for accessing it inside. Wish i had just left it the way it was ayayayayeeee. Why do i try to fix things when they aint brokeb yet lol

Hey Mike, think you got the color for the charge (left round) incorrectly in green. It shold be RED like the oil pressure light (right round).
Another thing - if you look closely on the INTERNAL bezel which you took apart with the glass and outer bezel - you will see it has the outer color BLACK and the inner color what used to be white ( in the video i noticed its yellowish/ash-covered) - you should sand the inner side and repaint in glossy white - it will do magic with the baclight illuminatiin when driving at night.

Yea I mentioned that it was backwards. I just put it together the way it came apart. Maybe on the early cars it was in reverse. That is what I thought but yea painting that white would sure make it brighter with the old 6v system.
