I love that in Back to the Barn, Pearl doesn't even need or even care to be the ultimate winner because that's not what she's proving. She was fine settling at a tie because she doesn't need to win she just needs to prove that fundamentally they're equals. Peridot's the one fighting to win because it'll prove her socialized biases of where a pearl should stand compared to a peridot in the hierarchy I just love how back to the barn is handled
If anything, Peridot should be the one feeling like she's not an equal because she literally cannot do anything without technology. I would imagine she was actually intending to do damage when she first got popped and was slapping Steven. She doesn't even know how to throw a punch.
In real life, pearls are not considered as rocks or minerals. Pearls are organic gemstones along amber, jet, ivory and ammolite. They form within various species of freshwater and saltwater mollusks. Simply put, pearls are gems but not stones. However, the ancients made little distinction between pearls and actual stones.
I feel like that was Peridot trying to compliment Amethyst, and because amethyst was laughing a lot at Peridot making fun of the other gems, so she thought that they were simply having a good time and that saying that would also make amethyst laugh, however it obviously wasn't a good thing to say.
I think each of the three crystal gems learned something different from Rose Quartz. For Garnet, it’s “you can be yourself”. For Pearl, it’s “you can be someone different”. I wonder if you guys can figure out what being a crystal gem means for Amethyst, and what it might mean for Steven (or Peridot, if she’s becoming one).
I dont think Amythest had such a straightforward lesson to learn from Rose because she was never culturally conditioned by homeworld. She's an Earth native and was basically raised by Rose, which is why she falls so naturally into a sibling role with Steven. Steven however definitely teaches her a lesson, "You are good enough as you are."
i think they all really learned “you can be yourself” just in different ways. garnet learned you can be yourself even though others may look down upon you (may be reading into this but getting huge lgbt/trans positivity vibes? especially with the colour of the first fusion form) Pearl learned that she can be herself because she has a “self” and doesnt just live to serve and Amethyst (from what i know so far) has learned she doesnt have to be a big beefy killing machine/guard like shes ‘supposed to be’
i also want to add that rose taught that to herself (with context we learn later in the show: no spoilers) but even from what we know theres no way interspecies love would be allowed in homeworld we dont even know if gem love is allowed rn?
These episodes with Peridot explain a lot of things presented to us about the crystal gems and their behavior. When Jasper arrives, she calls Pearl "Lost and defective" and Amethyst "An overcooked runt". Pearl is defective because she acts outside the role she was made for, and Amethyst is overcooked because she stayed to long on the ground and emerged later, causing her to be small. Both Pearl and Amethyst's insecurities stem from their creation: Pearl feels "useless on her own" as she says to garnet because her purpose as a gem is to be somebody's companion, not to have autonomy. Amethyst says she "never asked to be this way" because she feels she was created wrong: wrong in the sense that her and the other kindergarden gems creation meant the decay of the earth, and wrong in the sense of being imperfect, not being the way she was supposed to be, act, or look like.
Jasper and Lapis fusing would definitely be frowned upon, the thing is that jasper was so desperate to defeat the crystal gems that she was willing to do something that goes against her beliefs. Also this goes to show the hypocrisy of homeworld's views, as they condemn fusion between different gems but create monstrosities like, Malachite, the Cluster and the gem mutants.
Peridot became the audience's wikipedia about the class structure & roles of gems on Homeworld in this Season. Garnet's first fusion backstory gave us a closer glimpse of that and their view of fusion. (Checks the next episodes) I cannot wait for next week!
There's something about the fact that Peridot saying "You outrank everyone on your team, they should be listening to you." and other things that basically translate to: "You are meant to be above them" made Amethyst so uncomfortable that I find interesting, and I think H-man picked up on it too. Amethyst changed to "wait this explains how I've felt all my life" when Peridot started talking about her size, but before that she was genuinely personally bothered by the idea that she was the one supposed to be in charge, because while it's an idea we've never seen her talk about, it somehow hits her most sensitive points, likely because it made her realize that the reason she ISN'T in charge is because she's incompetent even compared to her own kind.
- While “Back to Barn” is a homage to mecha anime genre in fact Pearl’s mech is like the one from the series Rideback which the protagonist is retired ballet dancer that uses the rideback robots to perform ballet-like moves just like her - Peridot's robot tossing Pearl around reminds me when the Hulk did to Loki in The Avengers - There are references to other Cartoon Network series like: - Peridot saying robot as "ro-butt" = Whatever Happened to Robot Jones? - Peridot robot's rocket-firing butt cheeks = Evil Con Carne and Grim & Evil - Robolympics = Robotboy - Fun fact the episode “The Answer” aired on Ruby’s voice actor Charlyne Yi’s birthday & she says this is one of her favorite episodes - When Ruby & Sapphire dance near a river to form Garnet is a references to Disney Sleeping Beauty Aurora & Philip "Once Upon a Dream" scene along with the colors Pink & Blue - Sapphire’s job in the past seems to be similar to oracles of Ancient Greece like the Oracle of Delphi
Ohhh Steven Universe is just gonna keep getting more intense! And what I love about Peridot is that none of her words were intentionally insulting, she's just saying it like it's a normal known fact. And even though the dynamic of the Crystal Gems was SO different than what she was used to, she was still willing to learn and change for the better.
This isnt a spoiler but Lapis is a high ranking gem in the gem society, she was actually seen when sapphire and rubies were introduced when they were walking to blue diamond. She outranks Jasper.
As a queer person, the "why am I so sure that I'd rather be this than everything I was supposed to be, and that I'd rather do this than anything I was supposed to do?" always hits very hard. It's the reason The Answer is my favorite episode of SU.
The reason why Garnets eyes look different is because she may be fused but some part of her is separate. So when their fusion is 100% stable they look more human and less like 2 people combined if that makes sense.
Though I can get why Amethyst would take it as an insult, but peridot was basically saying Amethyst was exactly as skilled and powerful as a gem soldier was sposed to be- *despite* her small size. It always hit as a compliment for me, and peri just didn't know how to word it in a way that didn't sound mean.
And that's one of the reasons why pearl was in love with rose, pearl was treated as a slave in homeworld but ever since meeting rose, rose was treating her equally than a slave, rose was the reason why pearl was becoming her own gem, to have her own voice and stand up against homeworld. And now there's also the opinion of homeworld on fusions of different gems, i like how the crewniverse used that as a metaphor for homophobia. Like peridot telling garnet to unfuse is like a homophobic telling a same sex couple to stop holding hands in public, well that's how i see it.

There was likely at least one other Crystal Gem besides Rose and Pearl, and possibly a few more, but yes, the number of Crystal Gems in open rebellion at the time Garnet first formed was very small. Rose Quartz definitely didn't have an army of any kind. Cotton Candy Garnet's appearance would seem to indicate that Sapphire was originally barefoot under all her petticoats, and only later altered her form to include foot coverings, presumably so that Garnet wouldn't be half shod and half barefoot.
Oh jeez, I never realized one of Garnet's feet was bare - I thought it was just a different-colored boot. And I'd assumed Sapphire had no feet, that her geode-y bottom surface was just kind of a flat surface.
Apparently they never made a height chart for the characters (or at least the animators where never given one) Everything is ripped straight from the storyboards, which is why there are some significant shape changes from time to time or just deformities. Since it was a third party the animation studio didn't really keep track of previous episodes either
you have to remember amethyst already had self esteem issues and felt less than the other gems because she wasnt around for the gem war and she constantly compares herself to pearl and garnet, so for peridot to confirm that there IS something wrong with and her worst fears are right, it’s gonna fuck with her alot
With fusion, idk if it was confirmed, but cross gem fusions are unpredictable and have a skill set more diverse than a same gem fusion, it throws off the power and class system set by homeworld. 3 rubies might match a quartz soldier in strength but both would be outclassed by a sardonyx or maybe even an opal
Gentlemen I’m proud to finally introduce to you the form we know as “Cotton Candy Garnet”!!! Also I saw you guys premiered your Hercules video today you’ll notice the voice actress for Meg is the same as Rose- Susan Egan
At the end of the song that Ruby and Sapphire sing when they’re humming, they’re humming the tune of the song that Garnet sings when she was fighting Jasper back at the finale of season 1!
Lapiz and Jasper are in different ranks. Lapiz is several levels over Jasper. Jasper is a solder and Lapiz is a gem so powerful that is used to terraform planets.
Although I think it's canon that Lapis is freakishly strong. Jasper knew what Lapislazuli do generally, but was surprised by just how powerful Lapis is
Just to point out that he entire show is an analogy of the conservative Christian world (Homeworld) and LGTB+ relationships (fusion with different gems) and discovering one's own identity. As the most conservative system encourages the creation of traditional families where the sole objective is to procreate and teach children from birth who they are and how their lives should be, Homeworld maintains a strict system where the only thing that matters is producing gems and programming them from the start for a single identity and function in life. The crystal gems are the ones that break with this system and experiment and practice relationships with other gems and other abilities, thus discovering a new, different identity in themselves and a new purpose in their existence. The story of Ruby and Sapphire is that of two people of the same s3x discovering their s3xual identity and being repudiated by their conservative world that sees this as something "unbelievable!", "disgusting!", "this is unheard of!". Peridot saying "Your fusion makes me incredibly uncomfortable" was a sign of the typical comment that homophobes say when they see an LGBT+ couple together.
Gems are kinda like robots to the diamonds They are built to be tools and function for a specific purpose And from their perspective the crystal gems are like defective product that went against their base programming and are just trying to snuff the problem away Its no different from throwing your automatic toothbrush because it refuses to clean your teeth Its kinda why i dont see this "classism" or "racism" perspective that other people have concluded Thats also why i dont blame peridot from being so annoyed at the crystal gems or being rhe way they are
The Answer is actually a sweet episode, not only because it tells you how Garnet became an almost permanent fusion, because that was a good hint of why she approved and support the fusion between Steven and Connie. That´s so wholesome!
the title card and ending cretits always make reference to the atual state of the scene (sunrise, day, sunset, night raining) and place like temple, barn and orbit (on the season 1 finale "jailbreak) the end of season 1 and start of 2 even had the pices of the hand ship scatered around until the episode that they cleaned
The Answer was the first episode of Stevenbomb 3 that concluded season two, and this was the point that I had caught up with the series and merged with the rest of the fanbase. We now know that there's at least one more Diamond besides Yellow, and that there seems to be a rigid class structure on Homeworld. Fans reacted to Cotton Candy Garnet, Blue Diamond, and the sight of another Pearl. Lots of speculation ensued. When the Rubies walked past the Gems of Blue Diamond's court, there was a glimpse of what appeared to be a Lapis Lazuli, perhaps ours (the gemstone placement is the same).
24:13 I have been trying to figure out where I heard that line from for years. So it was SU this whole time. I love that line asking about why she is so certain about this new form.
An amazing touch: after Rose says "no more questions," Garnet never asks a single question. In the entire series! From episode one, no questions! (Except a couple of rhetorical questions, that the creators disagree on.)
As an autistic person coming from a religious background I’ve always super related to Peridot. Especially being in the lgbt+ community, the idea of having to figure everything out with no actual guidance in a new enviornment and then rebelling from your origins is really powerfully relateable to me
Oo perks of waking up on the late side 0:24 ITS TIME FOR THE PEARL REVEAL AND THEN THE OTHERS REVEAL 0:55 _dang_ 13:00 it's like Well she tried her best - "She's not even fighting" When Garnet tried to talk to her through the bathroom door, she quipped back "As if I have anything to discuss with you, filthy war machine!" 14:35 Sometimes comments have like... "Amethyst was laughing at everyone else being talked out about smth smth dishing it out" 16:32 It was just a _drill_ aaa love this line sm 20:00 show meeee 24:40 all a bit closer in color like tinted
Now you came to know the existence of another Diamond. First, you learned about Yellow Diamond that is Peridot's superior. And now you learned about Blue Diamond, which was Ruby and Saphire's superior. And you're not wrong, Gem society is extremely hierarchic with one gem having on especific status and purpose and straying from that is a huge transgression. And yes, Pearls are some of the buttom low classes and they are treated like objects. And fusion is abominated in a general. The only way for it to be accepted is in a funcional way and with equal gems.
Blue Diamon is Sapphire's direct superior, but Ruby wouldn't be. Without saying whose she would be, Blue Diamond said "How dare you fuse with a member of my* court?" i.e. Ruby can't be one of hers
@@jasmine9581 Well, if Saphhire was Ruby's direct superior and Blue Diamond was hers, then that also makes the latter Ruby's. Besides, Ruby is not part of Blue Diamond's court because she is not an important gem. Remember that, in monarchies, the court is made of royalty, nobility and other important people. Sapphire is part of Blue Diamond's court because she is an aristocratic gem. Meanwhile, peasants and common soldiers (like Ruby) are not considered part of the court, with their role there being to serve as bodyguards.
The difference on Garnet's color scheme (from her original form, to the first form we saw and the current one) is meant to represent one especific type of garnet that reflects Garnet's state of mind and being at that moment. After all, geologically speaking, garnet is not just one gem in especific, but a class of gems.
"Did that kill someone?" That was my exact same question when I watched this. You lie down on a lawn chair to have a nice evening when a car suddenly comes flying and destroys you.
Jasper only fused because she had to to win. Fusing between two different gems is looked down upon, even if similar rank, and Jasper just hates fusion.
I do wonder if Peridot felt like it would be ok to call Amethyst defective since SHE is also defective by homeworld gem standards and thought that Amethyst knew and understood what it's like.
I can’t help but look at garnets visors to see who is speaking Its really cool to see when garnet gets angry the majority of her visor is red and when she is clam and and funny its blue
Also with Garnet, her fusion was also frowned upon bc on homeworld only the same type of gems fused. Like rubies fused with other rubies etc, but when ruby fused with a Safire it was like u heard of.
I feel garnet was both in the beginning of the show, but was sapphire’s aloofness, with ruby’s use of physical force for answers, now she has more of ruby’s emotion expression but sapphire’s calm, reasonableness, and both their love
15:52 "much like normal people" that's the funny thing about steven universe. despite most of the main characters being nonhuman, at it's core, it's a show about being human.
Can I just say that i love that as the series has progressed and the art style became more perfected, Pearl's head has become rounder and overall her body looks less lanky and stick like. Look at her in these episodes, then go back to episode 1 and you'll see what i mean
So for jasper, she only fused with lapis because she was commenting how garnet was only winning because she was a fusion so she kinda disregarded the rules In order to try and get the upper hand. Rank has nothing to do with it; they really are only supposed to fuse with their own kind specifically but jasper was desperate when her ship was wrecked

Gems are kinda like robots to the diamonds
They are built to be tools and function for a specific purpose
And from their perspective the crystal gems are like defective product that went against their base programming and are just trying to snuff the problem away
Its no different from throwing your automatic toothbrush because it refuses to clean your teeth
Its kinda why i dont see this "classism" or "racism" perspective that other people have concluded
Thats also why i dont blame peridot from being so annoyed at the crystal gems or being rhe way they are
The Answer is actually a sweet episode, not only because it tells you how Garnet became an almost permanent fusion, because that was a good hint of why she approved and support the fusion between Steven and Connie. That´s so wholesome!
the title card and ending cretits always make reference to the atual state of the scene (sunrise, day, sunset, night raining) and place like temple, barn and orbit (on the season 1 finale "jailbreak)
the end of season 1 and start of 2 even had the pices of the hand ship scatered around until the episode that they cleaned
Have y'all noticed that Pearl's space suit has a pink diamond on it?
Love how smart you guys are with putting dots together!
An amazing touch: after Rose says "no more questions," Garnet never asks a single question. In the entire series! From episode one, no questions! (Except a couple of rhetorical questions, that the creators disagree on.)
Pearl really starts to grow here and I love it. Also Ruby and Sapphire are the best couple
these r some of my fave episodes so far in y’all’s watch through!!! i love this series sm
These few episodes are some of my favorites, I'm glad you enjoyed them
As an autistic person coming from a religious background I’ve always super related to Peridot. Especially being in the lgbt+ community, the idea of having to figure everything out with no actual guidance in a new enviornment and then rebelling from your origins is really powerfully relateable to me
"Rose gave her a voice!"
🙊 🌸
Oo perks of waking up on the late side
0:24 ITS TIME FOR THE PEARL REVEAL
AND THEN THE OTHERS REVEAL
0:55 _dang_
13:00 it's like
Well she tried her best - "She's not even fighting"
When Garnet tried to talk to her through the bathroom door, she quipped back "As if I have anything to discuss with you, filthy war machine!"
14:35 Sometimes comments have like... "Amethyst was laughing at everyone else being talked out about smth smth dishing it out"
16:32 It was just a _drill_ aaa love this line sm
20:00 show meeee
24:40 all a bit closer in color
like tinted
Without saying whose she would be, Blue Diamond said "How dare you fuse with a member of my* court?"
The Robolympics was freaking funny. The giant robot fight was intense. Pearl has shown what she was made for
🤖🤖🤖🤣🤣🤣
where is 17/18 episode reaction! :(
It’s going down next week
five seasons, a movie and the future show await
I live for these reactions
Oh god you guys are coming up with amazing theories. I can’t wait till you see more.
So happy you guys are reacting to these episodes! The next ones are gonna be even better!
Ugh I’m so excited!! This is my favorite arc (barn arc) 😂
I love Peridot, as an autistic person I identify with her a lot, Peridot is the character that makes me laugh the most💚💚💚
I do wonder if Peridot felt like it would be ok to call Amethyst defective since SHE is also defective by homeworld gem standards and thought that Amethyst knew and understood what it's like.
I can’t help but look at garnets visors to see who is speaking
Its really cool to see when garnet gets angry the majority of her visor is red and when she is clam and and funny its blue
4:59 this picture with gregs aunts Always appears in the background when 2 characters are discussing in the barn.
First look into Gem Society and how things might be working within it.
the 1 frame message at the start was a nice touch. but yea there are still 4 more episodes of season 2.
Pearl is my favourity gem ,she is seen a lot of things .
Also with Garnet, her fusion was also frowned upon bc on homeworld only the same type of gems fused. Like rubies fused with other rubies etc, but when ruby fused with a Safire it was like u heard of.
21:15
They got it
(SPOILER ALERT)
14:19 They got it, those mfs got it right...
After hearing Peridot's logs, I estimated that the show takes place in the early 2000's.
Steven had a smartphone in the early episodes tho
I think the show doesn't strictly stick to our world's technological timeline
16:16
Dam🦫, this joke was lost in the translation 😂😂 this is golden 👌
(I'm Hispanic 😊)
AAAAA esperaba esto de hace tiempo 💗 amo sus reacciones, saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱🫶🏻
3 Eps? we eating good
I feel garnet was both in the beginning of the show, but was sapphire’s aloofness, with ruby’s use of physical force for answers, now she has more of ruby’s emotion expression but sapphire’s calm, reasonableness, and both their love
It’s Basically the Finally tbh, it changes drastically afterwards
Let’s get it!!
I LOVE THE BARN ARC ❤❤❤
I just realized is the underside of Sapphire's dress supposed to look like a geode?
15:52 "much like normal people" that's the funny thing about steven universe. despite most of the main characters being nonhuman, at it's core, it's a show about being human.
If you thought Season 2 was great, get ready to be steam-rolled going forward. The best is yet to come.
Is season 2 episode 17 & 18 omitted on purpose?
I can't find episode 17 or 18, was it skipped out taken out by YT?
Can I just say that i love that as the series has progressed and the art style became more perfected, Pearl's head has become rounder and overall her body looks less lanky and stick like. Look at her in these episodes, then go back to episode 1 and you'll see what i mean
amethyst is the cool aunt lol
So for jasper, she only fused with lapis because she was commenting how garnet was only winning because she was a fusion so she kinda disregarded the rules In order to try and get the upper hand. Rank has nothing to do with it; they really are only supposed to fuse with their own kind specifically but jasper was desperate when her ship was wrecked
anybody know what happened to episode 17+18? Been rewatching this series and can’t find those two
Been watching it too, and had been looking around for an answer.
From what I can tell, it was struck down. Which sucks cause I went through the playlist and had so much whiplash.
Sadly the only remaining source atm is Patreon & YT Members. Though it may show up again in the S2 Binge video.
Spoiler
I know they are far ahead… but god they have no idea just how little Rose actually “liberated” Pearl.
Just wondering something you guys going to see Steven Universe movie ? I was just wondering that because if you are you might want to watch the rest of this first I want to ask you you guys are doing a wonderful job in my opinion just keep being the amazing people that you guys are okay🙂🙂❤
Rewatching these and I just noticed they are missing ep 17 and 18
Man, I forgot just how awkward the first few episodes with Peridot on the team were
3 episodes? Iconic
