I need to create a video for an important school assignment. I'm in my senior year and I need to showcase complex and movie editing features. What is the best software for me to use? I can purchase software with a 30-day trial as I won't be needing it for longer but I need to know the best software where I can showcase different complex features of video editing in my video. Which software should I go with?

I remember when I first got a Mac, I felt iMovie was too difficult and preferred to use the iPad version, when I learnt it, I felt the iPad version was limited, and when I got FCP, I struggled at the beginning and usually went to iMovie, but when I learnt it, I felt iMovie was limited, and now I realize the iPad and iPhone app is too basic 😅

Nice concise video. I’ve been using iMovie for years, and about hit the limit. Been playing with free trail of FCPX. Steep learning curve. For my needs I find iMovie works best for me as I only have a small UA-cam channel. But I like the tools of final cut.

Hey Pete, yes iMovie is great. I use FCPX mainly and when I went back in to film a new turorial series this week, I realised just how good it is, so many featues!
The new playlist for iMovie started yesterday, I'm sure you'll know everything I'll teach in it, but might be the odd trick as we go along; ua-cam.com/play/PLUfBgTurvFKpyn2KUFlidQ9QDRlvApUvl.html

There is the option / workaround to create titles etc. in keynote and either export those as movies / png / tiff for import to iMovie to enhance your titles options. Keynote will even export movies in 4K.

Great video. I've been using imovie for my channel for over a year. After watching your pros and cons I'm convinced to stay with imovie for the time being. I've discovered several work arounds that you mention as limitation, (adding multiple screen effects to one clip) e.g. blue screen and picture in picture. Also found you can make multiple changes in an audio track. Hover over the audio line and press the option key it will but a marker add several and the audio can be moved between the markers. Great content thank you, subscribed.

I used Final Cut Pro X for a year, then had to go back to iMovie because I no longer had access to the account that had the license for it. I did find that it was relatively easy to step back, though you find yourself looking for ways to compensate the video tracks etc. As I am doing more explainer videos and cycling videos, I am now considering taking the plunge and buying it myself. I think the improved workflow is probably worth the money just in time savings.

In the older version of iMovie, you used to control the aspect ratio and transition of the text. In iMovie 10, you can’t. iMovie 10 is okay but not as good as its previous version. I currently have a new MacBook with extremely limited space. As much as I want to get Final Cut, my Mac’s space is almost really low because of moving my iMovie projects from my old Mac and installing Adobe After Effects. I wish we could be able to change the SSD for the new MacBooks. Sadly we can’t...

    • @RogueRail
      @RogueRail 2 роки тому

@Nich do-in stuff Thank you for the advice. In fact, I've already moved my iMovie Library into an external drive. Now that you mentioned it, I told dad about my limited space, and he told me I should try external SSDs. You know what apple should do for future Macs? They should put some kind of slot for the internal SSD on the motherboard, that way we have a way to change our SSDs

Thank you for the video, I do use iMovie and I absolutely love it for its simplicity. I’ve been a music producer for almost 20 years and one thing I learned is that simple is always better. Whether it’s simple with editing, or music, or video, simplicity is key. When things are simple, the artist can focus on being artistic and creative - it allows the mind to flow. When things get technical it just wears down the brain and can be seen in that persons work... I do have to admit that iMovie limits you to many things like for example something as simple as the last fade-out, I want to be able to control the length of it to adjust to the feel of the music but I simply cannot do that, however, with everything in life there is a give and take. Have you used adobe premier by chance? How would you compare that to Final Cut Pro?

Great video!! I have not yet graduate to using FCP but I have been able to get around some of the iMovie limitations that you mention albeit for non-professional video by using some work arounds. For example: 1) additional title transitions can easily be created in Keynote using a transparent background and animations and imported into your iMovie project. 2) I can export a movie from iMovie bring it into Photos and crop into a different size e.g., square and c) for layering I just export my 2-layer video in pro res format and reimport back into iMovie and add another layer. I recognize size that these are just simple workarounds and I'm sure there are others but it is a 'poor mans' way of doing AMATEUR videos without the expense of FCP. IMHO

  • @lawofaverages5373

However, I HATE Windoze with a passion and really wanted to use my Macbook Pro (2012). Unfortunately, it won't run Resolve very well due to the MB's built in video RAM. I discovered iMovie is all I need to get started and it imports and reads my HEIC photos; something Resolve refuses to do on Win10. iMovie and FC Pro operate very efficiently within the Apple ecosystem. Good presentation I prefer still travel/street photography shooting RAW and enhancing in Lightroom. I occasionally run into a video clip scene and shoot that with Sony A7.
As part of my stay at home project I find importing enhanced stills works really well with the small clips as needed to tell my story with the iMove program, sharing that on sites like FB, Flickr and UA-cam.
No burning desire to use Final Cut Pro but can see how useful it is for the video pro advanced community. Thanks for the easy to understand information well presented.
Enjoy the Holiday Season and greetings from Northern California Richard

This may sound trivial, but one thing that I didn't realize I appreciated about iMovie, and I can't seem to make happen in Final Cut Pro, is that when you scrunch down your video timeline to the smallest length in order to see your whole edit visually from beginning to end, on iMovie, this diminishing of the timeline results in each of the cuts you've made turning into separate thumbnails of equal size, which makes it easy to account for each clip no matter their length. However, in Final Cut Pro, when you reduce the length of the timeline, the cuts stay within proportion of each other. This means that if you have a project of, say, twenty minutes, any smaller cuts all but disappear when you scale the timeline down towards the minimal side of the spectrum. This may not matter to most people, but for me since I like to batch certain effects (color, volume, dissolves) and I like to see that they are applied to each cut, the Final Cut Pro's diminishing of the cuts to where I can't see them makes it hard to handle these batching maneuvers. Maybe it's possible to turn the Final Cut Pro's timeline into thumbnails like iMovie does when you shrink it down, but I haven't found a way to do it yet. And I concede that professional editors likely have a more efficient workflow then I do. But I'd love to be able to do this. I even called Apple, and the Final Cut Pro specialist they put me on with said that he didn't think it was possible in Final Cut Pro. If anyone knows how, would you please reply to this post and let me know? Thank you. - Fred

Good video! I've been using imovie for quite a while now but I'm thinking about buying final cut pro, especially because nowadays the program is much more affordable. In my opinion the first versions of imovie had much more options; you could also make 4:3 ratio movies and they had much more film effects and extended audio editing capabilities. The downside was that in the older versions the editing was "non reversible" and the redering happened during the editing process, which made the process quite slow. For me the earlier versions felt also much more intuitive to use. and seems to me that with every new version of imovie, Apple tries to change all keyboard commands.

Just two video timelines, this is a big killer in iMovie. For UA-cam educational videos, I've used up to 6 video timelines to overlay information. Not to mention 2 or 3 audio timeline tracks. So, it was always Adobe Premier Elements until Adobe messed that up and slowed it down to a crawl. Then it was FCPX :) Brilliant.

I learned I can layer with iMovie...but I have to export first and if I want to add another video or affect I would keep exporting and bring it back into a new project. Hope I explained that clearly. I’m a very new UA-camr, had a gaming channel w/ no editing prior and recently switched it, I wanted to capitalize on that deal but this made me realize that I really do need to start with iMovie. iMovie seems limited until you start digging into it with the help of youtube tutorials. The program is self-explanatory only to some degree and has some very well hidden secrets, like YES audio keyframes (left click with option key pressed, use in detached audio for better visibility) AND video keyframes, and it has extensive color correction options.
Another example: After using iMovie for years to create private holiday videos I just recently found out that you can manipulate the boundaries of the green screen overlay and limit it to a section of the screen. Have not seen this documented anywhere.
And with the help of Keynote (free for Mac users) to create custom titles and effects using green screen, you can extend your possibilities way beyond what iMovie was ever intended for.
