Porches - Pool ALBUM REVIEW

Porches pull together some decent synth-led pop instrumentals here, but they're topped with some of the most off-key and uninspired vocals I've heard this year.

5/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Personally, I didn't really mind the vocals. Yeah, sometimes they were a bit off, but it surprisingly didn't bother me.
One of the best albums I've heard this year.
The vocals were, at first, a bit jarring, but I like that it just sounds like a regular guy singing. It's not super polished or fake. And it's not as if he lacks any melodic ability. The choruses on "Car" and "Mood" are super catchy. This record is flying under the radar, but I'd say it's in my top 5 for the year.
Agreed. "Mood," "Glow," and "Car" were standouts for me. I thought it was a real grower.
I'm a big fan of your videos but I must disagree and give this album a solid 8. Underwater, Braid, Be Apart, Mood, Hour, Glow, and Car are definitely highlights worth revisiting. I thought the instrumentation is fun and his voice is interesting & unstablicious!
Yes! Mood and Car are my favorites, but Glow and Shaver are creeping up lately. Really not a bad track on the album.
Unstablicious? That's not even a word, Kirk.
I actually really like his vocals on this record. The occasional flatness is endearing imo and to focus on that so much kind of ignores the very amazing and unique tenor of that dude's voice.. it's immediately recognizable. I think if anything the vox are the key element in distinguishing the album from those burning dream pop records of yours ;)
+Colin Caulfield Completely agree, Aaron's voice stands out for me in a sea of ultra reverby dreamy falsetto. Those vocal styles are good in their own right, but I like how Porches sets themselves apart by being a little apathetic in their delivery. I really enjoyed this record, sounds sick on vinyl as well.
+Alexmarriedagoat Y'all are both right and Fantano is wrong. And the fact that Porches are just about the only band today writing great melodies. How is that "one note" singing?
This is an 8/10 for me. I get that it's a little samey, but I like it. It's the kind of music that I can drive to.
+Kevin King I agree with you, especially night drives. It's also the perfect comfy music to play in the house when you have some friends over for drinks
7/10 for me. Very enjoyable listen but nothing I will come back to that often.
I loved this record. I'm kind of an 80s pop nerd....maybe that's why.
+MFW talk talk is my fucking JAM
yeah its my fetish
I've come to the conclusion that Anthony Fantano just thinks the opposite of whatever Pitchfork thinks. So edgy.
+9sgn Do a bit more research before you make that claim, silly butt
On the contrary, this album's highest score on Metacritic is from Pitchfork with the average being at 7. I'm honestly surprised this got BNM considering there's little to nothing off the VERY beaten path of indie synth pop on this album. If anything, I suspect that they may have given him a few extra points just to place him passed the BNM threshold (8.3 is close to the minimum to qualify for BNM) because they like them or if they think they'll become more of a staple artist, they'll earn more cred for pushing an artist early and continue being hailed as the end all, be all of music opinions to people like you.
They may also just like the album because y'know, not everything has a pretext.
+Ushikawa Sorry if you confuse the him/them, I was referring to Porches.
+9sgn hav you seen his review for "the pop group-Citizen Zombie"? He gave it a 9 and pitchfork gave it a 2.4, the second worst grade of the year.
HOW DID YOU NOT LIKE POOL?? That was my favorite song on the record along with mood
Groovy and moody
Bob Bobly Mood and Even a shadow were my favourite, loved the whole album though.

+Drake Johnson Ahhh yea thats right. Thanks dude!
back to the 6's woow
Way too harsh on this review. I agree with the autotune part but his slow singing and fast beat gave the album a melancholy signature sound which is somehow bad to you? This review just felt lazy too because Aaron hits some really high and low notes within the album and you someone missed it
boring, emotionless, standoffish-hipster-cool? sure, but ain't flat
sorry Brotano, ain't flat
Teach me how to get amazing skin, Anthony
***** I was just going to try cutting dairy out of my diet but I guess that works too
***** I actually might be slightly lactose intolerant, but I've always been too lazy to try and find out, I will figure out soon hopefully!
+Sh0gun Well, to start off you gotta have the best teeth in the game.
If you don't have that, at the very least, fugget about it.
go vegan bro. it works
***** I like meat too much though :(
Gonna review Porches- The House?
Apeakway Probably One Of My Most Anticipated Reviews From Anthony
The vocals are supposed to be off key .its trippy
Love his vocals. Vulnerable and very him. Looooove it. Makes me feel a lot of emotion
do a album review for:
- Benny Sings - Studio (He is a Dutch soul/hiphop singer/producer, amazing artist)
- Bilal - in another life
- Adrian Younge - Something about April 2
+GangBlud he did it too, in his second channel
Wild Nothing! New Music Album! For Listening Ears!
i love his voice
I completely agree with this review, but you should really review their debut LP Slow Dance in the Cosmos. Its easily one of the most underrated albums in the last five years or so.
are you gonna review Still Waters by Breakbot
Yeah this Anthony
+Ian Benedict yes pls, Breakthony Bottano
+Ian Benedict this
By Your Side, had so many great songs Still Waters sounds good
but none of them have stuck to me yet. what did you think about it?
Ben Oliver I feel the same way, but I think that may be due to By Your Side being fairly unique when it came out. The disco thing has gotten more popular, especially with vaporwave. By Your Side also has a greater variety of sound, both instrumentation and singers.
i found this album kinda sleepy tbh
sleepy 9/10
+Daniel Mezquita Thats what made it so good
MAYONNAISE BOTTLE LOOKIN AAS
+Poison Berry Eating Aleks
Aleks pls.
+Poison Berry Eating Aleks This review sunk just like your career
The vocals on this record are one of the best things about it! Novation Bass station has featured on nearly every electronic record release of late and frankly the vocal styling helps deflect x
Do the new one!!
I love you Anthony and I know it's just your opinion but I think that you throw away vocals a lot and I think it's kind of inconsistent too. You hated Mew, The XX, and this album but you love Death Grips and thought Rihanna is a good singer on Kanye's album? It makes me wonder how much you really appreciate vocals anyways because honestly I thought that this album was really good, very few albums make me feel like I can actually sit through the whole thing, the writing was pretty spot on, the lyrics were good, I can agree that this album is a bit sleepy (well more than a bit) but sonically it was very pleasant and it got a 5? I just think that sometimes in my opinion as much as I do agree with your music reviews sometimes your analysis can seem a bit surface level, maybe it's that or maybe you're swamped with music because I think you're missing out on some gems if they don't necessarily fit your M.O. I don't know man, I get it that Porches isn't exactly reinventing the wheel and that a lot of "dream pop" these days seems like you only really need so many albums, I get it but like I don't know I think I'd like to hear more of an explanation as to why this album did so poorly to you. (Also Mr. Maine's vocals were not flat at all, he hit every note like on every song and barely waivered throughout the album so I have no idea what you're talking about with this.)
+sorryimnottherenow He's just lazy on certain reviews. This is one of them. The 5 min runtime is a dead giveaway.
whats pretty cool is that like almost all of it was recorded in Aaron Maines apartment
are you going to review cardinal by pinegrove?
I love this album, best iv heard this year so far.
dude - thanks for introducing me to this thing, but brother, you dropped the ball: it's a major grower. laarv'ya still, obvs, forever.
i liked some songs on this album, they helped me out when i was in a tough spot
I thought the same thing about the vocals at first, but then they grew on me. I feel like they add to the mood that he's going for.
1:28 to skip the intro
Hey Anthony
I just wanted to recommend you this jazz(ish) group called Gogo Penguin, I really like their style and I want to know what you think
Thanks for the videos 😎
this guy's girlfriend, Frankie Cosmos, just put out a record that I think tips this one pretty hard. why you don't review that one bruh
what are the albums Firetano is burning? I'm a huge fan of washed out synth-led dream pop
It's supposed to be bland and flat compared to the high synthy stuff :( I love them
Review the new James Supercave album "Better Strange".
+Theywnatmysoul plz do!!!
PLEASE! @theneedledrop
@Theywnatmysoul nice profile pic 💯
Any recommendations for synth pop albums?
These edits are amazing! If this extra footage and fx are going to become a standard, I'm fucking hype!
It's def a ton more work, so I'm worried if it's sustainable.
but it's gr8 8/8 luv list favorite
Hey, can you recommend me some music with a similar dreamy instrumental sound, but better vocals/lyrics?
I love Porches and the vocal perfectly fits the sonic,it adds to the mood and it's charismatic as heck
what do the people who had the app before you and followed you when you got an account get?
I know the album is somewhat old, but can you do a review on David gilmour's new album: rattle that lock?

Can you get cymbal for android? i cant find it
Hey Anthony, do you plan to use cymbal often? Because I've been on it ever since you first mentioned it, and I always look forward to your posts
Wait, why did he mention Rob Scallon at the end? Does he have something to do with Porches?
Do you make the same number of videos for each genre of music or do you just review whatever your in the mood for at the time?

hey famtano what albums were you burning in that pile?
I feel the same about this one but damn his acoustic live performances are pure gold
Anthony, what do you think of the new Animal Collective track?
I really liked this record tbh. I didn't hate the vocals too much but they did get repetitive after a while and I didn't really dig the auto tune too much. But still, really liked this release
Review the new Bloodhound Gang Album!
How long have you been watching Anthony?
Roly Porter - Third Law
Long shot I know, could you review Josef Salvat's debut album when it comes out??

Too harsh.
When are you going to review Family Dinner Vol.2 by Snarky Puppy?
Going to check out Low Flying Hawks Kōfuku?
What's so wrong with Whirr?
+umcarainteressante, everything.
Aang Dancel Is it all about that transphobic fiasco?
I think that is what made people despise them even more, but ultimately, I find them to be a rather bland shoegaze band.
+umcarainteressante ya. and they music sucks
***** Yeah, although I wouldn't use that buzzword, I sense some hypersensitivity here.
could you do a review of the new Say Anything album "I Don't Think It Is" It dropped on equal vision Feb 5th!
Time to review Painting With...Cal Chuchesta
The new Junior Boys album has been quite overlooked by music critics but in my sense is a way better electropop record. You should give it a listen and review it, i'd love to have your thoughts on it.
Hey dude, you going to review Aesop Rock - Rings?
What was up with that shrug when you gave the score, Fantano? Did you just make it up on the spot?
Iron Flowers - Repeater I'd love to see what you think!
Can you sign those giveaway vinyls?
Is this cymbal app free?? sorry for the stupid question.
+Cristian yes it is. Join! it's a lot of fun, and a great way to find new music
Is it available for android or pc?
Marcos Encarnação Android
Fire pit was fucking savage
I love this album..... Hated it at first, about 6 listens after it became something special to me. Maybe the time of my life? It really fit where my head was at in 2016 and I still love it.
Nick Bird i couldn’t agree more. this will go down as a very nostalgic album for me
not crazy about the autotune though.
Can you review the new Radiation City record, Anthony, I think you may enjoy it.
Wonder what Antony would think of Water, which steps away from all those synths
review the frights "you are going to hate this"
please
Hey, you just declared yourself 'the holy spirit', uh, I find that sacrelicious.
Speaking of Whirr. I always wanted to ask this question, "Can an artist or band's work be enjoyed even though they did bad things in their personal lives?" For example, liken Kayne West's but not approving his behavior. I have this problem with Whirr.
You're crazy. This was a great record.
Could you review the project called NEVERMEN.
Thank god. I found this album on Pitchfork's Best New Music section, and thought I must be going insane.
I watched this review 2 nights ago. Last night I found the cd at a Warehouse Music in Santa Cruz for $2! Thank you fellow music nerd!
Maya actually playing bass on the album would have made the album much better she had just joined when they were halfway done with the album.
Review The 1975's upcoming album? Released next week. They went to number one in the UK with their debut album. They're pretty cool dudes.
I don't remember where, but I recall him mentioning that he categorized them as another bland and boring indie rock band he didn't care for. Might be on his Twitter page or on a YUNOREVIEW
That's a shame actually, because I'd suggest they're so far from bland. They actually have a variety of different musical styles and genres they take from and blend it into something fairly unique. Sure, some of their songs can sound quite generic with the catchy guitar hooks and the catchy vocals, but a lot of their electronic stuff is fairly experimental, and they've said the new album is going to be quite eclectic, so I hope Anthony gives them a second chance. I honestly believe he might quite enjoy it.
+Ollie Staples I've heard every LP and EP besides this new one of theirs, and honestly, some of their stuff is actually pretty great. The 1975 was kinda like one of those gateway bands into underground music for me, and once I listened to way more music I stopped listening to them. But I agree, some of their more experimental stuff is pretty good (I still really love the song "Antichrist", it's probably the best one they've ever written). But tbh, I think it's unlikely that Fantano would give them a shot, I hope he does like he has for MGMT and Cage the Elephant, both of which are pretty mainstream indie-ish bands that could be classified as bland that have actually made some pretty great albums that he took notice of. But it's still kinda unlikely IMO.
Chocolate is the worst song of the decade so far. Don't care.
Review starts at 1:27
cymbal isn't on the play store :(
the whirr call out was fantastic + fiery thank u
you're a cool guy anthony, it's always nice to hear from ya
Hey man would love a classics review of The Clash - London Calling
did you do khalifa?
how do u spell that app name
review tlop
+Diesker lol nice joke
***** no
I think the only way the madness of people talking about Kanye's shitty album is if Cal reviews it.
Then EVERYONE will be happy.
dusk565 i liked it
dusk565 no, shut up
After noticing the vocal pitch issues I couldn't not pay attention to them, haha. Despite that though, I still really enjoyed a lot of the album in terms of Maine's overall songwriting and production talent
wake up tony wake up!!! we need to get that paper!!! 10/10 review it again!!!
