In Britain this album knocked Bridge Over Trouble Waters off the number one spot. No radio play, no TV and the music press giving them one star reviews. Word of mouth classic. Glad you like it.
Wow, hope you watch to the end of the series, literally changed my life a bit. So good. Black Sabbath definitely changed the game. Have a great day man!
Geezer Butler explains the song’s heavy-duty science fiction premise thusly: “Ozzy came up with the title ‘Iron Man’ and I wrote it about this guy who’s blasted off into space and he sees the future of the world, which isn’t very good. Then he goes through a magnetic storm on the way back and is turned to iron. He’s trying to warn everyone about the future of the world, but he can’t speak, so everyone is taking the mickey out of him all the time, and he just doesn’t care in the end. The Iron Man’s destruction of the people who ignore and mock him unwittingly fulfills his own vision.”
It's a song about a man who travels back in time to warn the present people about impending doom. When he time travels, he enters a magnetic field and is turned to "Iron Man". He tries to warn them, but the shun him and treat him poorly. So he eventually ends up turning on the people who shun him, and brings down humanity. It's interesting, because it is a time paradox. He goes to warn the past about their fate, but in the end, he was the cause of their fate all along. Brilliant song Edit: I'd love if you pinned this! So that others know the story of the song! It's not just some villanous man made of iron destroying mankind, it's so much deeper.
I have listened to this song literally a million times. The best thing about this song is not only the tempo changes but some of the riffs and runs the band is doing. They will be in an assending riff and then it instantly goes into a desending riff. It does this several times during the song. Playing the song as a musician is really tricky. There is a show on VH 1 or probably UA-cam that looks at classic albums and they do the album Paranoid. It will give you more insight as a musician. Great job, love watching your reaction to Black Sabbath. It is insane how awesome they are. 🤙
One of the best reaction videos you've ever done. Early on... Just a guy listening to tunes that someone said to give an ear to. So much like sitting w/ my friends and being swept up by the experience back in the day. This is why I "liked " and "followed" you in the first place.
I was about 23 at the time, and never really heard "heavy metal" yet. My best friend at the time Mark (bass player for Twisted Sister) wanted me to hear that kind of music which he loved. Well, they came on stage with Iron Man & it was LOUD, and I was floored. I was transfixed in my seat, and couldn't move. What a show!!!! I love Ozzie...
One of the things I love about this song is Geezer's bass. There are parts of the song when he creates a secondary percussion beat while playing his complicated bass riffs. Amazing!
I was noticing that too! I love how he doesn't use the base as just a foundation, he seems to be dancing around his instrument through some of these tracks and I dig it! :)
Thank you for watching, from now on I will be posting once a day every single weekday! Getting you guys through that work week, hope you enjoyed the video! Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe, hope you guys have a great day!
You are right. It changed MY world. Ozzy - vox Tony Iommi - guitar Geezer Butler - bass Bill Ward - drums. When this album came out, it brought tears to my eyes because I knew my life would never be the same again. In fact, in 1974, I bought a new Gibson SG Standard because of Iommi. IMHO, the best Sabbath albums (in no particular order) The debut album, of course this one, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol 4, Sabnbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage. Honorable mention for Technical Ecstacy. You can't go wrong with original lineup Sabbath.
I remember summer1974 visiting my cousin in Copenhagen for the summer. We played this over and over again in his bedroom along with Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Suzi Quatro and all the rest.. driving the neighbors craaaazy!
The album was very influential, but it was also very much a product of its time, reflects societal and music trends that were strong in society at the time.
Am glad that you dig Sabbath. And think about this, if there was no Sabbath, Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin, you would not have a majority of the rock or metal bands over the past 50 years. Too many bands and artists to even try to name come from those 3 bands.
you are a guitarist. you should know , Toni Iommi, the guitarist, a left handed guitarist, when he was young cut off the end of his two middle fingers on his right hand. He plays with plastic tips on his right hand (fretboard hand). A totally unique guitarist.
Best album ever recorded ! I took to hits of cid and only had 1 8 track tape that didn't get ate up and this paranoid album was the only one left sooo all night long that tape played. No regrets and still love this shit
Geezer never gets as much praise as he deserves. Bill lays the beat down, Geezer constructs the backbone, Toni reaches for the sky, and Ozzie howls at the moon!
Creative genius Tony Iommi (eye-OWE-me) invented metal and wrote virtually all of the music for Sabbath. The lyrics were by the great bass player, Geezer Butler.
I am so happy I saw Sabbath live. I don’t play any instruments but watching Geezer, I was mesmerized by his playing, he plays bass as if it were a guitar... his hands were flying across the strings and it was sooo clean, I recognized I was was witnessing a master of his craft. And Bill Ward was incredibly hypnotic in his rhythms. And Tony and Ozzy taking it to soaring heights... wow, just wow. Another completely different vibe is Planet Caravan, this band gives me chills.
"Black Sabbath", "Paranoid", "Master of Realty" & "Vol. 4" These are the albums that truly brought HEAVY METAL to the masses. Without these albums there would be no HEAVY METAL.
I'd before only listened to the whole album, so thank you for this. And when you're done listening to specific songs, please listen to the whole thing start to finish. The whole thing is amazing, it'll take you somewhere.
I have to say I am having so much fun watching these videos with you and with you and Alex. In a way its like experiencing some of my favorite songs for the first time again. Thank you both for doing this and keep it up.
Hi Andy, the last album '13' but I was actually talking about their last world tour titled 'The End' in which they play all of this old stuff in particular. Check it out on you tube you wont believe how good they where at the end in their late 60s, early 70 years of age, I'm just about to turn 61 and I picked up my first Sabbath album at 12yo in 1970 and still listen to all their stuff.
Oz Ale I’ll have to check it out! I actually bought tickets to Ozzy’s final tour for 2019!! So I’m super excited to see him live, gonna have to educate myself on the music and whatnot before then though!! 😁
My very first concert at age 14 was black sabbath. I saw them a few years ago and I’m in my 50s. I think I like them better the second time because of the drum solo
Bassist Geezer was the most literate (and perhaps spiritual) of the band and wrote 80%+ of the lyrics, with Ozzy adding bits here and there as well as the lyrical melodies. Guitarist Tony was the riff master, muscle and disciplinarian of the band. Tony was/is a lefty who lost the tips to inside fingers of his left hand in a shop accident prior to forming Sabbath. To this day he always plays with rubber tips on those two fingers as well as light strings. Sabbath albums aren't really concept albums as such a way as in the Floyd manner. So individual songs are rarely out of place or problemental. As the albums progressed from Paranoid so did their budgets as well as falling into the excess and trappings of rock stardom. After the Paranoid album comes Master of Reality. The inner/outer struggles of man are represented in songs such as... * Orchid / Lord of this World * After Forever * Solitude
Wow thanks for the info, I'm totally digging the album immensely right now and can't wait to keep it going, I'll definitely be sure to react to the next album, thanks for watching man I appreciate it!
Try cozy Powell "dance with the devil", Cozy Powell was an English rock drummer, who made his name with many major rock bands and artists like The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Gary Moore, Robert Plant, Brian May, Whitesnake, Emerson, Lake & Powell, and Black Sabbath. Powell had appeared on at least 66 albums, with contributions on many other recordings.
Yep, I grew up with this stuff, you are on a wondrous journey and it makes me happy to watch someone discover the great music that has been with me throughout my life.
Dude you cannot imagine 1969!🤯 First albums for Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, the Allman Brothers, Bob Seger, Cream, and Led Zeppelin, just to mention a few! 😲 I was 17! What a great time to be alive! 🤗
it was a great to be a teenager and into music. I was in the military back then and you could hear this music coming from all the rooms in the barracks.Rock and Roll and Motown back then
Sabbath are the best band, my fave along with Floyd. I grew up as a teen in the 80s listening to them and still do to this day. Music is still relevant! Fun fact Bill Ward and Geezer are both vegans!
Yes son all four members are gods they changed history in my opinion geezer is the best bass player ever no one played like him at the time i dont know if ward on drums is better than bonham of led zeplin its a toss up for no.1 and the badass iommi oh my god mr heavy metal he started it all and ozzy loldo i need say more.i c u like drums alot listhen to the first thrash metal song .symtom of the universe.could be thier best song.i enjoy your reactions .scott
Matt Lowe Thanks for sharing your opinion man, these musicians are indeed amazing! And I’ll be sure to check it out man thanks for the request! Glad you’re liking the content! 🔥
Thanks I'll look into it, how do you feel about the Master of Reality album? Like three other people have asked me to react to that one next. Thanks for watching by the way, hope you have a great night!
I think the 1st Album Black Sabbath is a great Album on most sites it is rate 2nd behind Paranoid. The reason I feel its rated 2nd its sounds similar to Paranoid and it is also in standard tuning (E A D G B E) . After these 2 Albums, most others Albums are tunned lower and gives a heavier doom/stoner sound Masters of Reality. Quote from one of the rating sites. If Black Sabbath never released an album after their 1970 debut Album Black Sabbath, they'd still be legends. Cheers
Going back to some of you old videos, you remind myself in late 70'sand early 80's getting into Sabbath, Rush, Yes, Blue Oyster Cult for the first time. First run, let it wash over with lyrics, second run guitar in depth as I play as well. Next time bass, then drums . Enjoy the ride young Jedi)) My best friend played bass and had the solo section down, I faked my way through the guitar solo. 😁
The Guitarist is Tommy Iommi, the Drummer is Bill Ward , the Bassis is Geezer Butler. More Black Sabbath songs to check out is The Wizard from their self entitled Album, Children Of The Grave from Master Of Reality.
Bill Ward,an absolute beast. At the live shows,he would batter those skins like he hated someone, but what a sticksman, one of the best. Check out Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the title track of the album and try to count how many songs there are in one.
Closing down the 39th signal battalion in Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam in spring of 1973 and two weeks later seeing Sabbath in Manchester England, front row tickets.
I really enjoy when a young man discover artist like Black Sabath. I woud like to have that oportunity, if I never heard Bethoven I would feel the same.
I remember when I was in college in Hawaii, my room mate and I would announce to the other dorm residents we were coming out to play basketball that night. We would chuckle how intimidated our opponents must be by this song turned up to eleven on my stereo.
Awesome reaction and great to see you enjoy such a classic! I never knew the story behind Ozzy comic up with the song. As a nerd I always thought it was exclusively about the comic book character. When Iron Man originally appeared in the comics, it wasn’t entirely like he’s depicted in the movies. His armor was made of small scales held rigid in a magnetic field.... like in the song. He traveled time and even about him killing people was addressed. In the future one of his descendants who had the armor used it for evil. In the song I always pictured he’s trapped in his armor as a statue, no one realizing he’s inside, and when he does get free he snaps. Don’t know if it was parallel or Ozzy was influenced by the comic but for a nerd like me it’s a great song regardless. Awesome :)
I named my pit bull "Iron Man" when I was eighteen, my mom's idea 'cause he was the runt of the litter and I took him into my room and fed him 'till he could get milk and not be beat up by his brothers and sisters fighting' for that nipple! I created a monster! My mom would read all their, (Sabbath) lyrics because they were so controversial, and she got it!
Wow that's awesome, it's fantastic that your Mom was humble enough to read the lyrics and interpret the concepts before assuming the worst and holding them to a low standard. That's fantastic, many people are not that open minded! I'm glad your liking the videos man, thanks for stopping by! :)
I had the "cool mom"! She waited in line for concert tickets when they were on sale during school! I saw, Sabbath,(with Ozzy), Scorpions, Judas Priest, all the greats starting at 14!
Ozzy actually explained the story behind the lyrics in an interview. I have included a link below to the youtube video at the time marker where the question is asked. Feel free to listen to the whole interview as well. Lots of great stuff. ua-cam.com/video/4isrVLnyZ5w/v-deo.html P.S. If you want a good laugh, turn on the automatically generated subtitles for any Ozzy interview.
This was done a ways back but I just watched your reaction today. This is an album like many back in the day where a side or a whole album was tied together in concept. Dood I don't like to sound like broken record but once again I still don't see a alice cooper reaction. Welcome to my nightmare is great and album ties songs together. Black widow , Stephen etc. Alice cooper had a really good band and I'm telling you again listen to that or you should first hear halo of flies on the killer album. I really think you'll be surprised! And growing up this was the guy to see in concert for a stage show. Which by today's standards is a little corny but back then you to alice and ozzie, kiss also had a dynamic show spitting fire and having fun. Anyway great reaction by the way. Alex and Andy are my favorite reactors lol. I wouldn't steer you wrong. Styx also especially mr. Roto which was incorporated into a show into that tour. Castle walls/ man in the wilderness to great styx songs maybe there best incorporated into grand illusion album. Anyway keep ghb oing guys! Love to see youngsters appreciate some really great music and always brings back concert memories like black sabbath here.
9:36 - I know it changed MY life anyway. I was maybe 9 years old and my dad had the record. I'd sit with his headphones and get lost in the scary, picturesque, doom-filled sonic landscape they made. I was terrified and fascinated, like I was really experiencing other 9 year olds didn't.
How come British bands are so good? Cream, The Beatles, The Who, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, The Stone Roses, Elbow. What do you mean you haven't heard of the last three? Well, check them out! While you're at it check out Gong, Stray, Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come.
One of the things to remember when you make the statement," how come British bands are so good. " To answer that question all you have to do is listen or read what they said back in the 70's. " my music gods are Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Walter Johnson to just name a few. Americans get laughed at for our culture. It is true we can be loud, crude, and rude at times. But our culture did give the world Jazz, Country, Rock of all shapes and sizes, Rap just in music alone. So when you go to Europe and Asia and see the great art and culture, think of this. They have had over 2000 years to come up with their great works of art, and this infant of a country of just over 200 years has not done so bad on the arts and culture scene with less than one tenth the time.
Just some random suggestions I thought I'd put here -- "I Got a Line on You" by Spirit; "Monkey Man" by the Rolling Stones, "Why Dontcha" by West, Bruce, and Laing; "Rock and Roll Queen" by Mott the Hoople; "Deserted Cities of the Heart" by Cream, " The Story in Your Eyes" by The Moody Blues; "Talk to Ya Later" by The Tubes. All GREAT rocking songs.
Hey Andy good to see the younger generation appreciate sabbath..I'm 48 and bought my first sabbath album when I was in 1st grade! I know every song front to back..war pigs, paranoid, iron man are good songs but it's the "commercial" sabbath..listen to "the wizard".."supernaut".. "sabbra caddabra" ..or "symptom of the universe" just to name a few..if you liked those commercial sabbath songs, then these ones will change your life forever! Btw,to answer your question, bill ward is sabbaths drummer..he rivals John Bonham for number one drummer in the history of the universe!!!
It's so salty for 1970! 'Why should we even care' cracks me up, then followed by a Nirvana riff. Another cartoon-style track is Vambo Marble Eye by Alex Harvey.
Hey Andy. I first heard this album when it came out... I was in high school at the time. My friend Clarke and I rocked out to the entire album, and yes... it changed the world. Iron Man was, and still is, one of my all time favorite songs. If you listen close enough, you will hear the timing changes, and I know you heard the key changes, but the hard driving base line and repeating theme carry the song along. A tale of a Hero scorned, who enacts his revenge. I do not know if you have heard this, but back when this album debuted, it and several others were accused of having satanic messages inserted, if one played them backwards. They don't, but the Christians of the era were so fearful of the kind of rock that was becoming popular that they just HAD to associate it with the Devil in some manner. Personally, I feel I lived through the greatest era of music of all time. A period of innovation in music and lyrical inventions that has yet to be surpassed by any other kind of music. A music that, even now, transcends it's own creation era. Most of the music of the era are still relevant and powerful to this day. Tell me I am wrong, I will call you a liar. speaking, Frank-ly
# Steve Marriot of the small faces " #Itchy Coo Park " 1967 where British jazz artists blended their love of the blues creating British rock. He was friends with David Bowie, Rod Stewart, tried out for replacement guitarist of the rolling Stones and was accepted by everyone except Mick Jagger didn't want to be up staged and said no. Led Zeppelin heavily borrowed from Steve's version of a Wlly Dixon song "You Need Lovin" to create Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love". Steve's later band Humble Pie which included Peter Frampton recorded " #Thirty Days In The Hole " Rock Legends
Sammy Beck Yeah he’s helped provide backstory on numerous songs at this point haha, you’re good too though, more perspective can only help the big picture! 🔥🔥
I'm Also British And Related To Anthony Frank Iommi Or As You Know Tony Iommi

Paranoid was played heavily on radio lol. Big hit here in Australia where I’m from
@@mike04574 Only once it had charted - they had no choice. Also I did say 'album'.

Such an amazing concept, I loved every song in this album, so timeless. Can’t wait to raise my future kids to it. 🔥
He can’t speak? Or is it just that nobody was listening?

Hahaha! That’s awesome! 😁
I like that you pause it to comment throughout. It's so much fun to see your reactions and comments.
And Black Sabbath said, Let There Be Heavy Metal!
In the seventies, I remember that radio DJs used to couple this song with Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" in play sets.
The album was very influential, but it was also very much a product of its time, reflects societal and music trends that were strong in society at the time.
I love when you stop it. The reason I watch ur vids. It makes me relive the my first time
Black Sabbath is considered one of the founders of metal. Bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, and others, all say Sabbath got them into music .
My favourite Black Sabbath album is volume 4.
SUPERNAUT rules

This is one of my favorite albums of all time!
Of course this plays out the end credits of the Iron Man movie.
Saw''em live back in the day. 15 ft Iron man strode through the crowd. General admission. Great to be a teen in the 70s.
Me too saw them In Montreal Forum 4.50$ for 3 band !
I first heard Ironman in 1980 ….still gives me chills
I've always interpreted this song as referring to Revelations in the Bible and Jesus Christ as Iron Man. Thorns in his head.

I really enjoy watching your Sabbath edjumacation.

it was a great to be a teenager and into music.
@Vegan Girl
Geezer and his wife Gloria are also known to be active in animal rescue.
Damn. Floyd and Sabbath are a great couple of bands to be your favorites. Floyd and Rush are my "go to's"...

Thanks for sharing your opinion man, these musicians are indeed amazing! And I’ll be sure to check it out man thanks for the request! Glad you’re liking the content! 🔥
This was our metal in the 70's--lol
Would be nice if you did the 1st Black Sabbath album after this one. The Album is named Black Sabbath :). Another great reaction Cheers
The vibe I got from this song was like watching those Japanese sci-fi movies of the early '60s like Godzilla only a huge Iron Man. lol
This song gave me a total eargasm the first time I heard it. LOL
You said this changed the world, it certainly changed my world.
To think that this was originally named "iron Bloke". Doesn't have quite the same feeling does it?
420since1974
Iron Man is definitely the name to go for this jam! 🔥
LMAO!! No not really.😆😂
I love your enthusiasm for the older music.
Awesome :)
Great one dude thank you!! 😍
You said 'bass drum' that's great. I can't stand 'kick' really enjoying this Sabbath stuff.
This song was used as the entrance theme for the wrestling tag team The Road Warriors back in the 80s!
Awesomeness!! Iron Man is freakin jammin!! One of the best Black Sabbath songs IMO!! Head bangin !!
That’s fucking awesome! Glad to hear you had a Mom that supported your liking of some of the more influential artists during that time! Cheers man!
I heard this on the radio and went out to get it right away. Ozzie on the run. Saw them a year later. Man Ozzie tears a place up.
Glad you discovered it. Ozzie longevity tell the tale. Try Shout At The Moon
Ozzy is so funny, it's VERY hard to understand him when he talks, but damn, when he sings....
Not too shabby for an album/song that's over 50 yrs. old.
Ozzy actually explained the story behind the lyrics in an interview. I have included a link below to the youtube video at the time marker where the question is asked. Feel free to listen to the whole interview as well. Lots of great stuff.

P.S. If you want a good laugh, turn on the automatically generated subtitles for any Ozzy interview.
Seen them at Cobo Hall in Detroit early 70’s. What more can I say, it’s major Black Sabbath live. Goose bums throughout the whole fantastic concert!!
Only great music can do that.
This was incredible guitar playing and drums
Fairly good song that we used to only listen to when we got really drunk.
Listen to SABOTAGE album. PERIOD.
A tip for you of lesser known bands, Budgie, check out the song 'young is a world'.
@@MrShadowofthewind I thank you for your recommendation, happy to say I'm already a fan of Budgie.
Lol I do the same thing rewind takes a hour to listen to a 5 min song LMAO
99% of all 'first riffs learned are 'Smoke on the Water' or 'Iron Man' pre-2000
My fav sabbath song since i was a lil kid!
Great interview, Face to Face with Rick Wakeman, Tony Iommi
Check out the iron man parody 'santa claus'.😂
Love it!
we smoked alot of weed listening to this back in the 70's
Some of us still do.
@@iamperplexed4695 I like it. I still do too
1977 I went to concerning with Black Sabbath, Ac/Dc started up.... not bad!
Dude......you gotta redo this with your Partner in crime... Alex.....and less interruptions......LOL
420since1974 explains that same story only better than I did. I just noticed it when I scrolled up
Sammy Beck
Yeah he’s helped provide backstory on numerous songs at this point haha, you’re good too though, more perspective can only help the big picture! 🔥🔥
