  • Finally here! A 3.0 ship scale video. It contains all the flyable ships from 3.0, the fighters, the three main Thargoid variants, the SRV and a few real world examples to help show the scale. Enjoy!
    The cool Thargoid logo was from ArithonUK. Thanks hugely for that! www.elite-dange...

  • @IamCombustible
    @IamCombustible 5 років тому

    This really hammers home Elite's scale problem. The cockpits of the biggest ships are proportionally identical to the cockpits of the smallest ships. If there was no direct comparison and I didn't know any better, I would assume that most of these ships were of comparable size.

    • @preferredimage
      @preferredimage  5 років тому

      From the outside for sure. we're so used to seeing windows on an aircraft meaning there's very little room behind the glass for people and cockpit. Inside the ship, less so. You can look around some of the cockpits and see how far away the door is, the upper or lower decks etc. and in VR this is increased vastly. If you only ever look forwards from the pilots seat, you are only getting one perspective. A good test is go outside and look at yourself in the chair, compared to how much glass there is.

    I wish the scale of the vessels was more apparent in the game. The asps, FDL, et al., feel like small lorry trucks at best, even on external camera - it stunned me to see an asp juxtaposed with a passenger jet in this clip.
    To be fair, the scale of the ships is marginally more apparent when you're planetside in an SRV next to one, so it seems likely space legs would increase the sense of perspective.

    This was very enjoyable and me being new to the universe of Elite Dangerous, this actually helped with the shear scale of the game for me lol

    Be sure to add the Challenger, Krait, and Panther in your next size comparison when they are released.

    It's the cockpit/bridge Glass that throws you off.
    Example; The Courier and the Diamondbacks, just looking at them blind with no reference and you'd think "oh, single man crew, maybe some room for a bed and bathroom, miniature-size." No, it can fit elephant in there and have so breathing room. The only ship I'd say is "small" is the Imperial GU fighter. Amazing how much is in that tiny frame

    Damn. This really put into perspective how big of a jump I went going from a Sidewinder (which is way bigger than I thought it was) to the T6.

    YES!!! Brilliant, I love human for scale for every ship, it shows how stupidly oversized are cockpits of this ships and that they cant really be used to judge the ship sizes, adding a sidewinder to the last ships was good idea to. Only suggestion I have - for the next movie try to find a cruise ship model and place it next to Beluga :) Thumb up for you commander.

    Not sure if that Tesco banana meets EU regulations. If it's too bendy the whole video may be considered inappropriate. ;)

    I think this video shows one of the key strengths of Star Citizen over Elite Dangerous (i own and enjoy both) and that is the sense of scale in the game. Because you cannot walk around the ship etc it is almost impossible to get a sense of the true size of your ship

  • @VeggyZ
    @VeggyZ 6 років тому

    Ahh I didn't actually realize that the Beluga was the largest flyable ship, but I think that explains quite a bit, like getting snagged on the freaking station openings everywhere I go, and hitting every ship that comes within a football field of me.
    I guess that's to be expected of a cruise ship.

    in an age of home 3d printers, it would be awesome if the models were offered to the public. It would be awesome to stick one on a books shelf, etc

    You should compare the Federal Corvette model to a model of a US Navy Super-carrier. Would be nice to see that.

    Next time you do one of these, it'd be great to see a zoom in to a sidewinder with a pilot next to it in the mail slot.

    I never realized the ships were these big in-game when you put the little pilot next to each ship.. They always felt tiny. Like.. 1:50 in and I'm like "wow Adder is huge.. yet they're like little cockroach shits when you blow them up in space.."
    Also the little snek at the start is so cute omg.

    Meanwhile I thought my glorious Imperial Clipper was about the size of a passenger jet. It's actually the size of a small space station. The amount of times I got stuck in the mail slot now all make sense.

    I feel that the main problem with the design of Elite: Dangerous ships is the cockpit size. A lot of them have massive screens which work with the rest of the ship's scale but makes the ship look much smaller than it is. Other than that, Elite has the best ship designs ever!
