When I see youngsters like you working so hard to keep this wonderful music alive I know it will live on for years to come to thrill future generations. And that feels real good.
I think of Proclamation as one of Giant's "easier" progressive songs and it may be, but there is nothing safe about Ray's bass part. He plays off the beats, he leaves beats empty, he does not fill chords but transforms them. Quite an amazing part. And I never realized how much that is so in this song, in 45 years of listening, until hearing this bass cover. Nice job!
@@baddogmaine I think it's funky, and Stevie wonder esque, but you're right it does go into some odd time prog ij the middle and the second part with the vocals and the weird scales is totally prog
@@ladywilhelminabass Gentle Giant are, in my opinion, the greatest prog band ever because they had such amazing range. And Ray Shulman was the greatest rock bass player, because he was technically incredible and musically creative. Check out the bass line in this link. And Shulman is the violinist too. If you get into Gentle Giant and Ray Shulman the amazement never stops. ua-cam.com/video/UpsRnkzUhfc/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
That was awesome! Ray was something out of this world. Bass and acoustic guitars, trumpet, violin, and probably any other instrument he had a time to familiarize with.
Awesome 👏 I saw them live during the 🐙 Octopus album tour. Knots was phenomenal live. Great choice for a cover !!! Before the days of sequencers, when you actually had to play something 🎼.
Thanks a lot. I recreated and transcribed the bassline from a gentle Giant wiki site that had very old sheets. I have a Google docs but I'm not sure if this song is in there. You can ask if yo need it!
The rhythm that you are playing is fantastic. Yes, it's in 4/4 time, but I'm talking about the syncopation and all that. You GOT it!@@ladywilhelminabass
Well done. However, in the beginning, you're off a bit. Ray did a subtle thing that is difficult to explain, but you can hear in that phrase (which repeats twice but with a slightly different timing for one note of the phrase) how you're about a quarter beat behind starting at 0:52. You're slightly behind the note. When he modulates up at 1:11, you're behind again. Listen again carefully...
@@charlesdp well thank you for the acknowledgement. I have been playing this song for like 6 years though, I once played it live at a recital but that's it

Great job on a complicated Giant song.
As good as Ray Shulman himself.
It's not that complicated, not compared to other songs! Check out thiago consorti

Now I know what you're talking about! Yes the octave is upbeat but he plays it on downbeat once. I was trying to copy the recording here
