🐟 Flies that worked today: Size 16 Elk Hair Caddis (Green), Size 8 Golden Caterpillar
Session Notes: I parked at the Cleveland Dam Capilano River Hatchery (for free!) and walked down to check out the Cable Pool then continued on to Dog Leg Pool on the Capilano River. I did some trout fly fishing and caught with elk hair caddis and a homemade fly, and got many bites on other flies. Fishing an urban canyon in North Vancouver was a fun experience and I look forward to exploring more of the canyon, as well as fishing the Cable Pool for salmon in the future. @@RosinFlyFishing I often drag mine by it's leash. While it is a literal drag to bring it, the comfort in the water and the water it opens up to you is invaluable.

Haha Jim, I tried.... it was a miserable failure and it's not at the top of my priority list :P. Hoping for beach fishing next, maybe a coho? On a 5 weight? Need stronger tippet...
One of the best tips I got from a VERY seasoned veteran fly fisher when i was starting out was to carry my rod pointing back and horizontal to up a little when walking/hiking, anywhere really, but especially when bushwacking. Both much easier to navigate tricky /dense bushes and much safer for your rod!
Great tip! I actually do that most of the time, though sometimes in heavy brush I find it easier to javelin my rod forward as I can see the path :). But as a standard in practice I don't do that! Thanks for your comment!

@@RosinFlyFishing yup I have but haven't caught a fish there. I saw lots of people down there fishing this morning as I was crossing the bridge. Think the rain has let the fish move up since they were all staged at the mouth. Good luck!
@@devbru oooh I hadn't even thought of that... I was chatting with another North Van guy who was one of the guys out there this morning actually and he says there were plenty of fish and fly fishers were having the most luck! Not that I know what the hell I'm doing in the ocean lol

I don't fly fish ( would like to one day ) but I'm always up for exploring new spots so if you're ever interested in heading out let me know! Have yet to get a cutthroat around Vancouver so I'd be keen to check out some spots.
Those baby rainbow become the resident steelhead when they head out and return from the ocean. I've never caught a cutthroat that far up the Cap. Down at the mouth for the sea run cutties. Wait for fall and coho may surprise you on the 5wt. It has for me!
Hey HLam! I figured they were baby future steelhead. If you say they are at the mouth of the Cap, then I'm there! Haha. Next session I think I'll check out Ambleside and have a go at a Coho or Cutty on the 5 wt. If I hook one, it'll be a wild ride!!!

Try using a small salmon egg fly imitation
Thanks for the suggestion! I have a size 14-16 orange-red egg I will try next time! Should work on trout, think it could work on salmon? They may bend the hook tbh 😋

When the salmon are spawning, the trout will be munching on their eggs. Great time to use egg imitations. Especially if you can get downstream of the salmon. Great video. Nice to have an oasis to fish all yourself so close to the city!

Closest spot near Calgary that’s as pretty as there is the Livingstone river where I caught my first trout on a fly ever
It is very pretty in that river I'll admit. But the fish are small most of the time. But in the fall there are salmon running and in Winter there is a small steelhead run, so watch out for that! (If I learn how to fish... 😂)

For sure, normal non-steelhead rainbows are already super energetic so these guys can only be more amped thinking about their future ocean journey! :)

No retention of these steelhead smolts, resident rainbow trout, or steelhead on this system ever. Make sure you check the regulations before fishing new water :)
9:16 you are looking at House Rock.
Before that, on the video, the deep pool is Dog Leg.

I know you are aware at this point, but to me? Those canyons smell of death. People fishing up on the higher canyon rocks, almost yearly end up drowning. Lower down at water level? That's just eerie. No scarier water than the Capilano. Nobody would expect a river to shoot up, but this one certainly can. Every year people get stranded on rocks. I have one policy on that river. How quickly can I get up to the banks and I NEVER EVER cross any part of it. But I know the river. Many don't. There are many videos showing a great fishing spot. Which is the spot where yearly fisherman are surrounded by rushing water with no escape. No fish is worth it. Funny not to see the big signs warning of the river level volitivity.
You are right about everything you've said. I look back at some of my early adventures here before I got a PFD (which I wear every time now) and think how stupid some of my choices were. Like you, every time I go I'm calculating how close I am to be able to get up at least 1-2 meters in elevation in a few seconds... Anything else and your life is at risk. I probably will make a video about these risks and considerations and the deaths that have happened and all that later at some point. Because the people who know, know. And many others have no idea what the dangers are. I've fished just down from Cable in August beside a young family with 2 kids and if the dam was accidentally released it would have been on the fence if we all survived based on where we were... It's a terribly scary place, yet the most accessible salmon fishing for many people including me.... I actually wish they would consider removing or altering the dam. A massive project but something that I think would be amazing in many ways. A conversation for another time. @@RosinFlyFishing I know they have (or still are) actually putting in an alarm system based on the tragedy that occurred there recently with the father and son who lost their live because of that accidental release of water. The area under HWY 1 is notorious for stranding people because it would be near impossible to realize when the water comes up, you're actually cut off from land. You're actually standing on an island. I don't blame anyone new to the river. You won't find a river like the Cap anywhere. It defies logic in many ways. Unfortunately the authorities have never adequately done anything about it, like educating the public with signage before entering the trails to the river. On a different note, great production and quality videos you are producing!

Yeah they are not popular at all I think the occasional fish might make its way up as I've heard some anecdotal reports if people catching them!
12:00 you must have been on the river during minimum flow. Crossing where you did is very foolish. Any more flow and you are finished. Wading is NOT recommended on the Capilano River. Ever! Trust me.
The water level can change very rapidly and your way out could be swamped.
I've seen it now and I get it. You are right, it is life-ending dangerous.
You are accessing those spots by the wrong way. There are safer ways. Get to know some locals that can show you the way around.
Hey Steven! I have since learned MUCH about the river... access points for the different areas, where is 'safe' (nothing is safe during dam release) - I even was at Cap during the Sept. 30th dam release when the river was raging and 100% dangerous and I agree I would have been blown away at any of the spots in this video. I get it know.

I haven't been to the Cap for several years due to a stroke. Too difficult, and dangerous, for me to get to the different spots.
I have caught dozens and dozens of Cohos over the years. One or two nearly every time I went. If you need advice just ask Dave Steele at Highwater Tackle in North Vancouver. He will know who I am.
