How Moons Are Colliding in Elite Dangerous

  • Two moons collided in spectacular fashion, while two other moons in our Actual solar system also appear to be on a collision course.
One is a bug created by the Stellar Forge and the other is the exact same scenario but with a different outcome.
Though there are glitches with Elite's galaxy generating tool, some of these "glitches" can actually be explained with recent astronomical discoveries.
This is the first part of a series that will attempt to explain these crazy results from Elite’s Stellar Forge.

Imagine if supernovas were in the game. You've made it almost to the galactic core, then all of the sudden the star you just jumped to is about to explode.

I remember dropping a cargo container of quiche and Pranav Antal propaganda at a local black hole, hoping to enlighten some inter dimensional beings. That night I actually dreamt(IRL) them chanting “one of us, one of us...”. Emergent gameplay or demon possession... either way this game is amazing.

One of the best glitches is the moon that is orbiting super close to it's earth like planet. It's super trippy to visit because it orbits so fast.

I once found myself on a tiny moon orbiting it's earth-like world in under a minute, it was incredible to watch the planet rise and set so fast but I have to admit, since I play exclusively in VR, it actually made me dizzy as something that should be slow and steady was racing around me.

supernovas, gamma ray bursts, comets, proto stars with accretion disks, specific features on planets that are worth exploration data (not just the planets themselves), srv based exploration for data of said features, stellar collisions. These are just a few off the top of my head I wish elite had for explorers. Make it beautiful but also give it agency so that cmdrs have a reason to explore. Maybe something like 'scan 50 crystalline caves in sector (x) for this open ended community goal' get rewarded with a special crystal bobble head and credits.

Okay, I admit, at first when watching this video I was somewhat disappointed it was not a parody of some sort. However, my opinion quickly changed as it perked my interest.
The views before, during, and after the collision were freaking spectacular! I for one, believe you have made your case, and hopefully FD will listen and leave this ‘accidental bug’ alone, allowing for other Cmdrs to witness this first hand, ( I mean come on FD - couldn’t your time be better spent working on other areas of the game?).
This is a great video, and you did a good job with the explanation, (education), of the phenomenon.

Man, I hope we don't have to see you go deeper into Uranus (some things should always stay private) Yet another fantastic vid, I enjoy these more serious vids just as much as your normal lunacy embracing content. Really interesting though, as I love hearing about astronomy and the stellar forge. I find it such a shame that Frontier remove any interesting little glitches like this. I've only played Elite for a year and I know there's loads of cool little oddities that have been removed, so us newish players miss out. Great vid and a truly epic Nineties montage. o7 Commander!!!

Thanks man for the great comment here. Yeah there are still loads of weird stuff out there. In fact there are lots of impossible star generations that seem legit but actually aren't. For example it's not too hard to find binary pulsars in the game but in the actual galaxy they are super super super rare.
It's a big galaxy and basically takes some time for players to run across these crazier stuff. Have fun out there!

What really impresses me from a technical standpoint is the fact that you can actually interact with both planets as they collide. My expectations were that at such a huge scale the planets and surfaces would be instanced, so if a planet collided you would only have collision detection and LoD with the planet you "landed" on, and the other would be a low poly LoD and you could pass through it.
Instead the planet is _actually_ there at a functional level, full res textures and collision detection.

Actually, the time where you flown between the 2 moons is extremely reminiscent of star citizen's coil asteroids, which is a huge asteroid that was splintered in 2. Normally, they should have reunited, but the rock is within a dense gas cloud. As such, the gaz's friction to the rock ended up charging them in the same way clouds charge themselves in electricity. This caused the two halves to remain separate, all the while massive electrical surges crack within the asteroids. Flying though the coil is quite the challenge in fact, the asteroids are very closely pulled together, and there is the danger of the lighting hitting your ship and disrupting system's. As of now a WIP version of the coil can be seen in the SQ42 demo.
As for the video, I completely agree. Things such as this may be unintentional, they re yet one of the most interesting part of exploration. And this is kind of sad when you think about it, almost every aspect of the game is more fun when its broken or not working the way the devs intended. Combat is more rewarding when the reward are glitched, trade is only interesting when setting about trying to find loopholes in the game for insane profits, and exploration is only rewarding when finding super unusual places, which most of the time are purely the result of bugs. Maybe FDev could learn from this, learn that fun is achieved through novelty, through meaningful change and interaction, not from grind.

Ghost Giraffe RN the thing is not in universe, as RN the game is limited to crusader and its moons. However there is some of those "oddities" you can find in the verse. May it be crashed capital ships, or a stonedge made out of noodle vending machines, there is a lot of those hand placed stuff even in the alpha. And with procedural assisted content, that is going to become more and more common

Ghost Giraffe as for the thing I am referring to, it is aviable on this video, at the 29:30 mark of the single player vertical slice. This is the version without the live commentary, I recommend to watch the one with commentary because there is a lot of info and interesting tidbits. Something very interesting especially considering what is shows is a secondary mission. ua-cam.com/video/BHR1aEdTA4M/v-deo.html

Excellent video - I learned something but not sure quite what yet. Interesting that ED Stellar Forge is creating glitchy things that occur for real, and also very cool that you guys are discovering them and educating people in such a fun way :3 Outstanding as the guy below me said.

That was the third recorded collision last February. The next collision should be on July 11, 2018 at ~5:10 am.(in game time) Give or take a couple of hours.
I have a video on my channel from the second collision in October of 2017.

THIS. This is what makes me want to go out into the black and explore more in-game. I hope the FDev don't simply patch this kind of thing out. Obviously, the code is wrong - the two moons should've either collided or simply switched places - and they could/should fix that because it would be cool to watch two celestial bodies collide - but I hope they don't just move the moons or make it so they bounce off one another or something.

    That is one Epic orbit.
i wish E:D could just leave those in.. but then the stellar forge is probably harder to update.
I havnt seen any stellar thing yet..
other then a tiny Water Giant with Giant rings holding a (no atmo) Ammonia world with 3 landable icecubes in orbit. and with the right timing it allows for some epic pictures. but thats just an epic pile of celestial bodies orbiting eachother not really like this.
its the first place i plan to visit before arriving in the bubble again because of the reworked surfaces.
But first.. im waiting for the MFG Crosswind pedals :)

I think it would be cool to see Rouge Blackholes sweeping across space and Neutron stars eating systems as they pass through them.

    • @GhostGiraffe
      @GhostGiraffe  6 років тому +1

This would be cool and who is to say this isn't happening but just at a slow cosmic pace? No no I get what you mean and yes that would be awesome.

    • @Heavensrun
      @Heavensrun 6 років тому

Although this would be a neat thing to see, the odds of it happening are pretty low. Even in the tightly packed galactic core, the empty space between stars is so enormous that the odds of any star system directly interacting at close range with another is vanishingly small, and even if you found one, it would most likely just look like an ordinary binary for most of the time that the "collision" is happening. The black hole or Neutron star would also be more likely to kick -out- any planets or stars in a system it interacts with. Actually falling -into- a random gravity well is harder than you'd think.

Can you do one of these videos but on one of the (many?) super-fast orbiting planets in-game? I've heard of/seen a few that have basically impossible orbiting speeds.
Great video by the way! I really did enjoy the way you blended the game with real-life facts and data. I find Elite: Dangerous to be an extraordinarily fascinating game in terms of its sheer depth and 'realism' to size and detail, so to see it represented in a 'Documentary' style video is very satisfying to watch. Keep it up! :)
