This song by Adriano Celentano is an icon of Italian music. It is the story of a child, Adriano, who speaks of himself in the third person, who lived in what was once the outskirts of Milan, in via Gluck, where there were still not many houses, but the grass, which over time has been incorporated into the city. This boy from Via Gluck enjoyed playing on the lawns, where there wasn't much concrete yet, where there were quiet people who worked and lived happily. One day he was forced to go further downtown. He became an important Italian singer, but he never forgot his old home where there was grass and where he could play on the grass. One day he returned to that street where he had lived, but everything had changed. There were no longer his friends from the past, there was no more grass, but many houses and concrete. This song is ahead of its time. It is the first ecological hymn in pre-industrial Italy. We are approximately in the fifties after the war (World War II). Europe and Italy are becoming great nations and industrial economies. But the regret of pristine nature and the sincere and spontaneous relationships between people remain a huge regret for the older Adriano, who still sees Adriano as a little boy when he was happy, despite having become famous.

I enjoyed a lot your reaction. This is one of the most famous songs in Italy, almost an hymn! Everybody knows this song and many many many people know the lyrics. You said well: many italians sing this song by heart. When I sing it, the words flow out my mouth without even thinking about them. It's like remembering my own name, I don't need to think when I say it. And I almost cry, every time.
"Il ragazzo della Via Gluck" tells a melancholic story, as you said, about the negative impact of urbanisation. Celentano actually lived the story he sings about. He is that boy and he dedicated his entire career (65 years by now, he started in 1957, this song was composed in 1966) to various "society's illnesses" like pollution, disregard, hatred, loss of nature beauty caused by buildings, war... Adriano Celentano Is the most popular and loved artist in Italy. He is known in Italy as "preacher" and is often criticized because he talks about uncomfortable things and forces the people to think about their mistakes and their bad habits.
Thank you for your reaction... And let me say you are very pretty, I loved the joy you expressed during the song. I hope you will react to other Celentano's songs. I suggest "Prisencolinensinainciusol". You'll like it! (Look for the video with Raffaella Carrà... Or the one where he acts as teacher and dances with his students, you can take the one by the UA-cam user "le pietre rotolanti")
    Bye!

how many successful artists are dedicated enviromentalists as Celentano? He was writing this sort of songs since the late 60's (Un Albero di 30 Piani, Svalutaion etc.) meanwhile in Italy we have rappers singing about drugs, smoking and pimps and buying sex and cars...

Watching you feel the passion of that song, and hearing the chorus of the crowd brought tears to my eyes. Every immigrant, or person who has left home can resonate with the meaning of that song. I'm a son of Italian immigrants who left Italy to begin a new life in Canada. This was one of the many songs we used to sing while we were making wine or tomato sauce. At the time it was just a fun song to sing to. But I really understood what it meant to my father later in life when we returned to Italia and found her completely different. He said to me: You try to remember a simple time; and its gone. Its like looking through a fog; you see but can't make out what your looking at. Suddenly you're an old man in a strange place. You know it's the same place, only now the houses are gone. The bars are gone. Friends are gone. You don't recognize anyone. " That song brings back so much nostalgia of a home that once was. And not realizing that... when you said goodbye; it was really goodbye. Thank you for sharing this. I'm so happy that your soul could feel that love. God Bless!

This is an italian hymn, not a song. Especially for people from Milan. "Via Gluck" means Gluck Street, the street in Milan where Adriano grew up. Adriano is also an actor. One of the most carismatic artist in Italy.

This song is about Milan (Northern Italy), about when Milan became an industrialized city. Celentano (he is from Milan), with this song, regrets Milan when it was a more "natural" city.

... turn the vowel "u" into the German umlaut "ü" and the "via della Gluck" becomes the "Glückstrasse" - - > English "lucky street" 👍👏🍻

Questa è la storia di uno di noi, This is the story of one of us,
anche lui nato per caso in via Gluck, also born by chance in via Gluck,
in una casa fuori città, in a house outside the city,
gente tranquilla che lavorava. quiet people who worked.
Là dove c'era l'erba ora c'è una città Where there was the grass there is now a city
e quella casa in mezzo al verde ormai and where will that house in the middle of the greenery
    dove sarà? be now?
Questo ragazzo della via Gluck This boy from Gluck street
si divertiva a giocare con me he enjoyed playing with me
ma un giorno disse "vado in città" but one day he said "I'm going to town"
e lo diceva mentre piangeva, and he said it while he was crying,
io gli domando "amico, non sei contento? I ask him "friend, aren't you happy?
Vai finalmente a stare in città. Finally you go to stay in the city.
Là troverai le cose che non hai avuto qui, There you will find the things you didn't have here,
potrai lavarti in casa senza andar you'll can wash yourself at home without going
giù nel cortile". down to the courtyard".
"Mio caro amico", disse, "qui sono nato, "My dear friend", he said, "here I was born
e in questa strada ora lascio il mio cuore. and on this road I now leave my heart.
Ma come fai a non capire? But how can you not understand?
E' una fortuna, per voi che restate It's lucky for you who stay
a piedi nudi a giocare nei prati barefoot playing in the meadows
mentre là in centro io respiro il cemento. while there in the center I breathe the concrete.
Ma verrà un giorno che ritornerò ancora qui But there will come a day when I will return here again
e sentirò l'amico treno che fischia così, "wa wa"! and I will hear the train friend whistling like this, 'wa wa'!"
Passano gli anni ma otto son lunghi Years pass but eight are long,
però quel ragazzo ne ha fatta di strada, but that boy has come a long way
ma non si scorda la sua prima casa, but he doesn't forget his first house,
ora coi soldi lui può comperarla now with the money he can buy it,
torna e non trova gli amici che aveva, he comes back and doesn't find the friends he had,
solo case su case, catrame e cemento. just houses upon houses, tar and concrete.
Là dove c'era l'erba ora c'è una città, Where there was grass there is now a city
e quella casa in mezzo al verde ormai and where will that house in the middle of the greenery
    dove sarà? be now?
Ehi, Ehi, La la la... la la la la la... Hey, hey, la la la....la la la la la....
    Eh no, Well no
non so, non so perché, perché continuano I don't know, I don't know why, why they keep
a costruire, le case e non lasciano l'erba to build the houses and they don't leave the grass
non lasciano l'erba, non lasciano l'erba, they don't leave the grass, they don't leave the grass
non lasciano l'erba. they don't leave the grass.
Eh no, se andiamo avanti così, chissà Oh no, if we continue like this, who knows
come si farà, chissà... how will it be done? Who knows...
