Good one! She is great! Had the pleasure of working with her show twice about 7 or 8 years apart. Always a pro,. Sets up and wires her own gear. The nicest lady ever. I wish I could have given her a hug after Lou died. She wrote the best article about him in Rolling Stone afterward. He was so lucky to have her there for his final days. One of the most uniquely creative souls around.

"Bright Red" is my fav album ever. When I listen to it I feel like being in reality and dreaming simultaneously. Incredibly sonicly, and thought-provoking. I just found out there was a vinyl reissue last year, I just ordered my copy on eBay. I waited 20 years for the vinyl edition!

I picked up “O, Superman” within the first week of its release as a 12” 45 and I was hooked. It was up there with Zappa’s “Thing Fish.” Laurie was an instant addiction which, contrary to popular misbelief, heroin is not.

Saw Laurie _so_ many times back in the day. I first learned about her when they showed the video for O Superman at the S.F. King Crimson gig for Discipline back in 1981. I went right out and found the 45. Saw her tour for Big Science after that and through the mid 90's. You just never knew what you were in for. And yes, saw her tour this one as well, this one a "one person" show. Yes, while I felt this album was a bit too Eno for my tastes, it's got some gems. The stage bit definitely translated. My favorite is Beautiful Pea Green Boat, probably because of the way it was presented live. Still gives me shivers.

My dad told me he saw her live on this tour and she shared a story of near-death in the Himalayas. Do you recall that story?

    • @slidetek

@@MakeWeirdMusic @Make Weird Music Oh fuck yes! This is where the song *Tightrope* came from. But it was done differently than on the album. She was in the Himalayas climbing/meditating/inspirationalizing and got some sort of viral infection. She had a serious fever and was going to die if they couldn't get her to a Western hospital. Don't remember if there was an explanation why she couldn't medivac, but they had to carry her out of the valley and down the mountain. _One of the sherpas talked to her nonstop._ She said if it wasn't for him, she knows she would have died. His voice created a tightrope of sound, connecting to her soul, for her to follow. She demonstrates by walking a laser light as if a high-balance act. This is where the relatives and boardwalk hallucinations came in IIRC.

Anthony, Thanks for posting this. I am such a long time fan of Laurie, had the pleasure of meeting Laurie and Lou a couple of times. Saw her live 4 times. I think she is such a massive talent. Bright Red is one of many of her fine releases - I love most all of them. BTW, I have come to your site for multiple connections like Crimson, Residents, Laurie, and many others. Thank you for all you do.

This reminds me that I inadvertently terrified my daughter by exposing her to Langue D’Amour at a tender age. The bit about the sharks walking into peoples houses “with their big, white teeth”, delivered in Laurie Anderson’s intimate, whispering voice, stuck with her horribly and she brings it up A LOT as an example of sub-optimal parenting on my behalf. Although she quite likes the track now, apparently...

My very first ever single was O, Superman. That hooked me on Laurie Anderson and weird music in general. I saw her life 25 years ago in Zurich (not sure, which program that was, but it was great). Love Bright Red and have played it many times. But it has been awhile (I.e. many years), so I need to listen to it again (and probably the rest of her albums while I’m at it). Strange Angels is great too, I also have United States Live on vinyl, might give that a spin again.

It goes to figure that MWM would be the 1st to do an adequate appraisal of Laurie Anderson. Wife and I appreciate most of the unusual suspects that you mentioned, Residents, Eno, BelewReed. Have many times though that she may have been one of the “Eyeballs “ but one can never know.
“THIS LONG THIN LINE. THIS SONG LINE. THIS SHOUT. THIS TIGHTROPE. THE ONLY THING THAT BINDS ME TO THE TURNING WORLD BELOW.”
Our favorite song by Laurie is still, “Sharkey’s Day “ . We go right to it in tough times and it always leaves us feeling like everything is going to be hands off manageable with reason to smile.

    • @MakeWeirdMusic

I actually have wondered about Laurie being in The Residents at times. During The Commercial Album era, there were clearly women wearing tuxes.
My dad sent me a text recently about Bright Red:
"One thing that you may or may not know about Bright Red; when I saw her perform it, she talked about her trip to Dharamshala, India, where she was to visit with the Dalai Lama. During her journey into the Himalayas, she contracted a really bad case of altitude sickness and almost died. The voice of her guide was the only thing that kept her connected to her body as they turned to head back down the mountains. That’s why the album is so dark, and that’s the meaning of the red line emanating from her hand on the cover of the album. She was holding on by a bright red string that was her life."

I really like your thoughts on the album.
Puppet Motel sounds like a video by Brothers Quay looks: Creepy as hell!
I find the lyrics of Bright Red (the song) very sinister as well. "Dis she fall or was she pushed?...come here little girl, get into the car...your shirt on my chair, your despair in my heart, bright red...I never leave you". I actually was convinced that the male voice was her as well. Never realized that it´s Arto Lindsay. I have also heard that the song was at one time used for a car commercial, but I can´t find anything about it..
During the past two weeks I was doing some impromptu mixes with Laurie´s music and I quite like the outcome so far. Especially the ambient tracks on bright red lend themselves so well to sync them to dub. If you´re interested you might want to check out the three songs on my channel.
