In this video Trevor is telling us the difference between gas and electric patio heaters. With fall right around the corner it's a MUST to have some patio heaters to extend our outdoor time before winter. There are a lot of misconceptions about electric vs gas heat and Trevor puts the heat from both units to the test!
Gas heat is a very popular choice for patio heaters. Gas heat has some pro's like it can be cheaper to install depending where you are. Here in Colorado getting a natural gas patio heater installed will be cheaper to install. This does not apply for everywhere, but specifically Colorado. Another plus is that gas patio heaters can be mobile. In the video you see our Dimplex and Bromic units that can be easily wheeled around. The only problem with portable heaters is the price of propane which cant get very expensive!
Electric heat is our preferred patio heaters. Electric patio heaters can be installed both inside and outside unlike gas heaters. Being able to have electric heat in an enclosed environment is a huge game changer. While electric will probably cost more to install you will save money in the long run as compared to portable gas heat. Another benefit with electric heat is that it heats objects. Gas seems to not heat as well if there is a gust of wind that takes the heat away. One con of electric heat is that there is no portable heater yet! We have the eclipse electrical heater and while its portable it's very large and kind of hard to move.
Let us know what kind of heat you prefer? do you like gas or electric patio heaters and why? As always, we appreciate you taking the time to watch our video. Be sure to like, comment, and subscribe! More video incoming.

Great video. Thanks for the comparison. You kept mentioning CO2 emissions by the gas heaters, but the greater danger is CO, carbon monoxide, rather than CO2, carbon dioxide. Both can deprive you of oxygen, but CO is deadly poisonous long before the oxygen in the air is depleted. It actually prevents your blood from binding with any oxygen that may be present. Most people become drowsy and fall asleep before they even know there's a problem. Also, (because I am a scientist - lol) the reason the electrics do a better job is that they are producing infrared or radiant heat which can travel directly to you whereas the gas heaters are heating up air through combustion. Most of that energy is lost in an unenclosed space, so you are correct when you say that the electric is more efficient in transmitting heat to humans. In a thermodynamic sense, the gas is probably more efficient since the electric was probably produced by burning coal or oil at a generation plant! Thanks again for your videos.

This is a great video and very educational..... I have experience with both units (gas and electric) and we try to always use electric, however.... if our clients only have 200 amps feeding their home, adding several 30 amp electric heaters may exceed the electric service that is servicing their home... this is where the gas comes into being more practical for the user... Most certainly the electric will be the best for a pavilion or outdoor space, but if the client is looking at a $10K to $20K service change to feed their electric heaters, the gas is your better option.... I will be keeping your video handy for future reference.... This question comes up with every back yard project we build.

This is the most important point in the entire comparison. If you don't have enough power coming in to your house or enough going out to your patio, upgrading that could be a huge expense. In my case, I have a 100 amp panel in my patio but my hot tub already uses 60 amps on just that one circuit. If I have a single electric heater with 2 elements, I'm already over the 100 amps and one will trip if I'm trying to use them both. And that's before you account for any outlets, lights, fridge, etc. In order to upgrade my patio panel to 200 amps, I'd have to dig up and re-pave my parking lot to bring a new conduit through.
BTW, counting the number of unused breaker slots in your panel is not at all a good way of determining your spare capacity. You need to add up the draw of all the circuits and compare that sum to the capacity of the breaker coming in to the panel. By your method, my panel has "plenty of unused slots" even though I don't have anywhere near sufficient capacity to run the 2 double heaters you described.

Didn't discuss the cost of upgrading your main breaker box to accommodate the extra load of electric heaters.

They make radiant gas heaters. They also make sensible electric heaters. You are comparing sensible to radiant heat, not gas vs electric.
