I LOOOOVE watching people discover Aesop, he has been my favorite artist for just about 16 years. I love his music because his songs are so metaphorical that depending on the stage of your life his songs can mean different things for different people. Aesop is a real masterclass not to be compared to anyone else.
Aesop Rock is by far the most abstract lyricist. It takes years for someone to master that style. It’s harder to master than an off-beat old school Cage/Eminem flow.
I can count on 1 hand the number of Aesop rock songs that everyone can understand off the first listen. Don't feel bad for not being able to keep up hahahahah
How many fingers on that hand? 2. Though, I think the deepest understanding is to not understand, but to take in the whole composition and "see the painting" without focusing on the brush strokes.
you nailed the listening, you are clearly a lyrical coinsure, NO ONE gets it first time through, that is the beauty of his songs. Deep AF. Check out some of his new album ITS, I love Kyanite Toothpick
You did your best, man. Considering you are new to Aesop I think you did well, homie. When I first got into Aesop I was like "WHAT IS THIS DUDE ON?!?" But the more I listened to his work the more it just clicked. He's a one of a kind gift to music, that's for sure. Really hope you do more of his stuff. I'd love to see you react to something off his The Impossible Kid album like Rings or Dorks. His newer stuff is definitely a lot easier to digest.
❤️🔥 Yea I'm definitely enjoying the discovery of it. I kind of like having to think and really try to catch things. This is when art is at its best. 💯
lyric from track to get u stoked.. "what r we to heart huckabee, ART FUCKERY SUDDENLY?...& I ran w/ a chain of commands & the jetpack strapped where the backstab lands if it can... to MY PEOPLE WHO KEEP AN IMPRESSIVE WINGSPAN EVEN WHEN THE CUBICLE SHRINKS'
"Maybe I'm slow" Dude actually manages to react to lyrics and visuals when hearing Aes for the first time and thinks he's slow. Yes, even with the lyrics printed out in front of him. Every other reaction vid is just someone giving stank face and going "this dude is crazy!"
if you wanna keep up with Aesop, you gotta pause after each bar. It's not something anyone can just understand on first listen and keep up with. Don't feel bad if you can't catch everything first listen and fully understand, he's like that for everyone. The people who like him are the people who take time to understand, the people who don't are the people who don't want to take the time to learn.
I feel you there. I went and read the lyrics and you're so right. I know some don't like a reaction that's too long, so I do my best to keep it moderate. But I think deep dives may have to be had in videos. I may offer some for my members in the future
First time watching. Saw your initial reaction to Aes and had to find more. Great job articulating your experiences so far! Personally I have trouble keeping track of time, subsequently I've learned how vauable time really is. Aesop Rock is undoubtedly an artist that deserves time and attention - a new perspective for some, and a wealth of imagery for the creative mind.
I'm new to Aesop Rock too. Thanks for breaking it down because I was having a hard time keeping up and understanding what he was saying! I think you did an amazing job!
just knowing there's ppl new to aes listening has me happy dancing! & i promise u, u'll get ur fave lines for diff songs & then break that song into 3 word increments, LOVING THE FEEL OF PRESSING REWIND. lines in songs that i didn't get or would'v left out in an abridged version, DECADE LATER I'LL HEAR IT IN A WAY THAT IT BEOMES MOST MOVING LINE IN TRACK!! So when i hear a wonky line i know it's a special treasurre hunt to go on. if u want to hear more of him faster than waiting for someone HipHopJunkie is my fave aes reactor, he gets aes & his preteen son makes wise comments about aes. they both get stank face soo often & Black(ish) University's breakdown are about an hour a song & he looks at each bar from multiple angles BUT JAVI LOBBY'S FACE OF WONDER IS PRICELESS
@@theaniebeanie123 if you like more-than-superficial art, you found a great source right here. An artist that'll make you self reflect every couple listens, as you discover more. Your takeaway changes over time, as you change. I compare his to reading Neitzsche as a 14, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 27, 28, 29 ,30, 35,36, 37, 40, 41 year-old... then now. Hits differently every time, relative to your experience.
@@RavenousCatalyst594 I don't know if you've seen Blackish university, but he has legit hour+ long videos reacting to Aes because he pauses to break down every bar as a first time listener. It can be hard to sit through an hour long video, but I enjoy the way he connects the dots, and he himself is a very educated middle aged man so he gets a lot of the references Aes makes.
If you do deep dives, make sure you look up stuff up on the fly (words, phrases, etc) cause there is a TON of references that predate even my time by a few years and I started listening to him in 2002. The cool part about the characters are they are all interchangable persoanlities. Like Lion Hearted, Pig Headed, etc.. This song is really hard the fist pass, you gotta listen to this a ton of times before it all clicks.
You're doin aight man, I've been hearing this song for over 10 years and I'm still not sure what he's on about :V Just an idea: If I ever do a reaction video, I'd do it for Aesop, and I'd do it like this: first part, bump the song, minimal pauses, just get the feel of it. Then listen to it again for a few times, with lyrics on [this part would be sped up in the actual video] and then discuss some bars or wordplays I found interesting.
Man, I hate that Rhymesayers used to use the clean tracks in their music videos. Really cuts the balls off a couple lines in this song. Same thing with the video for Brother Ali's Uncle Sam Goddamn.
Toss a Lil intro in there big dog, let us know who u are and what the channel is about! Don't make it longer than like 15 sec tho there's a real sweet spot
the version of this over Sufjan Stephens beat, imo, is waaayyy better. the diff beat allows the words to be felt diff. BEST VERSION IS HIM DOING LIVE at ZeroFriends. HE SPITS CLEARER LIVE & that VERSION HAS GR8 CLOSEUP CAMERA & AUDIO QUALITY. I did video of just 1st 8 bars of this song & it's 8+mins soooo deep dives r FUN & aes knows how to help folks Float! The Sufjan Stephens was made after aes released cd w/ just his vocals tracks & cd w/ just instrumentals & he asked folks to 'build their own' mix of songs. Someone put a bunch of Aesop's vocals over Portisehead's whole album. it's supernaturally amazing
I'll forever be impressed by the fact that this song wasn't Aesop's peak. It wasn't even close.
Although I dig some of his other sht more, especially self-produced stuff off TIK or SWFG, I do think this song is his strongest lyrically.
@@durere you can say that about each his song, lol. That dude has phenomenal cryptic writing.
Just the beginning if ya can even believe it

youre doing great catching bars on a first listen. Aesop rock deep dives are so fun a rewarding because it really is just so dense and deep

Rhymesayers has the best stable of lyricists anywhere, but their business practices are a little fucked up sometimes. That's how they lost Prof.
